Replacement Battery & Tires.. In Need Of URGENT Advice!!

Hello,

I am moving to from the East to the West Coast <therefore the URGENT at top> and am getting a complete turn-up on my Mercedes SLK. I got a quote from my Mercedes dealership that it would be $340 to replace the battery and $866 to replace the tires (Michelin).

Now, my friend (who knows much more about cars than I do) advises that do not have these 2 things done by the dealership and instead - go buy (Yokohama instead of Michelin) tires and battery elsewhere and have it installed at half the price.

Please tell me - is it a big NO-NO to have work done anywhere else other than a Mercedes dealership? Or does it not matter?

Any & all information is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Neither tires nor battery replacement is anything that technically difficult. Your car can get messed up for something as simple as removing a nail from a tire (at a Mercedes dealership)

I just got new tires as well (not from a dealership) and had my front bumper damaged as a result.

So from the technical standpoint, your car can get messed up anywhere for even the simplest thing. I wouldn't factor that in.

What Yokohama tires is your friend recommending? Is the Michelin quote for all 4 tires? What type?

I'm confused by your post:

Are you moving from East to West or vice-versa?

So I have a Mercedes SLK230.

I am moving from Washington DC area to California.

The tire quote ($866) is to replace all 4 tires with Michelin (sorry do not know which)

I am having a hard time deciding - as I want new battery/tires to have as long of life as possible. I don't want to get taken for a ride (as I'm tight on cash in the move) but also don't want to pay cheap prices elsewhere only to have problems down the road.

Here is the breakdown they claim needs to happen:

$180 battery
$30 hold down belt
$92 test
$34 service
____
$340 total

$174 per front tire
$179 per rear tire
$40 for mounts
$120 to balance tires
_____
$866 total

Tires seem cheap from the dealer, battery seems expensive, but I'm much more familiar with the R171's.

Either is trivial to change, and I'm not sure what the $92 "test" is from the dealer either..

The dealership knows you're moving to CA right? The type of tire you need in DC versus CA might be drastically different depending on where in CA you're moving to.

The Yokohama tires will probably be cheaper than the Michelin. If you know the type of Yokohama and Michelin being suggested you could price them at tirerack as a sanity check. The dealership may also be including a road hazard warranty of some kind which is elevating the cost of the tire significantly. Find out if the road hazard warranty would be honored at any MB service center. The price they are quoting you for balancing seems high.

I know you're only asking us for our opinion on whether to use the dealership or not, but if you can tell us more about the exact types of tires you're looking at we have many knowledgeable people here than can tell if you if the $$ you're paying is reasonable. If it is, then you can have the work performed at the dealership if that gives you greater piece of mind

With an older model vehicle that's out of warranty, I'd go elsewhere. You might feel more comfortable with dealer service. Normally, dealer service comes at a premium. Regardless, new in warranty, or older vehicle, battery and tire replacement are items that that can be completed almost anywhere. When I say anywhere, makes sure it's a reputable repair facility.

Here's a question that I don't think you've addressed - do you need a new battery and new tires or do you just want them because of the cross country trip (drive) I assume? For my next battery, I'm pretty certain that I'll be getting a Mercedes battery. I like the looks and the last one I had lasted me nine years. Mercedes Roadside Assistance can come and install one for you for the cost of the battery which can be at your home in DC, on the road somewhere or once you get to CA. The cost of the battery should be around $130 installed by Roadside. Others recommend an Interstate or an Optima, both of which will be fine. For tires, if you need them, I would buy them at a tire store or online from the Tire Rack. In either case I suggest you get them mounted and balanced at a shop that uses the Hunter Roadforce balancing machine. If you are an MBCA member, I know that there are some dealers in the DC area that give discounts.
