Need advise

Hello, I have never posted on this site, but have been registered for quite some time, and I need some advise and opinions, I currently own a E 350 and my wife is considering a 2006 SLK 280. Today I looked at a 06, 280 and here are a couple of problems with the vehicle, the current/original owner told me that he had coffee spill while in the cup holders, which I think sit above the CD player and the CD player has to be replaced as well as the cup holder, it appeared to be heavy/sticky dried substance, also the vehicle reeked with the smell of cigarettes and the computer said, 540 miles over B maint. The vehicle has 14,000 miles.
I guess my questions are, does anyone know the cost of the CD replacement, can the smoke smell be eliminated and what is B maint and its cost and any imput will be appriciated. I want to thank you in advance.

Hello and Welcome RL1,

I can't give you the info about the CD or cup holder replacement... but others will.

About the cigarette smell, I jut googled and several links have good tips. Here is one of them: http://www.ehow.com/how_113209_elimi...ette-odor.html

A B service is a big one but it isn't that expensive. Mine, in Belgium, was around the € 180...

I think I'd go for laundering curtains, pillows and slipcovers...

Sorry RL 1...couldn't resist ragging on P.A.

Welcome to the forum!! Those are good suggestions for getting rid of the odors...obviously adjusted for automotive applications.

I'm not sure I would throw in the towel on the CD player, but I'm an electronic technician and would welcome the challange of reparing it if it needed it. It may just need a good cleaning inside and out.

Can't help you with the "B" maintenance, but Dan or someone ought to be along soon to answer your concerns more accurately.

Enjoy your SLK when you get it whether it's this one or not. We'll still be here!!

I'd walk away from it. Sounds like a typical Jersey Cheese who just abused the car.

You are going to regret not going for the SLK350. Is price is a factor? I drove the SLK350 and had fun. Never even considered the SLK280 becuase I know what an E350 can do, and the E350 and SLK350 have the same engine.

The SLK350 has bigger brakes, a larger engine, and a few more options.

Ditto.

The head unit alone will set you back about a k and that service is way over-due.

Good things come to those who wait my friend.

Same here. The prior owner did not take care of his SLK.

But the owner was honest to tell you the dilemma. 13.500 miles = 21.000km, means he is driving quite normal. May be he started to sell the car with 13.400 miles and after some possible buyers, the car has now 14.000 miles on his wheels. This is no problem I believe. With 0² you will lose the cigarette smell. There are companies which do that for 150 Euro in Germany. Beat down the price and get it

i would def ignore this car. This person seems to have had a lack of care for the vehicle. If it was me, id opbviously have the vehicle serviced to aid selling it and also make sure the car was very clean and in good condition, not stinking of cigareetes and covered in coffee.
sounds unloved and those are the ones to stear clear off.

Honestly, i would use these things to get a killer deal, and give the car the love it deserves (if you are willing to accept the 280 engine). Get the entire audio system replaced with aftermarket. Also complain that the coffee may have damaged the HVAC controls, and get that replaced (and upgraded if it's not already the digital version), just in case.

Car was certainly abused, get it looked over carefully, and use everything to knock the price lower.

I think I'd lean towards cyber's advice with all intentions of walking away from the car if you can't get a great deal. I mean come on, how much abuse could the car have endured being only 540 miles past the B maintenance with 14k showing? Now, if it had 34k or 44k showing, that would be something to consider because the owner probably made a habit of going past the scheduled maintenance, but with this low of miles, you would have caught the car before any real damage had been done (IMHO).

That being said, and concurring with cyber...I'd use everything to my advantage to get a great deal. But, again, be prepared to walk if the owner is not willing to "pay" for his contribution to what he has admittedly done.

I know this is not what you want to hear...but I waited a year to find the car I bought. I could have bought other per colored cars with higher miles but I held out.
Let me tell ya...It IS worth it!

Don't settle! Set out a goal of what you want and search for it. You will be glad you did in the long run.

ORRRR.... Buy the one you are looking at and have all your problems answered here at SLKWorld!!!!

You won't find a better bunch of people willing to help you!
