Potential future “kill” story

So, I just got a new SLK. A buddy of mine has a Buick grand national. He is having it shipped here. After seeing my AMG, he claims his Buick will toast my car. The grand national at its peak is 0 to 60 of 4.7 seconds. I was advised by him that he has a few “bolt-ons“. Do I embarrass him, or will I be embarrassed?

Depends on if he is stock. Those were easy to modify and wicked fast with increased boost, better tires (slicks or drag radials), and performance chips.

Stock, with standard tires sizes from the 80's, you should blow him into the weeds. Also, he has to know how to launch a turbo car, it is wildly different than just taking foot off brake and moving it to the throttle, has to build boost first to really launch hard, that is where monster soft tires will really be needed.

First Vid appeared to be stock GN, another related video of GN vs C63 was definitely NOT STOCK, had nice wrinkle wall slicks, not a street car. and yes it turned a 9.88 quarter on a 1.77 light, the C63 was anchored to the line with a 3.45 light and a 10.9 ET, that wasn't stock either. the benz driver must have eaten a sandwich at the line, and didn't want to spill his drink.

Stock GN times range from 13.7 to 14's depending upon car and driver. Modified GN fastest I've found 7.2 sec 1/4 mile. Fully modded and properly driven. So.......

So the correct answer is "it depends". Depends on how built each car is and how good the driver is in that car..

First thing I look for in a turbo car is a transbrake because you need to "spool it up" at the light.

So will a Merc smoke a GN ? "Insufficient data" but to play seriously these days you best be able to air the front wheels on launch.

Just got off the phone with him, here are the following modifications:

Exhaust
Headers
New throttlebody
Chip tune

Also, it has street tires. This is a sleeper type vehicle, not a track car. He drives on the streets.
Does that help my racing experts? It is a 86 type T.

Here is what Wikipedia has to say:

In 1986, a modified engine design with air-air intercooling boosted the performance even further to a specified 235HP @ 4000 rpm and 330 lb-ft torque at 2400 rpm. The Grand National (Quantity 5,512) and T-Types (Quantity 2,384) were both produced in 1986. For 1987, performance reached 245 hp (183 kW) and 355 lb·ft (481 N·m) of torque. Buick dropped the T-Type package for Regal in 1987 and opted for a "T" sport package instead. There were only 7,896 Turbo Regals produced in 1986. In 1987, when Turbo Regals reached their peak in popularity, a total of 27,590 Turbo Regals were produced through December, with those models produced between September and December of that year window stickered as "1987˝ Buick Grand National" vehicles.

He has an unfair edge with all those power adders. Furthermore, it is my belief that the T-type model also includes a positraction rear end. As I recall, these changes were what made these cars so fast at the strip.

Add headers, x-pipe, LSD, and ecu tune then closer to equal equip to him.

Place to ask is here. Strictly speaking those ae 3.8s. 3800s were FWD. The 89 Trans/AM with a turbo Buick V6 was the fastest T/A to date ( including the 73 SD455).

Just the parts you mention could be 300hp or could be 500 hp, have to know which TB, which Turbo, and which tune. AFAIR the weak part was the THM200 trans.

Remember a convention at Dennis Kirban's place and it looked like a row of government cars. I prefer a bit more style.

Since he's having it shipped in, does he even know if the GN is running well? There's very limited information ... but I'd take the GN in a race (and regardless, would prefer to take the SLK55 home or anywhere else).

Ugh, all the misinformation :P The Grand National is RWD and the same weight as a SLK55. The car is also very easy to launch, being an auto you just launch like a normal car but let it sit a bit longer to build some boost. The t-type is not a true grand national, but the only differences are really looks, it has the same 3.8l turbo engine and powertrain. If those are truly the only mods, then you should still take him if you can drive the car well, but it should be pretty close. It will be a fun one!

Race him a short distance like a stoplight to stoplight drag. Choose a location that has dusty or slick pavement. The Turbo-Grand Natl was easy to modify to make big power. But it only makes the car fast if you can hook it up. On the street more power with street tires and no burnout often results in just lots of wheel spin. Look at the vids of the guy outrunning the Hellcat with a stock C63.

Our cars hook well on the street and are supremely quick from 0-60 despite not really having that much HP. Do a short run, cut a good light and bust him and let off before he passes you, then ask him if he wants to race again, . If he says yes, tell him, "Nah, I already smoked your car. You been eliminate." Next.

I have seen the R171 with only 355 hp outrun a 430 hp Corvette convertible which is lighter as well. Just beware, turbo cars are not fair. They make power all over and perform way better than the numbers would suggest. If he can drive and you race a too long distance he likely will power past you on the big end even if you get the jump off the line. An 1/8th mile is the most you you attempt for a 1st pull, IMO.
