R171 Snowboard/Ski

Hi
Been learning to snowboard and my wife ski, is there any kind of rack that will fit an R171 AMG for ski`/snowboard, as I don`t think they will fit in the car anywhere.
Haven`t bought them yet by the way.

I'm not sure about a rack, but the last time I transported a couple of snowboards I had the roof down with the boards sticking out - and it was January!

Mercedes do a Ski/Snowboard rack for the R171. You need a slight mod (and new cover) for the A-Pillar.

sorry to revive this post, but the mod to the A pillar, is that permanent? I'm seeing the black molding at the base of the rack, running all the way back. Are there any photos of the car with the rack removed, showing the modified A pillar?

another solution I've came upon is this --

That adaptation can be done as a DIY, I think UKC200 has the technical data sheet for it. However it'll not be cheap and it does prevent you from using the roof at the same time.

There are adjustable boot/trunk racks for convertibles. Here's one example http://www.roofrackshop.co.uk/boot/m...-boot-rack.htm

Or there is are magnetic ski holders
http://www.fabbrisrl.com/eng/kolumbu...asp?pproduct=5
http://www.etonrack.com/_vti_001/home.html

Or you could use a rack with suction mounts on the boot/trunk. Sea sucker seems to be a major brand for those. They don't seem to do one for boards though, it'll be worth contacting them, I'm sure you'd not be the first to ask about it. http://www.seasucker.tv/

The SeaSucker options look very nice! Plus it's easy to move them from one car to another.

You could also just go with a "soft rack" which is just a strap with roof pads. I used these to carry an 8 foot longboard on my old SLK280

I'll have to dig out a pic of my 1st MGB (which had no roof whatsoever) with a sail board & rig strapped over it!! I used to travel round the country like that, and I can't remember ever getting (very!! ) wet.

Any update on ski racks for R171?

Greetings:

Bringing a thread back from the dead....

Does anyone have experience with carrying skis in an R171? Most of the links in this thread are dead, a couple still are alive:

Has anyone used the Etonrack system successfully? Any feedback?

How about the SeaSucker?

It sounded like there was a MB factory rack once upon a time, is that true? Anyone have one? Good experiences?

There is also one from an outfit called Bird that I found online:
Bird Automotive Ski Rack and Snowboard Rack
Anyone use this one?

Can you carry stuff on the roof of this car? Is there a weight limit?

Any comments welcome.....thanks in advance!

Best,

Jim in Boulder

Interesting difference in forum-culture. In my Saab 9-2x forum, you get chided if you don't search for answers before posting a question, and resurrecting dead threads is a point of pride. I can adapt!

We always say, 'search' is your friend. searching tips are in the new member intro section and in my welcome blurb.

Most 'newbies' resurrect the dead when they ask a question in a thread 5 years old and expect the original poster (who is long gone) to respond. We encourage resurrecting the dead when a new solution is found or an issue is resolved. Most new members have their 'view' in their options set to newest first by default. it should be set to oldest first which would be post number one, then they can hit the 'latest post' button which would take them to the 'latest' post but also give them the opportuntiy to read the thread from the beginning and then also 'noting' the 'date of the thread'

this is covered for newbies here:

https://www.slkworld.com/new-members-...d-how-fix.html

I'm not dead yet nor do I have plans for this stae of being in the near future, but nevertheless I will try to answer part of your question.
Yes, MB did make and I think it is still available a roof rack, see http://www.mercedes-benz.com.cn/cont...ccessories.pdf Scroll to page 30 and onwards.

I believe the weight limit was something like 40 or 50 kg.

After some additional research, I think that I'll keep my 9-2x for hauling skis into the mountains...... Love that car anyway, don't need much of a reason to hold onto it even after an SLK finds its way into my garage!
