Importing an SLK to Canada

I'm still shopping around. The Canadian dollar is still very strong and prices in the US are attractive. The big question is how to jump through all the bureaucratic hoops, and how much will it cost, and what if anything needs to be done to the car.

Feel free to add links and posts if you've got some experience in importing, or sources (dealers, websites) for a good SLK.

https://www.slkworld.com/general-disc...canada-us.html

http://www.riv.ca/

http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/servic...owners_manuals

http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/servic...enance_manuals

Best sources for ads so far, other than ebay, is cars.com and carsforsale.com

How many ex-pat SLKs are on here now?

I just recently sold a motorcycle to a Canadian resident, I can't tell you about the fees and such as I wasn't on that end but I can tell you what I know about the process.

Two weeks before you can bring your purchase across the border you have to fax a copy of a bill of sale and the title to the border customs office. When the two weeks has past you can bring it to the border. You must have in your possession the original title if there is a lien on the title you must have the lien release card as well as the bill of sale.

Give a call to the border crossing that you will bring it across and they can give you all the details. It was pretty easy for the purchaser of my motorcycle.

Hope that helps

A few members on www.PureMB.com know all about the importing process.

There should also be a few threads about this very subject.

you basically just have to buy the car from the usa. At the boarder you have to pay 7.1% (or something very close to that) of the purchase price and an additional 5% GST (Even though there is only HST now you still have to pay 5% GST at the boarder). RIV will charge approx $300.00 and Canadian Tire charges approx. $200. You DO NOT have to take it to Mercedes to get checked out. They will give you a billl for $3000 + ( you only need to go to them if you want to switch your warrenty from US to Canadian. Once canadain tire passes the RIV inspection then you go to the ministry of transportation and register it which you will have to pay the other 8% (PST). If you have a business of course, you get to write off the 5% you paid at the boarder. I hope this helps...its sounds like a lot but it is very easy and smart you will sve at least $10,000.00 I wish I did it!

humm...very good to know, thanks a lot. I had heard something about having to convert a bunch of stuff over to Canadian spec; daytime running lights, instrument cluster, french labels, etc.....Is that not true? or is it only optional? If it's really as easy as you say it is I will definitely expand my search into the U.S

I helped a friend of mine bring an slk to canada from the states and that is why i know the process. The conversion of the instrument cluster is a money grabber from mercedes. The dash has an option to view everything in km so Candian Tire (they are the only authorized inspection shop by RIV) will pass it. There is also an option on the slk's to keep the daytime lights on all the time. As i said before. You only have to get it checked out by mercedes if you want to transfer the warrenty. It costs $3000.00 so you have to see if its worth it for you. They replace the enitre dash (no needed at all) and add they other crap. If you bring it to the canadian tire in scarborough area (Port Union) I know a guy who works there and can help you pass everything without a problem.

Also Flieger here is a new twist did you take a look to bring a car back from Germany to Kanada or maybe from Mexico or even Brazil? I never imported a car to Canada but i sold several old Heckflossen to Germany Mexico South Africa and even the Middle East. I know not the same game but all my buyers used a company to do the leg work and deal with all the paperwork. It made it easier. Since Germany and Kanada have almost the same safety regs. try to find a company that will take of all that stuff. Yes it might will add on $$$$ to your Slk but not to have the headache priceless. Send me a Pm i will talk to some of my Canada friends from the Heckflossen Club and see if i can get some info 4 you. Cheers Daniel in Phx

Yeah, there is some excellent companies that can help handle everything....My dad brought an old Ferrari up from the states last year and he used a company. They did an excellent job, but being an older car, he didn't have to jump through any safety hoops to get it registered.

I did confirm what Deeps03 said about Canadian Tire....I should know this, cuz I work for them, but I don't, . So I went to my local store and spoke to the service manager....He told me they're only really concerned with DRL's and the child safety restraint. Then he said the child safety restraint might not even apply to SLK's...so it's only really the DRL's.

I am not sure if the R170's I am looking at have the DRL option that Deeps03 mentioned, but even if they don't i am sure I can install a daytime running light kit pretty easily?

The daytime running lights are a fairly easy install. The only problem is that you have to cut your factory wiring to hook it up. It is something that you may have to do for the r170 model. I personally would not spend the extra money on hiring a broker to bring the car over for you. If you need any assistance, I would be more than willing to help/guide you along the way. I have done it many times.

I have a 2007 USA and the daylight running lights can be turned on or off by using the Control System. See page 143 in owners manual. (see below)
Controls in detail
Control system
Lighting submenu

Access the Lighting submenu via the Settings... menu. Use the Lighting submenu to change the lamp and lighting settings on your vehicle.

Setting daytime running lamp mode (USA only)

Move the selection marker with button + or - , to the Lighting submenu.

Press button + or - repeatedly until the message Headlamp mode appears in the multifunction display.
The selection marker is on the current setting.
Press button up or down to select manual operation (Manual) or daytime running lamp mode (Constant),

With daytime running lamp mode activated and the exterior lamp switch at position O or AUTO,the low beamheadlamps are switched on when the engine is running.
In low ambient light conditions the followinglamps will switch on additionally:

Parking lamps

Tail lamps

License plate lamps

Side marker lamps

For more information on the daytime running
lamp mode, see “Lighting” (page 109).

This function is not available in countries where the daytime running lamp mode is andatory and therefore in a constant mode. or safety reasons, resetting all the functions of all submenus to the factory settings while driving (page 136) will not deactivate the daytime running lamp mode.

The following message appears in the multifunction display:
Lighting Cannot be completely reset to factory settings while driving

Has anyone used the COMMAND system on the 171 to switch the system to "Kanada"? This apparently will also have the analogue dial display your speed in km/h (though that guage max's out at 160..)

Was doing some research as to how to get the car up here. For the brave of heart, UHaul will rent you a cube van (for some reason they won't rent out their pickups for A to B towing) and a trailer capable of carrying an SLK. Looked elsewhere for a pickup, Enterprise has them, but they aren't configured for towing. The UHaul trailer is quite reasonably priced IMHO.

Anyone used a good transporter company?

I'll post a great doc sent to me by a friend...contains a link to a import site. The problem with driving it home is that you need plates...or a "drive out" permit. Some states, including Mass don't even have such a thing. Tried to get an Ontario Special Permit, but it's a catch 22 - it has to be registered in Ontario, even though there is a section that describes it being used for transfers THROUGH Ontario! In short, the state/province is motivated to take your money via sales tax.

PS anyone just put a down payment on an 07 350 in Paterson NJ?
