Question Question- Headlight DRL setting options for canada spec 2005 SLK350 R171

Questions for any of you knowledgeable folks here- I have a USA 05 SLK 350 that is Canada spec. the headlights are always on even when the headlight switch is in the 0 (off) position. I do not have an option in my cluster menu to change the DRL mode from 'auto' to 'manual'.

1. I need a dealer or someone with DAS/STAR to change this correct?
2. Can the auto/manual setting option be enabled in the cluster?
3. How do the DRL's work in "manual" mode? Do they come on in daytime only when the headlight switch is set to 'auto'?

TIA-

From a Canuck: when the engine is running: the DRL's are ALWAYS on when the headlights are OFF. Once you turn the headlights on (or the auto switches them on), DRL's go off (they are the hi beams running on less juice).

Thanks but it does not work that way on the Canada spec R171 with halogen projectors. The low beam projectors are the "DRL" and are always on.

What year / model R171 do you have that works in the manner you are describing?

Not yet - eventually. I have one on my 911s cab and love it. My questions are in regards to DAS/STAR settings and auto vs manual DRL operation

Afaik:
1. Yes
2. Depending on the "country setting" the option gets enabled in the cluster. In countries where DRL's are mandatory it's disabled, in other countries it's enabled. Setting your car to US specs should enable it.
3. With DRL on manual the lights only come on when when you turn the light switch to postion 5 (parking lights) or 6 (low/high beam headlights). Taillamps and license plate lamps come on too. Just as if you drive at night and turn on the lights manually. At least that how it works on my (European,Dutch specs) car. I think every year/model R171 works that way.

Sorry, was referring to my Magnum (as I'm having connection problems with them and trying to resolve). Should have been
clearer .

Thank you for this- I had the dealer change the vehicle country to USA. But I cannot find an access menu in the cluster to change the setting, which I understand should be available. did the dealer miss something?

You're not getting this first option in the lighting submenu?

Afaik this option should now appear if the variant code was set to USA.
But I'm not a DAS/STAR guy, maybe one of them can jump in.
Possible the instrument cluster needs a reset first.
But your dealer really should know this....

Thanks- No menu item like that unfortunately- I had printed that out from the '05 owner's manual and showed it to the master tech at Mercedes dealership, I asked why I do not have the "headlamp mode" setting if the vehicle country was set to USA.. He told me "it is not possible to change options on a Canada car - there is no way to change the headlight function or add new menus. Canada cars are completely different from USA cars"

I am not sure if I believe this, but, that is what I was told. How do I reset the instrument cluster?

Can't comment on what the master tech said, he's far more knowledgeable than me and I have zero experience with USA/Canada specs cars (I'm from Europe..), but there are certain sub-menus in the settings menu that are dependent of the variant code of the car. I assumed that this was one of them. Would make sense as this is the easiest way for MB to implement this requirement of the Canadian road authorities. But I've been wrong before,so who knows...
I believe that resetting the instrument cluster is performed with STAR.

Yeh it is hard to find a definitive answer on this- My VIN decodes the vehicle as a North America model, and comes with a combo "US/Canada" manual. the radio A20 is a US radio. I cannot find any "Canada specific" model of SLK R171, from what I can find there is only one North America model - and that would make sense on the headlamp mode setting being available to variant = USA but hidden for variant = Canada

Do you often need to reset the instrument cluster to see menu changes after the country variant has been altered? I'm just trying to get some concrete facts on this. I don't think the mater tech at my local MB is knowledgeable on this topic.

There is a control module reset that is possible using Star. It is accessed by going to > Control Modules > Instrument Cluster (IC) > Actuations > Control Module Reset. Not sure this will resolve your issue. Also, all the functions that can be changed through the IC can been seen and changed within Star and they are tied to the three memory settings on the electric seat settings.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that - I spoke with Mercedes Canada main customer service today, they are going to check if the Headlamp Mode IC menu does become enabled when switching the country variant to USA. If they get back to me it may help provide a definitive answer.

BTW- I did find out that my SLK is a Canada car and my VIN shows in their computer as having a "C" designation code, for Canada market. So I guess there is a difference between US and Canada vehicles even though it does not show up in any VIN decoder or line card.

Going from USA to Canada is apparentlt easy, but I guess not so much the other way round...

Going from USA to Canada is apparently easy in ref to enabling DRL, but I guess not so much the other way round as far as being able to shut it off...

I read in this post that a dealer can set the car to "rest of world" and that may shut off the DRL low beams, or at least enable the Headlamp Mode settings in the IC?
https://www.slkworld.com/181041-post59.html

Or SmartTop can be used to shut off DRL low beams?

Info: Disable and Shut off the Forced Canada DRL Headlights on SLK 350 R171 using STAR / DAS. Yes it can be done!!

Update! I have SUCCESS with shutting off the permanent DRL low beams on a Canada spec R171 SLK. I had the dealer look at it again, and try both "USA and "Rest of World", save, then do a control module reset. They could see the Headlamp Mode setting now in SDS in the IC, but, that same menu would not show up in the actual IC from the car view. I had them change the headlamp mode from "Constant" to "Manual" in the SDS view of IC, and boom! no more permanent low beams!!!

So now you all know- Disabling daytime running light headlights can be done on Canada R171 SLK 350 imported to USA, via STAR/DAS. Just be advised you will not see the actual setting in your IC menus in the vehicle. Maybe a US version IC is needed to be able to see that menu. Thank you Sneaky Pete and mchild for your support and suggestions.

Here are the step for anyone else:

Quote:
Disable Forced Daytime Headlights DRL on Canada spec Mercedes SLK 350 R171

Using STAR/DAS, set the country variant from Canada to "Rest of World" or "USA". One of those (try both variants) should enable the "Headlamp Mode" menu in the SDS version of the IC under "Lighting". The low beams can be set to 'manual' instead of constant and headlights will work as described in the US version of the owner manual.

The instrument cluster will need to be reset for this change to take place, and that's done as follows..
From the above variant change, save the changes and F1 back to the main INSTRUMENT CLUSTER menu
Go to ACTUATIONS ---> CONTROL MODULE RESET

F3 to reset the cluster, F3 to ok the process and click OK once complete.
F2 back to the ACTUATIONS menu, and then F1 to go back all the way to CONTROL UNIT GROUPS.
The IC will perform a reset, the clock will reset it'self and then switch the ignition off, then back on again.

New IC menus associated with variant should be present in SDS version of IC. the setting will not be visible in the vehicle IC display. I can only guess that a US-spec IC is needed to be able to see that menu in the vehicle. Note that you must use a STAR/DAS to change the setting back to 'Constant' if desired.

LOL! Yeh it was the same master tech, so he now considers himself "updated". I guess to be fair they have not done any country variant changes before and the process was not working out as expected. They were nice enough to keep trying at it per my insistence and did not charge me anything. Strange that the headlamp mode menu would show up in the SDS version of the IC, but not in the vehicle.
