Calgary - Lone Star

I took my newly acquired 2006 SLK to the dealer for an oil change and a transmission flush. When I meet the “advisor” she stated it was due for a schedule “B” and stated MB recommended a transmission service at 60K in any case. She stated they would not reset the maintenance date unless I had the “B” service. I had no problem with the full “B” and asked that the transmission be completely flushed. They phoned later and asked for another day as the oil filter housing was cracked and they did not have one in stock. When I picked up the next day there was a ”minor maintenance” done according to the invoice and only 5 liters of transmission fluid charged (complete fluid change takes 9 L). I found someone to question why I didn’t get a complete flush including the torque converter and they advised me that they only drain the pan and change filters. Cost $845 ($140/hr) for the service, less than I was anticipating but less service than I was anticipating. I am not sure if I will go back. They also did not comment on my broken fog light which makes me wonder how complete a “B” is.

Jeff, he's talking kilometers, you're talking miles. 60k kliks is just over 35k miles.

I agree with your recommendation though. Can we have some of our other Calgary area members chip in with a recommendation for another dealer or good indy (as I assume the car is out of warranty).

I have watching the posts and not many posting from the Calgary recently. There is another dealer and few independents that state they work on MB. What Lone Star did I could have easily done myself (if it was so cold in my garage) but as I had no previous service records I was interested in what they might find that I had not identified. I was originally sorry I did not take in for a dealer check before I purchased it but it would appear that it would not have made a difference.

Did they fix it? I would have insisted they do it right and if not then get into it with CAC in Toronto. This just ain't right.

Calgary dealerships

I've brought my vehicle in for repairs at the Hyatt MB dealership in downtown. Selected them because they were much more efficient and thorough in their email reply.

Overall they were pretty good and I was quite impressed.

Honestly the service of a place is only as good as the individual handling your case. Can't remember the guy's name but turns out he was the service manager and he was exceptional.

I've brought my vehicle in twice. The first was to repair an issue with the passenger window not working and therefore causing the top not to operate. Initially I was quoted over $1500 to fix (replacing the motor, module, and labor at Lonestar) and was prepared to do the same at Hyatt. Parts had to be ordered in from Germany which took a week or so. Brought it in the morning and by the same afternoon I was told to pick up the vehicle. Got there, ready to pay the quoted amount, and they told me just $700. They said they tested it and the motor was the faulty piece - which was replaced. The module was fine so they placed the new piece back on shelf. I was very impressed because they were so honest about this... if they charge me the full $1500 I would have paid too - I would not have known.

The 2nd time I was there was because I wanted to get a new set of tires via my friend, but I could not locate the wheel locking key - so I was ready to pay the dealership to shred it off and pick up a new locking set. They looked and looked and found it hidden under my spare tire. Kudos to them for discovering it.

Talked to my aunt and they had an average experience with Hyatt though - but can't remember what it was about.

I would still bring it back to Hyatt if there is something I can't fix it myself.

Brutal. I generally avoid dealerships like the plague, as I have traditionally been overcharged.

I have a mechanical background and generally to all my work myself, unless I have an issue which is covered by full warranty. I find that independent specialized shops generally will serve you well, and have found a great BMW mechanic in Edmonton. I have not yet found a good Mercedes Benz shop but would welcome any suggestions.

I took mine to Hyatt yesterday. I had a transmission pan gasket leak and asked them to replace the seal. They did a transmission service which included the filter, oil, plug gasket and 6 new pan bolts. Grand total with tax was $485.70. Service was great. Shuttle driver was even friendly. When I went to pick it up the tires were dirty and they wanted to wash it. When I declined and they gave me 2 free car detailing rain checks. I'll probably never use them because I keep it pretty spotless. If anybody in the Calgary area wants them, they're yours.
