I wanted to join some time ago but my local MBCA isn't very exciting. They have a couple of charity events and a cruise each year. I don't know if anything has changed. But I was members of the local BMW RMC (Rocky Mountain Chapter), I did own a M3 once, that club has way too much, I originally signed up for some autox and road courses. They have stuff going on every weekend.

Joining is a no brainer. In addition to a pretty decent magazine, you get 10% off all Mercedes purchases. Repairs, parts, cars, clothes...anything the dealer sells. You basically get your membership fee back after your first or second service A, B or C of the year. With two Mercedes in my garage, I always come out ahead.

And my two chapters do have some interesting trips and events. I just seem to never be available to participate.

Yes, very dull, and the events that they do have are more vintage/ classic orientated...classy, but i don't think i'd feel very welcome.

You certainly would be welcome here in South Florida.

In addition, the loyalty program offers a MB gift card worth $750 for the purchase of a used MB and $1500 for a new one. You have to be a member for one year to use it, but it certainly makes the $45 a year worthwhile.

The local section (chapter) activities vary from section to section. But one thing is constant among all of them. The members are very receptive of suggestions for activities -- especially from new people. So my advice is to find your local section, attend a meeting as a guest (yes, you can do that), and ask questions and tell the members what kind of activities you would like. I'll bet they will welcome your ideas. The job of running most MBCA sections usually falls to a group of people who (like me) have been active in their MBCA section for some time -- and frankly we are out of ideas and welcome new ones.

Here's another thing to consider. My six years of membership have cost me $270. The value of new car rebates, meeting and event door prices, and dealer discounts have netted me over $,4,000 in value.

The Loyalty program does not do it for those of us who keep our cars awhile. Especially since we bought the MB before we were in the program. If MB wanted my loyalty, they could have credited me the 6 months of Sirius and Tele-Aid they REFUSED to while my car sat waiting for a radiator support they refused to send to repair it while their dealer made the car into total loss.

Not many events here in Florida. I offered to even host some events during the summer for South Florida and they never took me up. Having lunch on a cruise ship is NOT my idea of car club fun. MBCA has not had the appeal that Fiero and Miata clubs have.

I am not an MBCA member anymore. I got tired of all the mailings for the raffles. I sat down and totalled everything up, all the costs and dues and raflle tickets sold and it was obscene the amount of money they take in with so few events and fun. Not a value. Take a look at the salaries of the the people running it, they are amazing! Sweet gig! Seriously, do the math!

They refused to publish a "letter to the editor" of the magazine stating what my dealer did to kill my car. They also refused to write a letter to MBUSA asking (not promising me anything) MBUSA to allow me to get my Sport Suspension option on my replacement 2006 for the 1,315 mile 2005 they totalled, or anything. If they won't help you get closer to the manufacturer what good are they?

Even getting into the SLS AMG program through my outside contacts, MBCA is not the best link to the factory and what is going on.

The magazine was nicely done however, and there are nice people in the South Florida chapter. Maybe at a later date I will rethink it, but for now the money is better spent on other things.

As far as other ideas, well I offered them, and I offered to do the work, and I offered my house. I even offered to let them use my driveway to park for the autoshow (I am closer then paid parking) and nothing. What else can I do?

RacerCub68:

I'm the membership chair of our local section. Pursuant to recent direction of our national organization, all sections should now be surveying their members (and prospective members to the extent possible) to determine the wishes of these people as to types of events. Our section has monthly dinner meetings, tech presentations, hands-on tech events, parties, road trips, rallies, charitable activities, and car shows. We are a little light on competitive track events, as our membership base doesn't seem to like wearing out a set of tires on a single afternoon. We Oklahomans are a frugal lot! But some other sections do have many such events, where the membership base desires them.

All sections should be surveying their membership base now. So, if there is a type of event that you would like that the South Florida Section does no offer, contact the section President and say "I would join if ----". I'd be surprised if the president failed to take you up on it -- especially if you offered to host the event.

The actual events I suggested were not centered on Motorsports at all. I offered to host people for BBQ, detailing sessions featuring certified detailers instructing, etc., with me providing the instructors, place etc.

After all, few people in Mercedes-Benz clubs actually own "sports" and "track" cars.

RacerCub68.

If you had approached my section with your offer to host such an event, our response would have been "Yes sir, when could we do that". We had a guy who showed up at a meeting for the first time and offered to set up a road trip to a historic hotel not too far away for an overnight road trip for our section. Our officers said "Heck yes, great idea, do it." We did it and it turned out to be about the best event we've held in recent memory.

