Engine running...can't lock doors

I discovered something new. With the engine running (Keyless Go) I can't lock the doors from the outside by pushing the black button on the door handle.

On the SL i guess you mean with the mention to Keyless Go.

Easy answer really stops you locking the key in the car

I would have thought that it would be safter to be able to lock the car from the outside (using Keyless Go...i.e., key in my pocket) while the engine was running. Say you just want to run into convenience store and you want to keep the AC or heater on and you don't want someone to get into the car.

With Keyless Go it is impossible to lock the car from the outside when the key is inside whether the engine is running or NOT.

Doesn't the SL have REST like the SLK? That would at least take care of the heat...

In Australia it is illegal to even leave your car with engine running.

Yes, the SL has REST.

Another thing that is weird with Keyless Go....it is possible to start the car and then drive the car with the key left in the garage. But, when you stop you can't start again.

I simply disregarded the piece of information about the engine running since it is irrelevant to the issue you cannot lock a keyless go card/key inside the car (slight disclaimer - unless a receiver is bad or the card battery is low).

I am not quite sure how you read my post but it seems quite clear cut to me - Key in car door's WILL NOT lock (see disclaimer above).

You can start the car whenever it is in range of the card/key but to have the engine simply die when you go out of range would present a huge risk to both yourself and other road users so the car will simply lock out when it is shutdown much safer altogether.

Someone on one of the other MB forums said that once when he drove his wife to work in their Keyless Go MB she, by mistake, took his briefcase when she exited. After he stopped the car many kilometers later (and turned off the engine) he could not restart it.

I'm surprised insurance companies don't have a fit about that. My keys inside the house are are probably no more than 5 metres from the car, perhaps less, and if that means someone would be able to drive away in the car, and that it would never be locked, that would be disastrous. They could simply drive it straight into somewhere like an underground car park where the tracker would not work, and then disable the tracker and alarm. Or even straight into a container for export. Or they could just take it for a joyride, immune to the alarm or tracker, and trash it when they had finished. I can't honestly see why anyone would want such a pointlessly insecure system. I certainly won't be ordering it on any cars.

Yep like i said thats how the system works because say on a good day you have a 5-10M range as soon as you where to leave that if the car where to die you could be in traffic at that point or pulling out onto a road if the engine where to stop it could be nasty so the car waits until the engine stops then locks out at the point preventing the doors from locking or the engine from starting until the key is back in range.

I have it on the SL and personally i would prefer it to cut the power as soon as it goes out of range but i can see how that would be dangerous.

I can also see your point about the insurance companies i suppose the thing is once its stopped its not going to start again it cant be hotwired and to make it usable would require thousands of pounds of parts, proof of ownership and days at either a MB dealer or MB Indy so its not totally easy to do since the ECU's have to come from MB Germany and are tied to the other control units and the cars VIN a new one must be ordered you cant simply swap out another unit. So i guess if somebody where stupid enough to steal it they would have a car they cant use well apart form stripping it for parts as a little extra on mine i have on of the trackers that needs an external card so if somebody where to steal it then that would signal that its moving.

She was holding the Keyless Go at the beach while I was at home. Gotta watch 'em.

Same here in Germany. It's even frowned upon to sit in the car, other than while sitting in traffic, with the engine running.

It's cool living in another country and experiencing the cultures...even if some seem out in left field (This not being one of them.).

Tried it today with a relatives SL, nope it doesnt work.

I think they disabled this feature because in some countries there is a limit for cars and pollution, I dont recall which country that says if you are not using the car[parked] example going to the ATM machine etc, you can only keep it running for 3minutes or so.
