Ebay SLK

Better yet...whose ebayed a car ever off ebay? I have to be honest, after haggling for more than I care to...the prices on ebay are exactly in the range that I was looking for. My only concern is...should I be worried about fraud?

Let me time-warp us back 1 week. The dealer was trying to sell me on a used 350, white for 30k. I said no f'ing way. The lowest he would go was around 27 and I still wasn't having it. This week, I log onto ebay and see AMG's in the exact same price range, if not cheeper! Note, they were still under warrenty and had an inspection done.

What I'm looking for is for your opinions. All are welcome. What do you think of buying a car off ebay? Have you ever done it before? Would you do it again? Do you consider it safe? What would you recommend? Etc.

Thanks guys!

I can answer all your questions. Yup, yup, and yup. I'm a habitual eBayer. I purchased both my wife's 2006 SLK 350 used off eBay, Dec 2005, and my 2005 SLK 55 in March 2007. Do your home work, inspect it in person before paying. Good luck!

I've sold one and bought two on eBay. I did go to see both purchases personally prior to the sale, and one one of the two I negotiated with the dealer "off-line" so it wasn't a pure eBay purchase, but I found it there. If the seller has a good approval rating, and has sales numbers in the hundreds with no negative feedback, you're probably as safe as you'd be buying a used car from a dealer...

I would even venture and say safer. I had some problems with the dealer that sold me the car, I still don't have the title. I am currently haggling with another dealer to get a 2006 CLS500 Designo, they want 50k, I would like to pay 43k. We'll see how that goes.

I bought mine off ebay as well. Before bidding I talked to the seller on the phone several times and got my questions answered. Final sale was contingent on my having an independent inspection performed and being happy with the results. I arranged my own financing. Seller overnight mailed the original title to my bank in exchange for a guaranteed funds letter. Once the bank received the original clear and free title, they issued me a check for the purchase. I went to Dept. of Motor Vehicles website and ordered a 90 day temp permit so I could drive the car back. I flew out with the check in hand to inspect the car and take possession. After successful inspection, I signed the purchase contract paperwork and hit the road! Most the cars sold on ebay offer "vehicle protection plan", but read the policy. You'll see that it's written brilliantly and almost any claim you'd try to make would have a way out. In other words, do your own inspection and don't rely on ebay to save you.

There are many small dealers selling cars through ebay so in reality it's no different than walking onto a used car lot. If you're purchasing out of state, they can usually waive the sales tax, title, and other fees. The final thing to consider when buying from a dealer versus private party is that in most states private party sales are exempt from sales/use tax. Research your state's rules on tax so you can figure that into your final "out the door" price. In the end, don't follow through with the purchase unless you are completely at ease. No amount of positive ebay feedback is worth following through on a bad deal.

Never bought a car off ebay but I have sold three motor cycles. If they're all as honest as me then no problem!

As long as the title's good and you do your homework, the fact that there's warranty must minimise the risk.

I bought both my Land Rovers off eBay - as others as said, do you homework, and like anything else, "too good to be true" always is, regardless of where you find it.
