Window movement when top is put down

When I retract the roof from outside with the key, the windows go all the way down and stay down.

When I retract the roof from inside with the switch on the center console, the windows open about 2" and then go back up and stay up.

Is there a way to retract the roof and have the windows go all the way down in the process from inside the car?

Thanks,
Todd

the smarttop module might assist you in that feature.

on 09's, that was also an issue. installing version 3.22 of smarttop solved it but of course you need to buy the mod. available in slkstore above. now the switch inside works like we want it to. when you put the top down, the windows go and stay down. is that what you want?

Weird - when I put my top down on the '55 with the key from outside (no, I've still not fitted my smarttop - it's sitting on my desk), the windows stay up, just like if I put it down from inside...

Todd,
I'm not sure what year you have, but on the '05 you can put all windows down (including the back windows) by tapping the roof button back twice in succession (release the knob after the second tap). The windows will all go fully down. Then you can retract the roof in the normal manner. I haven't tested it this way personally so I'm not sure if the windows will go back up when you fully retract the roof. That would be stupid if they did. I know this solution isn't exactly what you're wanting, but it only takes a second to do the windows. Give it a try and report back and let us know!

On my 2006:

top down via keyfob = windows down
top down via switch = windows up

If I use the "double click" on the switch to lower the windows *before* I drop the top, the windows come back up.

On my 05' the windows go down about 2in. and then back up whether it's from the key fob or the console button.

Hmmm, different results implys different programming. I think I'll have a wander around DAS tomorrow and see if I can find a setting buried somewhere not so obvious. Of course, I also may fit the SmartTop if the weather looks as crap as it does at the moment.

As you do that, try for a setting that allows bringing the rear windows up with the top down.
The center console switch will operate all four windows with the top up, but with the top down only the front window are affected.

Been there, tried that - even talked to one of the engineers in Germany my last trip over. Evidently the rear windows are only stable with the top up, so are always "down" by design when the top is down.

I’m trying to get my windows tinted, but there is no way to get to the rear side window so it can be properly applied.
Is there a way to lift the top manually with the windows up?

UK-C200 can probably tell you exactly how, but I believe MB has a special tool they use to prop the roof open. I also heard rumors of a broomstick being used. If you start opening the roof and then let go of button or keyfob, it will stay in place about 15 seconds, beeping at you, then go down or up depending on how far you made it. It won't completely retract or close. It will rest there in an in-between state with the top either back in the trunk or on the windshield pillars.

It might be best to let the local dealership handle tinting of the windows or find out who they recommend that is knowledgeable with the SLK roof mechanism.

The same procedure can be used for lubing the seals as well

The differences are based on age, if your car is pre-facelift as the OP's is and you don't have a smarttop fitted then the roof will -

Windows up - Door windows drop to clear seal, 1/4 panel windows drop, roof opens, door windows lift to mate with A-pillar seal for stability.

Windows down - 1/4 panel windows drop (if not already down), roof opens, door windows lift.

It's a fixed procedure, you can't change it unless you fit the smarttop that sits in-between the roof control module and the CAN to block/generate 'false' signals to trick the car and roof module.

By lift the top i assume you mean stow it in the trunk without first opening the windows?
The answer is no, not without depressurizing the system first and even then you would probably damage the rear windows when the roof moves.

If you have your dealer apply the tint or if you can drive slowly from your dealer to your shop (since the mechanism can't stand up to wind loads as John mentioned) then the dealer can command the rear windows up via DAS (its built into the controller in case of a roof being manually closed) or you can remove the rear paneling from the cabin and apply 12V to the window drive wiring directly to force them to move but you could easily destroy the motors/regulators doing that.

Adam and I just custom cut a broomstick to lube up his roof seals - and once again I forgot to measure the damned thing or take pictures. The MB tool actually clamps the roof in position, while the broomstick "props" in in place - important distinction as using the broomstick, you need to roof to be "forward" of the balance point, so it's "holding" the broomstick in place.

It's pretty trivial to do this for lubing the roof or roof mechanics, but does not address the need / desire to have the rear windows up - they drop before the roof goes down, and only raise when the roof is locked "up".

As Dan mentioned, the only way I can thing of to accomplish this would be to use DAS to command the windows up. I'd really not want to do the "apply voltage directly to the motors" - it's probably safe, but...

I have a 2007. The double tap does lower all windows, but they come back up when I put the top down.

odd . . .

Yep, that is what I want.

Will this SmartTop mod interfere with the infrared functionality that I already have with my key? I basicly won't be using that anymore, right . . . just be using the 3-clicks thing to raise and lower?

IR becomes irrelevent with the smart top - and yeah, 3 clicks and you are good to go. Best single mod for any SLK.

smarttop uses rf not ir
3 clicks for roof operation on remote

roof button in car:

Function 2 - One-Touch for the roof button ( 0=FACTORY / *1=ONETOUCH / 2=EXTENDED[!] )
When enabled, the center console button operation is enhanced as follows:

Holding down the button in either direction will operate the top as long as the button is held.

Tap OPEN 1x to open the roof completely and roll all windows down.

Tap OPEN 2x slowly (1 sec interval) to open the roof and raise the front windows.

Tap OPEN 2x quickly (like a mouse double-click) to automatically lower windows (SLK) / raise windows (CLK,SL).

Tap CLOSE 1x to close the roof completely and raise all windows up.

Tap CLOSE 2x quickly (like a mouse double-click) to automatically raise windows (SLK) / lower windows (CLK,SL).
When set to setting 2 (EXTENDED), it is possible to turn the ignition off and pull the key out, while the top operation continues. It is also possible to get out of the vehicle and lock the doors using the LOCK button, while the roof is closing.[!] USE WITH EXTRA CAUTION

remote fob:

Function 4 - Remote window operation ( 0=OFF / *1=ON )
This function allows window operation with the original remote using the RF signal. This works on cars with and without the IR receiver and allows for a much greater range than the close range IR solution.

Tap UNLOCK on the remote twice (in 1 sec intervals) to open the windows only.
Tap LOCK on the remote twice (in 1 sec intervals) to close the windows only.
Tapping either LOCK or UNLOCK button on the remote will interrupt the operation immediately.

The functionally of the IR remains, i.e., you can operate the roof with the remote key by the "aim, press and hold" method.
I still use this feature, albeit infrequently, when checking the roof movement/function and plan on interrupting the movement somewhere, usually to remove small leaves and twigs at the rubber seal area.
