Imporitng SLK 350 to Canada from the US

finally ... 15th post. PM finally working!!!

So I bought an SLK350.. just waiting to pick it up.

A bit concerened about when it comes back to Canada because i've heard so many conflicting stories about what needs to be done and what doesn't need to be done.

1) DO I NEED A NEW CLUSTER?

I've heard that some people have, but some people don't. I believe if you want to keep the factory warranty, you have to bring it to Canadian specs. If you don't... do you still need to change the cluster? Is the digital speedo good enough regardless?

2) What sorts of papers do you need? i've imported my Audi Allroad and Nissan 300zx. So I'm not new to this.

I did hear that you need an admissibility letter from mercedes benz... is this true?

I know about the standard recall clearance letter etc.

Hi. Curious, what's the benefit of importing a U.S. spec SLK 350 to Canada? Can't help with any of your questions, hopefully someone can.

They're a LOT cheaper in the US than in Canada, especially right now. When the US dollar is weak like it is right now (right now it's $1.1 CAD to $1 USD), the Canadian prices don't adjust (they're usually at about 1.3 to 1) so the US cars are a lot more attractive.

I believe I paid a hefty premium to buy a Canadian car, but the exchange rate wasn't as much in my favour and I was worried about warranty issues. I've already had to bring mine in a couple times for warranty work, and they added 2 years of CPO warranty after the factory one expires.

Please keep us updated on how the process goes and how the warranty works. I might be in the market for a 2009 one in a few years.

As for your question about the cluster, on my Canadian SLK 55 there is a setting you can change for the cluster to display mph or km/h. The analog speedometer will change from mph to km/h and the needle will display the speed in the selected unit, so I don't think there will be a cluster change necessary.

I can't answer your other questions, but please update us with what Mercedes Canada is going to charge you for any "conversion"...I'm quite curious to know. I do know that the bumper standards have been relaxed in Canada recently to match US standards so you won't have to change those.

btw.. difference is approx $10k Canadian said and done.

Even with all the taxes and exchange rate.

The cheapest an slk350 at mercedes-benz.ca is a 2005 BASE model with no bells and whistles. There asking $38,000 or about $44,000 out the door.

I'm picking mine up for about $22,000 USD factor in exchange rate, taxes, duties i'm at $29,000ish.

So maybe close to $15k.

I can't speak for the 350 (it looks like you might have to change the cluster since it only goes to 160), but take a look at the pics. The mph and km/h indicators on the analog gauge are not fixed on my 55. I wonder if the US SLK55's are like this too?

You still have to factor in what Mercedes will charge you for the conversion, and the cost of losing the 2 additional years of Star-Certified warranty they give you in Canada so it might not end up being quite that much. There still is a significant savings though.

On the 2008 SLK55 US spec analog speedometer only goes up to 200.

Hmm, I think on the '350 US spec is only 160mph. It does support "Km/h" switch, and both needle and digital switch. Obviously you are still only going to see "160" max on the analogue display.

Boomie....

You need a letter of admissibility from Mercedes.

Go here:
http://www.mercedes-benz.ca/index.cfm?id=6871

Aside from listing which models are admissible, you can request a letter online as well, you just need to know the VIN. It should take a couple of weeks to get, and will list what you have to do.

I calculate $29,590.54 to bring it into Ontario, before any Mercedes mods.

There's a calculator here:
http://www.importcartocanada.info/to...ce-calculator/

The sorts of numbers for the conversion seem to be all over the place. One guy was about $750 for the "inspection" and $4,000 to $5,000 for the conversion. Another was $1,750 to convert, and they did change the cluster.

You should come out ahead, though as eatbeme says, you lose the warranty part.

Cheers!

i think the information is incorrect.

i think i can bring in the slk350 mod free.

MB tries to intimidate you into thinking you need to do all these things to make the car admissible.

i got that letter from mb saying the car does not meet safety standards in canada. but it does say the car is admissible.

in addition i got the recall letter already.

but heres the deal. RIV says you need daytime running lights (which is a setting that can be easily turned on). Secondly, child teather archors (convert don't need). The gov't has relaxed the rules big time.

