05-06 slk vs 06 Acura tl

Hi i'm new to this fourm and I am going to get my license in 2 months and I will be getting a 06 Acura tl with leather, nav and other perks. It has 70k miles on it but I have really started to like the 05-06 slks and I have been trying to convince my dad to allow me to sell his tl for the slk as the price of a used 05 slk is almost exactly the selling price of the tl. I have done my research and to me the slk seems like a very good car but my dad found plAces that said it was unreliable breaks to much, not safe, and so on most of the things he found were from consumer reports. For myself I think the slk is perfect it's a smaller car sportier and I honestly don't need all the stuff the tl has nav, 4 seats, I prefer two. I just wanted to get your opions on which one would b best and please explain in detail like if it breaks down alot or repairs r high ect...ect but I know this is an slk fourm so I know it is probably not unbiased but I did want to opinions of ppl who own the car but Try to see it from an unbiased standpoint. Thank you for you're help please excuse the type writing i was typing this on an iPhone

Welcome Nisiandrew. I am not familiar with the Acura TL other than it being a Honda Luxury Division vehicle.

The SLK is a different vehicle; i.e., personality-wise and will prolly impress your peers more. You only have space for 1 other person (which may be a plus for young drivers, less distraction), and the electronic dashboard gadgetry is different in a MB vehicle.

I really don't think consumer reports have any specific complaints about the SLK, as the SLK has not been crash rated (volume is too low, but it HAS BEEN crash tested extensively and shown to be safe). It is also ranked as one of the most reliable MBs in surveys for the last couple years.

The TL is a great commuter car, but no fun to drive. Your dad is either an accountant, or is emotionally attached to the car, so you really have no chance of selling it for an SLK.

In general, I don't think Honda / Acura people like the MB brand because it's almost the exact opposite of their values.

Acura (in my opinion):
#1 Reliability
#2 Low Running Cost
#3 Fuel Efficiency
#4 FWD vs RWD
#5 "Luxury" features
#6 Conservative styling, though I think that's changing to polarizing styling.
#7 Gagets / Technology
#8 Value Pricing / low purchase cost

When the bean counters count the beans, they look for the best "value". MB often doesn't add up for them. I think the purpose of a flashy car is to show you have some money or have a level of success. Having a luxury car that is a "good deal" is the opposite of that image.

One of my friends who bought a 08 TL commented to me that it isn't fun to drive, but gets him from place to place at a similar price to a loaded Honda Accord.

SLK will be much more expensive to maintain. It will probably break down more than a TL. The SLK Nav is not as good as the one in the TL.

Thank you everyone for your help. Does anyone know a website that reviewed the slk's safety features?

Uh, i think i already noted above that the SLK has not been officially rated.

Be assured though, it'll be safer than an Acura.

One thing I always want to remind people that is irrelevant in a way, but significant in what these "brands," mean.

Acura was founded in 1986.

The Benz side of Mercedes-Benz created the world's first car in 1886.

That is 100 years earlier.

I own both, acura and slk. I feel acura is more technologically advanced (i.e. nav) and is more reliable. If its daily commute, i'd go for the acura.

However, owning the slk is a lot of fun. Nothing beats riding top down in a good weather. Its got the looks, the speed and will put a smile on your face

If you're relying on your dad to pay for maintaince, gas etc. then go for the acura since it'll be easy on his account. But if you got your own income to support it, try the slk...you won't regret it (unless you get a lemon)

Is it just me who thinks its laughable to even compare a Mercedes Benz to a Acura or any other brand for that matter???

I know every other car maker compares their own vehicle to the german power machine....they do compare it because they know a mercedes benz is untouchable.

To this day, there is not one single mercedes benz commercial, that compares their own vehicle to others. Mercedes would never go down to that level.

Here is a nice original german commercial about why MB is safe& the best

Here is the translation:

ANGEL 1: "Ey, who are you by the way?" ANGEL 2: "I am an Guardian Angel.

ANGEL 1: Me Too.....and who are you guarding (protecting)?

ANGEL 2: A driver in his vehicle.

ANGEL 1: what kinda car is he driving? ANGEL 2: Mercedes!

ANGEL 1: You lazy Pig

the slk series r170 have been tested by the german ADAC with a 4 star crash rating...

The R171 was similar,a little higher...couldn't find the details though
