Book about SLK history

Hi everyone,

some of you might already know that I happen to write books about Mercedes-Benz cars, so far 6 printed and some 20 e-books. My newest book will deal with all three SLK versions. The first part, dealing with the R170 will come out as e-book I hope this October. The other two most probably in November, early December. All three will then be combined into a printed book to be released in time for Xmas.

All my books are availble on Amazon, but this is not the reason why I write this stuff here. I just wanted to give you a bit of advanced info to see, what you think about it. The printed book will have around 370 pages and will cover the history of each model. Unfortunately I am not a technician, so it will not be a repair or DIY guide, but next to the history it will dive into a couple of technical issues (such as the vario roof) that I have found here to be of importance to you.

Ok, I don't want to bore you too much, here is the overview of what I plan to cover in the R170 part. This part will have around 130 pages, maybe a few more:

How it all began
The concept cars
History of the vario roof
The SLK vario roof
Trouble shooting the vario roof
The SLK 170
The engines
First upgrades
The 2000 facelift
- Engines and chassis
- Body and interior
The SLK32 AMG
The special editions
The sales performance
How did the little supercharged four-cylinder beast perform
The Brabus SLK6.5-32
Other tuners
What to look out for in a used R170
- The body
- The wheels, brakes, exhaust
- The roof
- The engine, suspension
- The transmission
- The interior
The SLK’s VIN explained
The SLK’s data card with model code description
Today’s second hand car prices
List of differences between the R170 model years
Unique SLK R170’s

Please let me know, what you think. Btw, there will be also plenty of photos covering the car in detail

All the best,

Bernd

I would want to see accurate Production Numbers by Year & Sales by Country.

That would be a bit of a problem, Carl, unless someone here in the forum has a better connection to DB than I have. I tried that with Daimler employees when I wrote the book, covering all modern SL from the R107 to R231. They just refused, apparently they did not have the time to do that.

Have you SEEN the R171 cupholders? If MB had wanted to deliberately produce a "feature" that was designed to raise revenues in repairs, this is the kind of thing I would have expected. Reminds me of an American car designed in the late 70's! Darn things drip directly above one of the most expensive items to replace!

The K40 relay is particularly problematic -- might be worth mentioning in "what to look for" section.

The Factory not wanting to help - is not an unusual problem. Most of the data has most likely been published in Automotive Industry Press during the period. The Auto Industry Press published Quarterly and Annual sales figures, market share percentages etc. Technical manuals and Service Bulletins from the Factory usually give VIN ranges. Some Manufacturers have Corporate Historian's or Archivests that if contacted are usually willing to help as well.

Takes a lot of research - but usually a pretty accurate picture can be developed. Someone on this forum found/published the AMG production by year/model.

FWIW,
Carl B.

I absolutely agree with you, I have contacted DB historians on this very subject, to no avail. But trying the automotive press' quarterly and annual sales figures for a certain car for each year and for the entire world (remember, you wanted sales figures for each model for each year for each individual country) is a task that a single person is unable to accomplish, I hope that you can agree with me on this one. And to be honest, it is not the purpose of my book to tell the esteemed reader that in 1999 two SLK230 have been exported to Kota Kinabalu. And I don't think that any book has ever done that. If you have such a book about Mercedes, Carl, please let me know. Because I would love to find out, how the author has done that. Please understand, I am not here to defend myself, I am here to learn from you guys, but it has to be for me as a small scale author somewhat reasonable to accomplish. As you had asked me to have annual figures in my book for each model for each individual country, this would mean that I have to contact the automotive press in each country, because such info you will not find with google. Daimler-Benz in Taiwan will for sure not tell me their SLK sales figures, because they have never heard of me.

Of course you are right about the AMG production data. But as you know, they are easy in comparison, as only around 4,000 have been built. They were published by a German Mercedes enthusiast site and then copied into this forum. I got them from the German site and they also don't tell you, how many were sold in countries other than the US, UK and Germany.