I heard many rumors about the cluster needing to be done. False. How does the cluster influence if it meets safety standards? Yes the speedo is in mph, but it also has a digital speedo in kmph... but even so, the canadian gov't doesn't care. They just want you to attach a "label" that crappy tire will give you.

Finally, i think its all a load of crap. MB wants you to do this stuff so they make money. You do need to do whatever MB says if you want to keep your warranty. Luckily for me, mine is out of warranty.

I'm still under the impession it will cost me nothing to mod.

I'll keep you guys in the loop.

Boomie....

The requirement comes from Transport Canada actually. The rules changed recently, and actually they made them tougher.

Go to the government site:
http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/safev...list/vafus.pdf

Go to passenger cars (section 3), and look for Mercedes, and you will see the requirements. This is the same info RIV uses.

It's not just Mercedes. BMW, Ferrari, Jaguar, Lamborghini, Volvo and others now require the manufacture to issue the requirements. I think the government is trying to avoid being responsible for cars meeting Canadian safety specs. It used to be a lot easier, as pretty much any "mechanic" (and there were a few friendly ones around) could say the car met government regulations.

You say you already bought the car right? How did you get the recall clearance letter? I thought for Mercedes, only they were issuing them? You'll want that before you show up at the border, or you may find yourself stuck there.

There are always ways of course.

Good Luck!

For what it's worth, it looks to me like Canadian cars are spec'd with a EUR/KM Cluster - so if you did need to have it replaced, I'd keep an eye out on the German and French eBay sites. Probably have better luck in German - they have a very active SLK community.

Local guy I talked to imported Sl500 and he had to replace cluster . He said it had nothing to do with Mercedes but instead it was Canadian safety standards. I think he said it had something to do with the e-brake on signage .

REALLY? safety standards? my Audi Allroad and 300zx all have the american ebrake label.

i think its a load of crap. This is whats on the RIV site.

I think they make you change the cluster so you can transfer the warranty.

Passenger vehicles
  • Recall clearance letter
The vehicle must bear a manufacturer's valid U.S. statement of compliance label at the time of
    importation.
The Registrar of Imported Vehicles will mail a Canadian statement of compliance label to you
    after passing the federal inspection.
    Valid alpha-numeric 17-digit VIN
Metric speedometer and odometer labels (provided by inspection centre)
    Daytime running lights
Child restraint tether anchorage hardware kit
Child restraint tether anchorage point locations
    (refer to
    Admissibility List)
French supplementary restraint system label for airbags that require periodic maintenance
    NEW:
If the GVWR of this vehicle is less than 10,000 lbs, and the manufacture date after September 1, 2007, it must be equipped with an electronic immobilizer system that meets CMVSS 114.

It's not that difficult

You will need a new cluster and a recall letter from the US. Before gettign started I would suggest getting a letter of admissibility for MB Canada.

It will tell you the work will have to be done at an MB dealer. It will tell you the for a letter certifying the work was done to convert to Canadian standards will be $500.

The dealership will charger you for the work (3 hours), the parts ($1100) and their certification feee ($1000)

Go through a customs broker - it will cost you $200 but it is worth it, You will be bringing the car in commercial customs port and not as a individual. This gets you a little more flexibility in when the work gets done.

They will charge your their fee ($200), duty at 6% then GST (5%).

When you register the car in your province, they will tack on the PST.

Have fun!

see the thing is, no one has told me why the cluster needs to be done. And everything I've got is the cluster needs to be done to keep the original manufactures warranty.

How on earth can a cluster effect canadian safety standards? thats the dumbest thing i ever heard.

It's not a warranty or safety issue, it's a regulatory issue - The US cluster has MPH only, the Canadian cluster has KmPH only.

The cluster has to be programed to VIN so you can't even sell your used cluster.

Dumb (and expensive) as h3ll.
