Question New SLK owner questions

Hello All,

Need experienced advice with 2007 SLK280, is there any issue with overuse of the convertible top? Wondering if I can extend and retract it daily with impunity.

Also wondering if anyone knows why the otherwise distinct dual exhaust arrangement joins at one short point.

Finally, wonder why I cannot find any crash test data at all on this car. Is there any to be found? I bought expecting the usual Benz high marks.

Thanks,
Don Rasmussen

No problems with the top. They designed it to be opened and closed many times per day for the life of the car.

The US government generally doesn't crash test low production cars and roadsters.

In the UK, R170's and R171's do pretty well on crash tests.

And, the roof is allegedly tested over a 20,000 cycle - they are meant to be fairly bulletproof.

3 slks, (02,05,09) top up and down at least 2x a day x 7 yrs = at least over 5100 operations with no issues.

I have seen a couple of SLK with roofs in partially opened positions carted off on flatbeds here. They tend to be older R170 cars, and maybe not well maintained.

I know mine will once the warranty lets out! ;-) I put it up and down FAR MORE often then 2x a day. More like 6 or 8 depending on the number of stops.

I had mine stop once when some pesky groceries popped the partition open during mid-top open. After a couple of minutes, the top sort of falls down and the trunk stays opened, which is the only beef with driving it home that way. It was a pain in the ass to try and lift the roof to get the partition closed again, but I was able to do it.

It freaks you out when it happens, even though it is not that big of a deal. I just wish it was like my old FIAT's headlights. You pop a cover, and wind this wheel what seems like an hour, and things go the way you want them. I know, I know, a 200 lbs. roof is a bit harder then a headlight!

Yeah, there is no U.S. crash data.

However, Mercedes puts a good amount of work into safety, for every car they make. It's a part of the company's values.

With ABS and Stability Program, you're also less likely to have an incident to begin with.

I'm always confused as to where the head/thorax side airbags are? Anyway, it has those, plus the front ones, plus knee ones.

I saw pictures online of a crash where a SLK flipped after being hit, and the people only had cuts. Another picture of a crash I saw the SLK front end was effectively drove over by another vehicle, and the people were ok.

Seems to be a pretty strong car.

Sides of the seats - so be damned careful if you are ever working on 'em!

Right - and thanks to other post suggesting bags are in the side of the seats. Here is a drawing of them, as they would appear for a few milliseconds and if eyes were fast enough to capture. ;-)

Here is the rest of the document, which told me plenty about my new SLK280.

SLK280 Document

It did not tell me about the user experience with top retract/deploy, thanks to users here I know it's okay for whatever my use. Today that was top down - ride down coast, top up - go to Giant New York Pizza parlor for 2 giant slices + wash it down. Top down for ride back up the coast, severe eyestrain day, so many tourists, arrive home and close it back up for at least another 15 minutes. ;-)

Car is a dream to operate, had many drivers closing me out for position before in my Accord, even when I was driving correctly - now I can choose which way it goes. Exhaust note sold me the car - makes me smile every time, often enjoy swinging my head around to look (at whatever) rather than going to the mirror.

No blind spots to worry about.

I am a safer driver in this car, regardless of the bag count.

Is there any maintenance that should be done on all the top's hinges and hydraulic cylinders? They look really hard to lubricate without making a mess.
