Ooh oooooh that smell.

So after giving my 350 a good wash after what seems like weeks of rain I decided to take her out and stretch her legs. It's a beautiful day so I have the top down. I come down to the end of the boulevard, come to the stop and make a left beside the highway, it's an open empty stretch so I open her up and quickly pick it up speed. In the rear view mirror I see what looks like a Nissan coming up fast. Looks like he wants to play. I let off the gas and coast to let him catch up. Traffic light up ahead with some traffic waiting. He's now beside me, looks like a tuner. He's revving his engine, light changes and the traffic in front of him starts moving faster so I fold in behind him. We enter the highway, he changes lanes and we are side by side and start picking up speed measuring each other out. I start out running him but he is always just there. I start coming up on a car so I let off and as he passes me I can hear his engine starting to whine, as I get behind him I start to smell it,,,,, the smell of Nitrous. I let off the gas and let him go. Maybe if I had JBanks`s car I could take him but not with my stock engine.

You sure it was nitrous? Did a bit of surfing and found two interesting tidbits. I have a feeling what you smelled was sulfur dioxide (rotten eggs) maybe?? I get that a lot when the car ahead of me tries to floor it and oooh the crap that comes out of his tailpipe.

Rotten Eggs
The smell of rotten eggs is due to a compound called hydrogen sulfide. This comes from the small amount of sulfur that is present in the fuel. Normally the sulfur is converted to sulfur dioxide, which has no odor. When the converter breaks or the filtering layers have worn down inside the converter, the sulfur is not transformed into the odorless form. Therefore a strong rotten egg smell is produced. Another possible cause for this smell may be that the converter is plugged. Unfortunately you cannot repair a converter but need to have it completely replaced. Two other causes of rotten eggs besides a broken catalytic converter include an engine that is running too hot or a broken fuel pressure regulator. You can easily deal with the fuel pressure regulator by replacing the fuel filter.

You might be surprised to know that nitrous by itself really does not have a smell without the additive. It is VERY possible that someone is running medical grade nitrous without the additive thus no smell. If a car running nitrous with the additive is tuned properly you will not notice any differnt smell at all. As for people saying they are running fat on fuel and lean on nitrous and that is how you smell nitrous...trust me when I tell you that you are not smelling nitrous because the nitrous is burning some of the extra fuel...what you are smelling is a fat condition of unburned fuel. If you are lean on the nitrous side you are smelling aluminum from the pistons you are burning. For those of you who do not have a lot of experience with nitrous here is something to think about: You can run a safe nitrous and fuel jetting but if you have either a low fuel pressure situation or a seriously high bottle pressure you will be lean and in the danger zone.

Yes, nothing wrong with that, best advice I ever got was "don't grow up". "But, be responsible for my actions."

Best smell of all has to be Castrol R racing oil, so evocative of racing bike meets.
My motorcycle buddies and I used to pop a bit in our petrol tanks to get the smell.
Couldn't smell your own of course but you could sure smell the others!
Didn't make you go fast like nitrous though, you just felt like you were!

With David on the R.

We work with nitrous.

My poor shiftmate still get nervy if he hears a whooshing sound behind him.

And we couldn't smell it unless something was wrong.
Ally was one hint, an acidic smell the other.
