Encounter with Dodge Ram 4x4 Police

This event occurred while I was driving cross country in Mexico. Or maybe I was dreaming?? I was driving home in the Benz one day last week. I had the top down, enjoying the sunshine. I was on a four lane divided restricted access highway, similar to our US interstate routes. The posted limit was 70mph and traffic was running about 80ish. I have been having back pain while driving lately and stopped momentarily to stretch at one of the exits. I stood outside the car at the top of the on-ramp when two cute blond young ladies stopped to inquire if I was "OK?" Assuring them that I was, they proceeded down the ramp onto the highway. I climbed in, buckled up and accelerated down the ramp to the merge. There were several large 18 wheelers coming and I matted the AMG to merge ahead of all but the lead truck. When I merged I was hitting triple D's and quickly slowed to more or less match traffic and then signaled to move to the left lane and passed the big truck. I ran along running slightly above average speeds for a few miles, slowing when behind a rolling roadblock and then accelerating quickly back to desired velocity again when the road was clear. I stay in the right lane except when passing and have a low opinion of those who like to camp out in the passing lane (You know who you are [email protected]#$% )

I soon passed the young ladies in the Jeep and smiled and waved at them for having the care and concern to check on me earlier. I ran along for about 20 miles or so, and was climbing a long incline and had by then slowed to about average speed with traffic. I was in the slow lane with cruise set. Looking to my rear, about 1/2 mile back was a large Dodge Ram 4x4 painted flat black. No insignia and large mudder type tires. It looked as it got closer like a refugee from a Mad Max movie. When I spotted it, I noticed that it had a blue light on top of the cab and was going at a high rate of speed (for a pickup). Hmmm, I wondered who is that police officer after? Well he zoomed up behind me and pulled me to the side.

I stopped at a safe spot near a truck weigh station. Out popped a disgruntled looking captain dressed in all black swat gear. He was a Fish & Wildlife officer but they have same jurisdiction as any cop in this location and he was not happy. He blurted out and asked me "How fast were you going?" Not wanting to be too self incriminating, I replied, "Too fast?". He responded, "You are [email protected]#$ right you were too fast. I have been in hot pursuit of you since you merged into traffic at the last exit." Now, with the exception of my boisterous trip down the merge ramp, I had been cruising at a mostly moderate pace, albeit faster than generally acceptable. I had to stifle a laugh and nearly choked on it. He never asked for license or id or registration. And proceeded to read me the riot act more or less and then said, "Have a nice day Sir!"

It occurred to me a little later that my radar detector had been chirping off and on but never did indicate a lock or strong signal. His radar had been effectively masked by the three large 18 wheelers when I merged into traffic and the officer had never gotten a clear shot at me with the radar after that due to the traffic between us. He had observed my felonious trip down the ramp but I had not seen him since he was behind one of the trucks and he could only guesstimate my speed. He was a bit frustrated. Then before leaving he asked if I would tail him about 5 miles to the next town because his truck had overheated going flat out for 20 miles. He was worried that it might pop a cork. I agreed sheepishly. My Spanish is not too good, but I was happy to not be in the hoosegow. Hooo Boy. Close Encounters of the Felonious Kind...

Moral of this story? Don't slow down, you never know who may be in hot pursuit behind you?... I dunno.

Cool

How does a 'Fish and Wildlife Officer' have jurisdiction on a highway? Sounds mighty fishy to me. I might get it if you were in a speedboat but an SLK or were you in one of these?

That is funny. At least in some places the Fish & Wildlife officers have the same law enforcement authority as the state highway police officers. Not really a kill JB in the classic sense as I did not know he was there most of the time. Unless you count that he ran the 4x4 into the ground? At least he was civil about it. I really almost did not stop since the darn truck did not look official from the front at all. Very menacing looking. From the sides it did have insignia but they were not visible from my angle of view.

If it will make the group feel better, I did race our County Sherriff in a heads up 1/8mi drag race in his Dodge Hemi Charger PoPo car. I busted him pretty badly. Something like 9/10ths of a sec if I recall. But I was in my old C32 AMG at the time. Still the SLK is marginally quicker than the C32. Chalk up another Dodge pelt on the wall.
