Key Unblocking An SLK R171

I have an R171 and the spare key is useless. Investigation revealed that ALL key tracks had previously been blocked other than for my main key. MB dealership have been unable to unblock the tracks to allow access to my second spare key. The have tried a process of 7 hours using a special key supplied by MB with security codes but this only managed to work the remote function, NOT the ignition. They now say they need to replace the ignition at a cost to me as they say this is not warranty despite there being an obvious fault with the ignition (not unblocking). The model is 2006 and still under warranty. Can anyone offer any help or advice??

I agree with them that the ignition needs to be changed, but it should be a warranty issue, unless they can prove this was something done on purpose by the previous owner.

from what i have read, once locked, the blocks are permanent, so i have no idea why they even spent the time trying, hopefully they aren't going to try to bill you for that as well.

I'm gonna close this one, Mike i replied to your PM.

This sounds like normal function to me and as much as i hate to be the bearer of bad news it's not really MB's problem what the previous owner has done to the car, if the EIS was faulty it would not start.
