SLK oil filters and cross references ($)

GermanFilters.com is a nice site to find cross referenced oil filters (and others) or to simply purchase from. It has been found that some filters are simply plopped into another box (like Purolator) and sold. For example, if you visit Advanced Auto and pick up the "Purolater Premium Plus L25277" and take the filter out of the box, it's literally a Mann filter (down to the writing). A guy on the SRT-6 board found this. I've attached a picture

Click the link for your model and then click your filter. Scroll down and you will find dealer part numbers and cross references. To be cautious, if you visit Advanced or Autozone, I would look at the filter before buying it.

Yeah I'd just prefer to get a factory Mercedes filter, with a receipt from a Mercedes dealer. Nice proof.

However, I guess someone in a pinch, could go to a store and try this. I think I've seen some of the K&N oil filters are mann.

You'd rather spend more on a box because of a name? Heh. Now that is silly :P

Yeah see below. I'd rather pay less for Genuine Mercedes.

Furthermore, it takes less convincing to people you sell the car to and whatnot, when you have Mercedes receipt. So even if it was more money I'd pay it, but it happens to be less money.

Unless the dealer changes your oil and you keep the receipt from that, you are going to be frowned on regardless of your receipt if you DYI.

This argument can go either way, and not all dealers charge the same amount. Before finding this information, I paid $19 for my filter at MB of Melbourne when I could have gotten it for $11-12. Just because you are getting a deal from the dealer doesn't mean everybody else is.

@ lkchris - thanks for the site! I'm gonna add it to my list of sites.

Your site doesn't carry my filter, I checked. I'd have to call and frankly I have many other options before I go calling. Hehe.

This site is a Mercedes dealer and can get any OE filter for any Mercedes.

I know they can get them, but they don't advertise them. As I stated, I'd have to call and I have other venues I'd likely take before calling. I'm just stubborn like that.

It could look good for resale to a private buyer though, if they see all the Mercedes receipts.

Regardless, I have the main services done at dealer, but may do an occasional extra oil change and certainly after warranty.

Good point. I now change my own oil. Having it done anywhere (not just the dealer) was a huge rip off. I was getting charged $120+ for a independent and the dealer here wanted $140.

2 - 5 quart Mobile 1 jugs - $22 (Wal Mart, surplus of 1.5q)
1 - Mann Fleece Oil Filter - $15 (worst case scenario)

$62.54 with sales tax.

Of course the price will vary by site, this is the example from where I live. The oil change takes at max 30 minutes so that rates out to $120 / hour in labor if not more.

Anybody else have a comparison?

Yeah that pricing would be about for me too. You really save a lot. Certainly, after my warranty, no way I'm going to keep paying the dealer. Now I just have them do some basics, to get the stamp, while still doing some things, like dust filters, engine filters, brakes hopefully, etc. myself.

The dealers are amazing. Brake Fluid Flush I just had done on C Class. $90, guess what, $11 of that was for fluid.

However, I do have a decent advisor who works the pricing to save me some.

At home oil change is just a good deal, and it feels good to treat your car to the service yourself.

DO NOT do business with Germanfilters.com!
They charged my credit card $92 for oil & air filters for my SLK55 and I never heard from them again! The phone goes to a full mail box and they have not returned 8 emails over the last 40 days. They stole my money.

Is it possible you mistakenly ordered the 4 pack of o/f's? The cost + the a/f would be $91.92.

I see their site says they are under new management as of 10/9/2011 and "Please do not contact us regarding orders placed prior to 10/9/2011". Hmmm.

I can understand that they don't want to have the liability from the prior owners, who may have failed to deliver product, but it's not right to put the burden on the customers, either. Since the new owners bought the business, it seems to me that they bought the liabilities too. They should clean up problems for recent customers if they want to establish a good reputation.

Yes, I ordered the 4 pack of oil filters and the air filters for my SLK55 and the exact amount charged to my credit card was in fact $91.92.

This is very sad, and the "new" owners don't seem to care a bit about their company's reputation.

Good luck!