The event you offered to host would be perfect in my Central Oklahoma Section, according to what we officers have learned about our members' interests. I'll bet the South Florida members would have liked it as well. It is a shame that none of the officers there took an interest in it. And it is a shame that you don't live in Central Oklahoma. Why, you'd be elected to be an officer in no time!

You are correct that Most MBCA members in any given section probably don't own true track cars. Neither of my Mercedes is. My Honda S 2000 is, but I don't want to buy a new set of tires for it either!

Indeed, there are good sections and sections that frankly "need a little help." But even those who live in an area lacking a good section can get benefit form MBCA membership. The majority of dealers give a discount of 10% or so on parts to members. Some after market sources also give MBCA members a discount; such as Performance Products which gives 15%. And "The Star" is a good magazine, where we can read about many Mercedes-related topics all the way from vintage cars to new introductions.

We've had some of the MBCA chapters decline adding us as a resource link on their chapter sites. I hope in time they consider adding us since the members on this site have a tremendous amount of knowledge to offer the SLK owner and enthusiast which can only benefit an MBCA member and chapter.

Sulley:

I have read posts on the MBCA board that a deal is in the works to have a link to your site on the MBCA site, and vice versa. Is this true? The sections (chapters), on the other hand, operate under some rather stringent rules laid down by our national organization, and may be having problems with putting and SLKWorld link on their own sites because of these rules. I am an active MBCA member and a section officer (Central Oklahoma) and find that we are often limited by National's rules. That's our problem, and I have argued with our president (so far, unsuccessfully) about this in favor of inclusion of the SLKWorld link.

Please let me know whether there is such a deal in the works with the MBCA board.

I've not been contacted by anyone from MBCA but would welcome an opportunity to be linked to their site and to reciprocate. If anyone needs to contact me they can email [email protected]. Thanks for the updates.

I was all psyched to join the local MBCA chapter for the discounts and maybe a couple fun events a year. I was in my local dealership last week, getting an O2 sensor replaced on the ML. To my delight, they had MBCA brochures sitting at the parts counter. I kindly asked the lady if they offered parts and labor discounts to MBCA members. She checked with another person and then remarked "No, we're not affiliated. We just let someone put their brochures there." I was astounded! I had just read in the Chaparral section (Southwest Arizona) an article welcoming Mercedes Benz of Tucson as a sponsor! What gives?

Just decided to join myself. I'm not holding out much hope that my dealer will offer discounts becasue I haven't seen them offer too many "perks". I have a routine service coming up so we'll see.

I did figured I'd check out the MBCA and give it a year anyway to see what I thought.

Brian:

Unfortunately, the dealer discount to MBCA members (or not) depends on the individual dealer. No dealer is "affiliated" with MBCA, but some are smart enough to realize that it is to their advantage to have a "fan club". We are working on the others. We may not get them all on board, but we hope to get many more.

When I was looking for an up-scale sedan back ina the fall of '03, I asked the dealers for each make "on my list" if there were a car club for their particular car. If the answer were "no" I scratched that car off my list. For what I was paying, there darn sure ought to be a club, IMO. I ended up with MB, Jag, and BMW on my list, and bought the one of these I liked best, which was an MB. I am not alone in my opinion on this, and some MB dealers ought to wake up and realize how many people become interested in MB because of the existance of MBCA.

And for all you new MBCA members, check out your local section (chapter) to see what activities and meetings it offers. Attend one or more of them. That's where a lot of the fun is.

I have spoken with our MBCA section (chapter) president, and have succeeded in convincing him to put a link to slkworld on our section's web site. Because membership is offered at $45 per year, our section president thought it would amount to an ad for commercial purposes, for which we charge a fee to be included on our web site. I explained to him that the slkworld fee is voluntary, and the forum can be used whether one pays the fee to "join" or not. Indeed, I told him about how I initially paid the fee to slk world when I was financially having a good year, but have not paid recently as I have recently lost enough money since then to have bought a Maybach! Yet, I can still use the slk world forum.

And be advised that when I turn things around (which I will) I will pay the membership fee to slkworld again.

With that done, I'm working on getting slkworld added as a resource link on the national MBCA forum. I understand that the MBCA forum administrator has approved this if slkworld would will similarly list the MBCA forum as a reference. This would be great because the MBCA forum includes topics for virtually all MB cars built in my rather long lifetime -- and thus doesn't contain a lot of SLK-specific info. It would also be great because when happy SLK owners go looking for a sedan, SUV, coupe, or any car that is not a sports car, they naturally gravitate toward MB -- and the MBCA forum is a great source of info on these other types of MBs.

I have received word that that administrator of the MBCA board has emailed you, and asked you to call him concerning a mutual "link up" I will be monitoring this board and the MBCA board to see the outcome.
