I'd be surprised if there's a fixed period between updates....

Doesn't make sense. I don't know any car manufacturer that has that rigid redesign guideline. Perhaps on average the SLK is updated every 7 years, but that would be the trend not the rule.

yes, its true and I am very disappointed when I saw the spy pictures of the next generation of SLK R172
It is schedule to launch in 2012
here are my observations:

the current F1 nose hood is gone, they are putting back the R170 hood.
which I think its not keeping up with the future technology.

the inside is pretty well a copy of the R171
you call this a ne style?

the back end is like a Acura

oh my gosh, what have they done!!!

Speaking of updates, the dealer is probably referring to the Baumuster (type), like 170.xxx to 171.xxx. Those are model type changes. There are updates to the model between the type changes. As an example, the SLK350 changed from a 171.456 to a 171.458 in MY2008. The SLK280 and SLK300 is the same type 171.454. I think thats a MBUSA model description issue.

well lets see
97-mid 2000 then facelift - 04 then facelift and 08 then facelift not to mention HP and engine changes. Looks like 3-4 years between changes.
