Pictures of next gen SLK R173 in Auto Express this week

Hi,

Latest edition (March 31th) of Auto Express has a picture of the next gen SLK

For what it's worth...

By the way Auto Express is now free in the newsstand iPad.

I like the "sleeker" look of the nose as compared to the R172. Almost beginning to get back the wedge shape a bit. Overall, I think it is an improvement.

Lawdy, is it that time again already! I like the designs, except for the CLA-class look-alike grille. If you've ever seen that grille from up close you probably know that it looks better on pictures than it does in person.

I think it looks a lot nicer than the R172 - no proboscis monkey look - it could be plausible due to the fact that it looks more like an AMG SLS as the R171 looked like a McLaren SLR. I think however that the headlights might change dramatically due to the rapid changes in LED headlamp technology.

It looks great! I wouldn't mind having one in AMG colors Of course, I hope this isn't a joke since it is April Fools and all...

Is the red car the SL and the blue supposed to represent the SLK?

No, it's around about the time when people start coming out with their photoshop ideas of what the next model will look like. The funny things are:-

a) MB will probably by now know exactly what it will look like - and I'm sure that they 'bleed' 'hints' out, just to get initial reaction,

and

b) It was (possibly?? ) surprising how close the 'leaked'/phtoshopped pics of the R171 were to what was actually put in production about 4 years later.

Maybe an F instead..

By 2018 or 2019 - I'll be looking for a 2014 F-Type, if anything at all - LOL

I would say so as the blue car has fixed roll hoops like the slk and the red car has pop-ups.

the slk changes look to be quite subtle really - more facelift than next-gen. I like how the nose is part of the bonnet/hood pressing.

Will be interesting to come back to these pictures when official pictures are released down the line.

I'm liking the R173 photo or mock-up whatever it is, but with a 2014 R172 in my stable that is 100% paid for, well, I'll keep an eye out for a similar R174 post one day before I let myself get too excited.

You can joke now. Seems like the next SL might be a fabric top, but the SLK will keep the hardtop.

From my understanding of the Auto Week article the platform will be shared between the SL and SLK and will be so flexible that MB will be able to offer different options, soft and hard top (like the Chrysler 200 ), four wheels drive on the SLK, and even the possibility of 2 or 4 seats on the SL

Sounds like the multiple niches the Mini offered recently. I cannot imagine a SUV SL though....

a 4 seat sl with a fabric top - isn't that pretty much an e-class cabriolet?

I personally can't see them ditching the hard top - there's no real need for them to do it as the sl is not a sports car - it's a luxury gt.

A 4 wheel drive slk sounds interesting, but it's already carrying the weight of the roof - adding in the weight of a 4 wheel drive system is going to make it very hard to tag it as a sports car.

AutoExpress never has accurate information. All the pictures they "report" are just photoshop renders.

Whatever the red car in BCoolidge's initial post turns out to be, put in my pre-order. I think the diamond grill and lower profile look great but wonder how reliable this will actually be with the missing roll bars. Already started saving up for the R173 in anticipation it will be a winning design.

Not liking it. The second picture is "maybe-maybe" but IMHO it lost the aggressive and brutal look of R172. I know majority of you prefer 171 over 172 but I actually like the current SLK.

The nose will likely resemble the Mercedes-AMG GT which I think is a rather ugly looking car. Also the NA engine will be replaced with a twin turbo V6. The V8 will become history, since the V6 will provide more than adequate power.

I won't be buying any new Mercedes, since I'm quite happy with the one I have. Newer is seldom better, and less is usually better!

jbedit 6/1/2019 there is no r173 nor will there be one
