Pch?

My wife and I are thinking of driving the Pacific Coast Hwy this summer.

How long should we take and what shouldn't we miss? We'd like to visit our son in San Diego.

Were do you plan to get on the PCH / 101 / 1? I think the Redwoods are a must see in northern CA. Hard to say how much time is needed. If you stop to do things like taking a Jet Boat Ride in Southern OR. that would add a day in it self.

You may want to start going south on the PCH from the San Francisco area to San Diego. It may take you extra time to get to San Diego and lots of good views, rustic beach towns and twisties on the PCH between SF and Santa Barbara.

Thanks! I don't want to miss the Redwoods and my wife has never seen Hurst Castle. We'll probably jump on in S. Oregon.

We drove Dana Point to San Diego and had a great time at my son's wedding. We're looking forward to it!

Hearst is AWESOME. And then there are the sea lions near San Simeon. The last time we did Santa Barbara to Carmel via Hearst in 1 day, depending where you start, it can easily be split into 2 with time allotted for wine tasting (and sobering up)

Hearst Castle is a great stop however.. there are several "tours" in the castle. You won't see ALL of it at once. Either plan on spending some time there, or pick your tour.

Along the coast, you'll come to many little "artsy" towns. Carmel, Big Sur, Moro Bay, Pismo Beach... and there's a great deal of things to see in each. Top points (imo)
Carmel = 17 mile drive. It's called just that and it's on the fwy signs.
Big Sur = Just below Big Sur is Nepenthe Restaurant. Breath taking views from the patio along with an afternoon cocktail.
Moro Bay = Ya have to stop and see the Sea Lions!
Pismo Beach = OMG the best Clam Chowder EVER! Splash Cafe, corner of Pomeroy (main drag to the pier) and Cypress. You'll know it when you get there 'cause there's a line around the corner.

BTW.. once you get past Santa Monica, you'll be on the fwy. You can dart back to the coast for a while on Vista Del Mar. Map it, you'll see.
Have a GREAT trip. I've seen most of it and still get excited to drive it. Can't wait to do it in the SLK.

Yes, don't miss 17 Mile Drive, Monterrey, Carmel and Hearst. Be careful to PLAN for Hearst, as the tours are on a fixed schedule and they tend to close early. Dana Point and Santa Barbara are nice overnight stops. We usually stay at Bacara outside Santa Barbara and the Ritz Lag una / Dana. Play Monarch Beach at Dana if you golf...beautiful. Enjoy!!

The site won't let me say La***a because it has a common name for a firearm in the middle. Really?

It's not a problem - there are certain words which are removed - this is because webbots and spiders latch onto them, and then we get re-directions from inappropriate sources. SLKWorld is fairly unique amongst automotive forums for it's lack of bad language, innuendo and general camaraderie. We (the Admins and Mods) hope it will remain that way. Although firearms may be generally accepted in the US, in many other parts of the world, they are not.

I did the PCH between LA and SF 3 times, it's always a blast.

Obligatory stop: Julia Pfeiffer Burns state park!

I also invite you to check the California section in the forum, we usually plan meet and drives, and if you're in the area maybe you could join us? :-)

Have a great trip!

Not a problem. I've had several boards throughout the years and understand totally.

Again, "thanks all" for all the great suggestions! We're really looking forward to our trip.

One thing has us thinking though, how do we pack and still have room for topless driving????

It's possible. Here are the trunk shots for our PCH trip in 2007. My golf clubs are in there, but the driver is wedged behind the passenger seat. We put some clothes in large ZipLock bags and compressed the air out of them to save space. It was tight, but doable. Leather bags helped as they were pliable in the trunk.

Also, here are a few shots from that trip. https://www.slkworld.com/general-disc...adventure.html
