Escort Solo S2

Does anybody have any experience with the latest cordless Escort? It seems I keep getting stopped for just a littel over the limit - the good news is I'm only getting written warings but the bad news is they're piling up.

I don't want to go overboard - just something easy but still good. I hate wires so I like the cordless option so I can suffer through the battery changes.

Just wondering if anybody here has any real woorld expierence/opinons. I've read the review sites - but I'm not sure how much you can trust them as many are just fronts for resellers trying to steer you to their products ...

I have a cored, a cordless and a build-in one; the performance of all is outstanding.
But the laser detector is useless without the laser shifters; it only informs you that you just got a ticked.

Same comments on the laser detector - without shifters, it's just a "you've been done" alert.

I had the first generation S2, and absolutely loved it. I moved to an 8500 hardwired, but still have the S2 for rental cars.

With the SLK, I hated having to remove the detector ever time I stopped, so I installed a 9500ci, which I have to say is the best I've ever had.

Radar detectors are of limited use if you are the only car on the road, so you really need to understand what they will and will not do before relying on one. If a cop is using any one of the various flavors of "instant on", and you are the only car they hit, you are prolly going to get pulled over...

FYI, I really don't exceed the speed limit that much - no tickets in over 20 years - but in Louisiana and Texas, back roads tend to go from 55 to 30 with the 30 mph sign thoughtfully hidden behind a tree, with a cop behind the next tree having a nap with his radar on "cook", so pretty decent warning. In I-49, I've gotten 5-6 miles warning more than once with the 9500.

A factory rep from Escort Radar will be in Vegas and talk on laser and radar technology during the Fletcher Jones tech session. They will also be giving away a radar detector during the Saturday night dinner.

Initial Impressions of the Solo S2

Just a quick update for you all on the Solo S2.

I order the unit directly from their web site (www.escortradar.com) for $339.95 which seemed to be about the best price around and I liked that they have a 30 day return policy. The shipping was quick and I received it in less then a week.

The unit comes shipped in a very nice "travel case", which in my case will likely never get used again, but it packs it well and offers a nice presentation.

As far as the usage goes, it is very straight forward. Essentially slide the batteries in, stick it to the windshield, and turn it on. It also allows for setting several modes if you wish - ie disabling various band detection.

Because I've only been using it for a short time I've only passed a few police cruisers with their radar armed. In each of these cases the unit picked their signal up from well away, with plenty of time to slow down. They weren't using laser so I can't say how well that works at this stage.

I haven't had a lot of false signals yet either. There are a few buildings around that set off the X band, but those haven't been that frequent. I guess like any detector, there are some false beeps but I'd have to rate this at very good at keeping those to a minimum.

I love the fact that it doesn't need a power cord and it slides on and off the windshield bracket very easily. We have a lot of theft crimes here in the RGV so it is wise to remove the unit so somebody doesn't smash your window for a $300 item.

The one downside is that the alert volume is fairly low. While it has a setting for a lower or higher tone, even the higher tone is not sufficient to overcome the background noise when you have the top down and stereo on. Because of this I have mounted the unit on the drivers side of the rearview, as high as possible and as close to the mirror as I could. It doesn't block the vision at all and it is close enough to see the display. Still, with the top down, it is iffy that you'll hear the alert in time.

All in all I am very pleased with the unit so far. I do wish it was louder or brighter in order to get your attention, but with the top up it works fine.

Hey Gary - you going to be at the meet in 'vegas? I realize that more than half the sexiness of the S2 is the cordless-ness, but if you decide to go with a smartplug and hardwire, I can easily show you how to have it mute the radio on the car.

You still won't be able to really hear the detector, but the fact that the music drops is a pretty good warning in and of itself to "look up" ;-)

Wow John, what a cool feature, and you're right, the radio muting would certainly get my attention! Unfortunately I won't make it our to Vegas this year. I just got back from there a month ago and it is a good 3 day drive from here. I'd love to do it though and I'm really envious of Y'ALL getting together.

I will keep the mute feature in mind though - thanks for the tip! If hearing the alert proves to be a problem I may have to rethink the convienence of the cordless.

Gary

Update on my earlier post regarding the Solo S2 ...

After a couple of months I noticed that the unit would start to turn itself off after driving for a bit. This would vary anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours and it would go off without any warning and would not come back on unless the batteries were removed and reseated. Escort replaced the unit under warranty and the new unit worked without failure until a couple of weeks ago...

The replacement unit is now demonstrating the same symptoms as the first one - goes off without waring and batteries need to be removed to get it to turn back on. This time they say they will repair it instead of replace it so we'll see how that turns out. I'll report back on how Escorts service turns out to be. So far they have been very responsive.

I suspect that there is some design flaw that causes a failure over time from vibration or from the heat inside the car. If they can't resolve it I may have to have them replace it with a different model and end up getting a corded model after all.

Mine--which I've had for at least 5 years and therefore surely isn't the newest version--doesn't do this and has been trouble free.

The unit is supposed to turn off after a certain period detecting no vehicle motion, but of course not while you're driving. Perhaps it's the motion detector in yours.

Thanks for the comments. Its good to hear that you've had good luck with your unit - it gives me hope for mine!

The auto off feature you're speaking of is pretty cool. Good to have if you forget to turn it off when you park your car. It beeps at you several times to tell you it is turning off and then comes right back on when you push the button. In my case, the Solo just stops working without warning and can't be powered back on. More like a computer hang.

Well, it's off to the company for repair and we'll see how she goes
