SLK 280 Durability

Hi Guys,

Would appreciate any reports from long term owners:

- How many miles on your SLK 280/350 series?

- What came up during that time that needed to be repaired outside of tires & battery?

I have 2007 SLK280 7 speed auto, leather. P1.

I've only had my 350 for a few months now. It's an 05' with 34,000 miles on it, 6-spd. The only mechanical problems I had were with the heating element in the driver seat, which I had to replace, and the outside temp guage...it was always about 10* cooler than it should have been.

Externally the only fault is that the clear coat is pealling pretty bad on the rear black pillars. I think that's because the previous owner kept it in the sun too much. I intend to get it fixed soon, it's a real eye sore.

Other than that it feels pretty solid.

Good point on the rear black pillars. I think that is a reminder to all of us, to not forget to wax those too, to have a bit of protection on them.

And some waxes also has some SPF (sun protection factor).

About 22 thousand miles.

I keep having problems with roof squeakiness, and everytime i take it in it comes back squeakier. Now the seat is squeaking also.

I have 34k on mine and had to bring it in for water coming in through the roof. The dealer replaced the rubber weather molding. It's great having the warranty service but worries me that I'm having those kind of problems.

I have a similar 2007 280 with 7g-tronic with 15,000 miles on it and the only problem was a blown left headlight bulb (xenon) which I had to replace.

Reidmart1: I've noticed that I have the same problem on the passenger side but only during a very heavy storm. And it's always only a few drops. Was it more serious in your case?

Other than that, the car feels very well built.

My 280 just coming up to 3 years old 17,000 miles.

Replaced both rear black pillars twice three attempts by dealer on one side. Water kept coming in after replacement.

replacement Battery which failed whilst roof opening and roof stuck 3 hours for Eng to fix.

New front fuse box. Headlights kept flickering.

Replacement rear window after 18 months, bottom 5mm of window cracked all the way along.

other than that it's been great.

KIKORS: Yes, my leak was much worse than that. In a heavy rain, the drip was constant: every five or six seconds or so. I would drench a towel in no time. But Mercedes will stand by their product and they replaced all of the rubber molding. Thank God it was still under warranty.

Quiet a durable car, I had a 2006 SLK280 its not technically mine but it was my parents. I drove it to its limits a couple of times before they sold it.

My 2006 SLK 280 has 38,000 on it I had a battery, a Yaw sensor under the passenger seat, and a right cam shaft timing sensor. It's been a great car! All repairs have been minor.

I had a 5th gear synchro go out, and the air bags failed 5 times, but the air bags were more a delivery / dealer ineptitude problem. Other then that, lots of squeeks from the top recently. 34,000 miles so far.

Biggest thing is the brakes. US$1,000 to replace them was a tad (and by a tad I mean half or more) more expensive then I predicted.

Other than that, everything works.

I bought mine used with 49000 miles.
I hope it won't break down!
I have a 3 year warranty though so if it breaks down, I REALLY hope it's during those 3 years.

I noticed that there was a bit of a jolt when I am decelerating sometimes (probably going into first gear from 2nd).

This could be start of a transmission problem.
Should I notify the dealer right away?

our '07 has 37K miles. It's my wife's daily driver. Replaced the seat heater elements last winter and the rear pillars last week as the paint was peeling/chipping off. All under warranty. It's a hard top convertible so i expect the squeaks from the top flexing on rough surfaces. Still quieter than a rag-top convertible. Paint on the hood chips easily but Langka Paint chip repair does a good job on chips.
