We don’t need no stinkin’ badges …

From my local paper today:

WE DON’T NEED

NO STINKIN’

BADGES …

Oh, those Europeans. It seems they don’t like to flaunt their wealth, especially in Germany. Maybe that’s why cars lacking nameplates or even model designations are common. “They’re ordered from the factory that way,” Christian Bokich, a spokesman for Audi of America, tells the New York Times.

“If a director of a medium-sized company purchases a V-12, he doesn’t want to show it to his colleagues and have people judge him incorrectly.” Bokich says that while 25 percent of Audis are ordered with the “badge delete” option, the practice is more common with top models. Americans, on the other hand, seem to prefer flaunting wealth, even if it’s only pretendriches. Rob Moran, public relations manager for Mercedes-Benz USA, said it’s more common for us Yanks to add badges. And the results can be silly, like affixing an AMG label (signifying cars from Mercedes’ high-performance tuner division) to an older C-Class that was never offered in AMG form. “Technically,” Moran says, “that car doesn’t exist.”

SEL? Like the Mercedes badging? Really?

:-)

Today I saw someone who was too lazy for that. They had an ML320 with a white oval sitcker (like Euro country designation) that said "AMG".

Depends whether you buy a particular model of car because you want to enjoy driving it, or because you want to impress people.

Believe it or not, I have read that this trend started in Italy in the early 90s when there were a lot of kidnappings. The idea behind this was that if you had a top of the line car, by de-badging it you were less likely to attract the wrong kind of attention.

In my case, well I just like the anonymity and the look on following drivers' faces when they didn't realise my Passat has 170 bhp and a million feet/pounds of torque.

Childish, I know....

I know just what you mean.

About 40 years ago I had a TR2. Believe it or not, in those days it was one of the quickest cars around.

One day I was a the traffic lights alongside a Sunbeam Alpine. Now, TR drivers regarded even an MGB as a bit of a girlies' car, so an Alpine was beneath contempt. To make my point, I revved up and when the lights changed I shot off at top speed.

Unfortunately I had failed to notice that the "Alpine" had not been making "brum, brum" four-cylinder noises; it had been making, very quietly, "blubble blubble blubble" V-8 type noises. And when the lights changed, with hardly any apparent rise in revs, with one smooth "woosh" Sunbeam Tiger (for such it was) had vanished from sight leaving me all alone and feeling a complete plonker. I wouldn't have felt quite so foolish if it hadn't been for the fact that I had made it fairly obvious that I had been trying to out-accelerate him ...

Ever since then I have always admired cars which were rather more than they appeared at first glance.

I noticed de-badging in Stuttgart, but I got the feeling it was many lower model options. For example, an SLK I saw that was a 350, still had its badge, and it seemed like all the AMGs I saw of any Mercedes had the badges.

And let me tell you, Stuttgart is like a Mercedes mecca. A SLK is about as common as a bicycle.

Now, I could understand such businessman as mentioned in the article. I actually would prefer if only myself saw the cars I drive because my family/friends are not really car people and they just think any Mercedes is a big unnecessary expense. Sadly, de-badging my car, even if I had an AMG, would have no impact. To them, one Mercedes is the next Mercedes.

And for anyone thinking of de-badging...

...so long as the badges are the stuck on type, you need a hair dryer (to soften the adhesive), dental floss to work between the badge and the body in a kind of sawing motion and "cut" through the adhesive, and WD 40 or some other paint-friendly solvent to clean off the adhesive residue. Simple!

John

PS I wouldn't dream of de-badging my SLK.

I debadged my SLK 55 AMG almost as soon as i got it. Badging is a marketing gimmick to sell uprated models to poseurs.

MB 911, I agree, being originally from Stuttgart I know and remember and have seen lately when I went back to visit...

Alot of them remove their badges...and you are right SLK's in Stuttgart are like people they are every where...and every 2nd car is literally a benz there.

I found out by some friends and "strangers" the reasons...

One is : they do not like the badge, they want a clear even look,meaning...they get annoyed of one side has the slk badge and the other end is clear without a badge it makes it look uneven.

another reason is, they do not wanna reveal what engine it is and like the idea of surprising someone who assumes its a smaller engine. Which I get since in Germany you have the slk200, slk230 kompressor, slk320, slk32 amg - and since alot of them change their oem look on the car, without the badge,u'll never know what engine it actually is

I have seen even AMG drivers without the badge, for the clear look purely.

One badge on the front and one badge on the back, which are the 2 stars many like.

But you also have the ones people dislike, the ones pretending to have ahigher engine and they actually put a fake badge out there, that everyone knows its phony and they still do it...yes even in germany you have those fakers

I personally like my slk230 badge on the back - I however do not like on the pre faclift models the "kompressor badge" on the back...for some reason I never liked that on back. Looks neat on the side though

What about replacing the 280 badges (on a 280) with 300, now that MB are badging the latest 3 Litre with "300".

Is that an acceptable/valid rebadging?

Rather than pulling the wool over peoples eyes or pretending to be something it isn't, it's actually more accurate.

Hi All

Interesting thread this as it shows that different people like different things about their cars.

Personally I pay almost no attention to the badges, though they look a little silly when they're inauthentic. A friend of mine ordered a car specifically with a "lower" badge as he liked the stealth factor but "everybody knows that a car with no badge has a big engine" -- which struck me as doubly-perverse. Most of my friends though are of the kind where they recognise the make but that's about all and have no interest beyond that. Some of them haven't even noticed there are only two seats in my car. (Doubtless there will be calls to take their licenses away!)

Am I the only one who thinks the star on front of the R171 is too big? (And the current Volkswagens too, come to that.) I like the way the R170 looks as the logo seems in proportion to the rest of it.

Best badge though is the "Kompressor" badge: it makes my nephews stomp around like robots saying "Kom. Press . Or".

Regards to all
Jonathan.

Now if we can only get all dealers to offer that option with dealer ads, i.e. dealer name stickers, license plate holders etc.... The last time a dealer tried that I said "sure, if you pay me a $100 a month ad fee." You know how that story ended.

It works both ways.

Sometimes badges are omitted because owner doesn't want others to s/he got the small-engine model.
