I'd guess he's asking about the fog lights?

I get the impression he is asking do Bi-X's have Xenon high and low beams because he can see yellow halogens coming on when the switches to high(main) beam.

In that case the answer is yes, a Bi-X headlamp is a single bulb with a flap to block some of the light when your in low beam, the halogen bulb does come on with the high beam mode but it is NOT the high beam.

A plus, I'm impressed. Did you use a "enigma" machine to dichiper the code.

I think what he means by regular light is the low beam, and longer and further light is the high beam.

DansSLK has the Rosetta Stone.

I always thought bi-xenon meant bifocal Xenon: one for near vision and the other for far vision joking.

I am so sorry guys
I meant to write that up in proper English. This is what happened.
After I traded 08 C to 06 SLK, I thought the car was equipped with bi-xenon.
then I was on my way to movie theatre with my girlfriend to see Angels and Demon.
then out of curiosity, I switched to high beam to see how far it would reach. then I discovered that it does not seem to be as bright enough as the c class.
so when I got to the theatre, I checked em out. when the car was on low beam, it was definitely, xenon but when I switched to high beam, it seemed like a halogen rather than xenon. then I got mad. I thought dealer sold me a car with wrong info.
as I got into the theatre, I could not resist my self asking you guys. I wanted to ask you all as fast I could that I posted the question over the i phone. because, I was in such a hurry, I just.... garbled I guess. I dont know why but I could not think of the proper term too. sorry for the confusion
thanx

so I get the impression that the 06 SLK is not bi xenon that only the low beam is the xenon? right?

thanx all

OK, we understand your question and Dan was right from the start. The bi-xenons use one D2S HID bulb for the low and high beams and the high beam is assisted with a secondary H7 halogen bulb, which most mistake for the high beam. Confusing but it works.

Like you, kimidjk, I thought at first that the lights were only Xenon on dip.

But after advice from this forum and M-B it was explained to me that (and if you park close to a light coloured wall at night and check the lights it will become obvious) the Xenon light (in the small round lens in the light unit) serves both dip and main beam.

On dip, part of the beam is covered by a shutter, illuminating only the road near you.

Select main beam and the shutter uncovers the bulb completely, you still have the low (near) illumination but now the whole bulb is uncovered and can now illuminate the main beam (distant) area.

At the same time the halogen lamp inboard of the small lens is switched on, it acts like an auxiliary or long range lamp to improve the overall lighting.

Like you I thought that the halogen lamp was the main beam I was perhaps being short changed with only "Uni" Xenons!!

If you want get rid of the yellow appearance of the auxilliary lamp you can change the H7 bulb in it for an "Ice Blue" bulb-it won't give more light but will get rid of the apparent yellow look-it's not really yellow, it's just that the Xenons are extremely white/blue.

Hope this helps.

I was thinking of contacting Jkatt's recommended seller in order to get the high beams done in an HID retrofit kit.

JKatt advertised a while ago on here that he had contacted a specific US seller of HID kits and had a special bulb made up to enable you to convert the High Beam Bulb of a non BIX headlight to HID. The problem is the shape of the bulb holder with its twist lock function. Normally the bulb holder prevents you from converting this to HID.

Obviously this is less important on a BIX headlight since the Halogen bulb is not the main supplier of light, but many object to its yellowness.

On the non BIX headlight, there is no movement of the dip beam bulb which means all the high beam light is sourced from that second H7 bulb.

I am just saying that I would like to convert that main beam H7 secondary bulb into an HID and that JKatt's contact can help with that.

yeah, it's killing me.

But then the point is, even people with genuine BIX have halogen main beam to compliment the redirected D2S HID bulb. This lets everyone remove the shame of halogen incandescent bulbs from their lives.

That halogen is supplimental with a captial S, you can lose it and not suffer any real ill effect's, that beautiful xenon blub burning bright and white next to it

I don't mean to piss on your parade here and its your call at the end of the day but you know that fitting Xenon headlamps without auto leveling is illegal right mate?

I know loadsa people do it but just FYI

I don't think it is actually illegal so much as OEM suppliers are not allowed to do it.

I don't think there are laws making it a criminal offence to fit them. Its particularly odd since I have passed several MOTs with aftermarket HIDs fitted, so it's obviously not such a big deal.

Much as I would love BIX, I simply can't get hold of it for a UK car. I would fit it without the aftermarket levellers in a second if I could find a set. That's why I jumped on the LHD set I have without thinking it through.

I've come close on many occasions to just fitting it and thinking sod it, I don't care that it the wrong beam pattern. I even considered blocking off the false horizon so the beam just stayed level all the way across, meaning LHD or RHD made no difference, but in the end, the only thing I could do was sell the BIX and just change the H7 for an HID.
