whats your opinion on purchasing car parts through ebay?

i wanted to change my front bumper to amg while my car is in the shop. however, to purchase amg bumper from mercedes part store, it costs me over $3000 for a stupid bumper.

the guy told me to either look for them at a junk yard or online, cuz there is no diff between used and new.

there is one amg bumper on ebay thas about $500 with a little bit of damage.

should i buy this?

Check the sellers rating. If the seller has been on ebay for a Long time and has a really high rating, then your probably safe. See what he has for a return policy. Most of the time their really great about that kind of thing.

Seems like good value, but don't forget, you'll also need about $2800 dollars worth of 'stupid bits' (foam, armature, grills, fogs etc. etc. ) to fit it to a non-AMG car

If the AMG bumper is 'stupid', why do you want to fit it?

Well, there's a fundamental difference - "new" isn't damaged. That said, both the above posts make sense to me. As Woolly pointed out, there are a lot of other pieces you are going to need to make this work....

So, your easy way out is sell your Merc and buy a Japanese car - expensive MB parts go with the territory. . .

What is kind of interesting is the price difference between different versions of the bumper which are essentially the same piece, but I guess made in different quantities?

For instance the pre-facelift non-Sports Pack bumper is $700, whereas the Sport Pack is $1500. And I guess the 55 (AMG) bumper is $2500, although it's absolutely identical to the Sport Pack bumper except for the vents in the sides.

Seems like a very big price difference between very similar parts.

also, look at what it is made of and compare to what the stock AMG bumper is made of. Then there's the little issue of getting it to fit. The aftermarket bumpers usually state "some modifications may be necessary for fitment". Unless you're pretty good with body work, you might be in for a real shocker.
Like Woolly said... the "other" parts are going to kill ya.

I did this with my 944. I bought a 944 turbo bumper for it.. however, it was an original 944 turbo bumper with lights, bumper shocks, and foam. It was STILL a pita to put on.

Yeah, and it's always pissed me off that MB sees fit to make the AMG parts stupidly expensive compared to their non-AMG counterparts.

I understand the logic - you pay a premium for the AMG badge, it would be bad if the parts to make your non-AMG car were the same price as the non-AMG bits - but man, I still hate it every time I need a bit for the AMG.

.
Ain't that the truth - I stopped by a friends body shop the other day, and they were trying to hang a fiberglass "OEM Style" bumper on a 350Z. Fiberglass dust was everywhere from all the shaving and sanding.

With the OEM I replaced on the '350, I literally opened the coffin it came in to inspect it for damage, loaded it in the back of the F150, drove over to the paint shop and had it sprayed, then mounted the various bits and hung it - no issues at all.

A little OT...

It isn't just the AMG parts that are "over priced", I have to pay 2-3 times more for any part that is specific to the Designo package. For example, the stock leather steering wheel is around $400, I paid $1000+ for the OE two-tone orange/black designo steering wheel...airbag NOT included. And don't even get me started on the seat covers, rollbars and headrests I replaced. All had to be handstitched from the AMG dept. But don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining given there are only 26 U.S. spec Designo copper 230s in the world.
