Instrument cluster language settings

Hello all,

I am wondering if STAR coding can be used to adjust the language settings of the main instrument cluster in my SLK 171.

It's a Japanese market LHD car built in 2005 and the current language options comprise English and Japanese. It would be great if that could be switched to European settings so you could choose English, German, French etc. just like on a European car.

Many thanks,

In principal: Yes. But a LHD Japanese car? That's quite an exotic. You'll just have to try with someone who has access. Mind you, the language MAY be connected to other settings. E.g. RHD drive would automatically make the mirrors blind on the right side and dip on the left side.

LHD is common in Japan for luxury vehicles, especially old Mercedes and air cooled Porsches will likely be 70-80% LHD.

My 171 is a LHD model with the same instrument cluster as a European car. Given MB only distinguish between km/h and mp/h instrument clusters (as per the parts catalogue) I thought that the European version settings might slumber somewhere inside the cluster and could be activated via STAR.

With regard to the mirrors, are you referring to the passenger side mirror tilting down when you engage reverse?
And the driver side mirror reacting to the light of overtaking traffic?
Haven't checked that out yet to be honest.

Yes. These consequences are tied to choosing LHD/RHD in STAR, not to language. But since some of the options in STAR have consequences for other options, I thought it worth mentioning. The language setting is in there twice if I remember correctly (it has been a while since I had a R171 on my STAR ) and I can't remember exactly why. One is for the speedo/rpm unit. Maybe the other one was for the NTG2.5.

Ok, thanks.

So regarding the cluster there should be a STAR option to choose the "region" for the cluster?

Regarding the mirrors I think I read something that the electronics are present in both mirrors - meaning the tilting on reversing should be programmable in STAR (I hope).
And for the dimming I think that is related to the glass of the mirror -> need to get a LHD dimming glass from a LHD option code 249 car.

You change the region of the car, not the cluster, and it's in the Central Gateway - National Version

The software controls the door mirros reverse position in each door controller, and can be changed to suit

.. and yes, you'll need a dimming mirror glas for that side too!! (and they're not too cheap either!!), but you should have the wiring in BOTH mirrors for the auto dim function

Cheers

Spot on, many thanks Sean!

Can get the glass used for about 70 GBP, sounds decent enough for me. What do you think?
