My new slk dilemma!

I need some advice on choosing a slk and you guys seem to be the gurus
I have two options:

option a)
Slk 280 (late 06 early 07 model) with only 7000 km's done on it. Its almost like new. Includes airscarf.
OR
option b)
slk 200 (09 facelifted version) brand new with an amg styling kit but probably no airscarf.

The brand new car will probably end up being a bit cheaper (ironically) because of a government grants. Is the 280 a much better engine? Or should i just buy the 200 new?
Thanks to those that read this!

Money wise, i'd go for slk 200 since you're getting it cheaper and getting gov't grants.

However, if you feel the need for airscarf (driving in spring/fall with temps below 60's/50's) then go for that.

Welcome to the forum from London! Take a minute and update your profile with your location, helps answer some questions!

Personally, I think airscarf is a must have, as it makes the difference between a marginally topdown day and keeping the top up. I'm a top down sorta guy!

The other big difference are the electronics, the NTG2.5 COMAND is *way* better than the NTG2 in the pre-facelifted cars. You can retrofit, but figure $2k usd at least to do it.

I've not driven a 280, but I have a C series sport coupe with the 200k engine - it's a solid engine, but it's still a 4 cylinder vs a 6. In the C - which is a bit heaver than the SLK (I think?), its damned adequate, cruises at 90 easily, and sips petrol. It's not what I'd describe as "sporty", but then again I'm compairing it to a '55 and a 350...

I'd say drive both, see what leaves a bigger smile on your face. Unlike the transition to the 350/55, the suspension in both shoudl be the same, so ride quality should be pretty similar.

Thanks for your reply guys, its been really helpful. If airscarf is one of the determining factors, i can get it in the new car too (and i get the feeling here that i should? ).
Pardon my ignorance but i got slightly lost here:
"The other big difference are the electronics, the NTG2.5 COMAND is *way* better than the NTG2 in the pre-facelifted cars. You can retrofit, but figure $2k usd at least to do it."
Can anyone clarify?
Thanks again.

One of the biggest changes to the FL SLK was the generational change of the ICE - "In Car Entertainment" system. The pre-FL models are running on a system designed in the mid late 90's, the FL (NTG2.5) cars are running on something designed in the mid 2000's. Huge difference in functionality and "ease of use".

If you get a pre-FL'd car, and think you may want to upgrade, it's much easier (and cheaper) to start with a car that does not have COMAND 2 in it.

Depends on your location, tax's etc. From a birds eye perspective, 06 280 with 7,000km

Nothing compares to a brand new car, I´d rather prefer it without airscarf to the other model. Beside that it doesn´t have the facelift.

I confirm that the Comand 2.5 NGT is much better than the 2.0 (I have it in my 2004 ML), in many ways (hard drive, sd card, better telematics, bluetooth).

Tough choice, but in my experience the Airscarf is very practicle.

I'd go for new. Maybe you can order up one with Airscarf. With new, at least there's no question about the car's history.

I think what you're looking at is 6 vs. 4 cylinders. Always go for power! Airscarf is nice. If you have COMAND in both cars - there may be a difference in the interface but it's essentially the same product.

Check out insurance. What about road tax? The SLK200 may be better if you're looking to be frugal. The SLK280 would be the winner for me - and probably has some wiggle room in the price if you're a strong buyer.

Personal opinion, there's no comparison between NTG2 and NTG2.5 - and trust me, the UI is the least of the differences.

If we don't know your location, we can't possibly give you accurate advice on the 6 vs. 4 issue and the airscarf issue. There are posters from all over the world here. If you live in Norway, the advice would be the 4 (high gas prices) and airscarf (gets cold there). But if you live in southern California, USA (lower gas prices and warmer temps) the advice would be the 6 with added airscarf.

I have had C class loaners with the 2.5 system, and while I find the interface different, I really did not see it as so much better. I will tell you, the woman's voice seems like she was beaten to within an inch of her life. Everything was an iffy question. "In 500 feet, turn right?"

What are the real differences between them?

One thing is for sure, the SLK's 2.5 NAV screen looks too low, like it is not centered properly. They should have put the SD slot underneath or something.

Integrated Navigation, Bluetooth, and voice control. Faster primary and navigation processor, ability to store and rip MP3's on internal hard drive. Supports MOST SDARS+HDRadio or DAB digital. Better traffic contention management and re-routing. Much better contact and address management. Media Interface with iPod and USB native integration into CAN and COMAND. Rear-View Camera.

That's off the top of my head - I'm sure I've missed some interesting bits, but to me it's a huge step forward.

Well I'm biased, but I prefer the facelifted front of the new model and the 183hp engine with a 6M box is good fun. I can't recommend the SLK200 with auto box though, not much fun there (well I didn't like it enough to nuy one).

Also I could be wrong, but I don't think the I4 engine is as heavy as the V6 units (280 and 350) and suspect it helps with handling. That said the V6 soundtrack will be nicer than the I4.

Both my wife and I enjoy our SLK200 and although it's not as quick as the others, it goes along well enough.

As for airscarf, our car doesn't have it and I have no problem having the top down as long as it's not raining. Last winter (when I was home), I put a jacket on when I wanted the top down.
