Rentech Upgrade

Has anyone had a RennTech upgrade done to their AMG?

I have an SL63 AMG and the dealership offered me a Renntech upgrade for about $14,000. This includes some chassis mods, headers, new exhaust, computer chip, etc.

They claim it will boost the HP from the current 518 to about 545. This doesn't seem to be that significant. The AMG guy told me the number one limiting factor, besides the chip, is the exhaust manifold. He says new headers provide most of the HP by reducing the constricted exhaust flow.

I have topped the car out at 160mph. {computer limited to 155mph). They say the upgrade changes this to 184mph or even unlimited with a different chip.

Is it worth it?

It sure was fun driving 160mph. I think 184mph would be fun too. We have a lot of open highway with few vehicles on them in Kentucky!

Lots of room to fly on nice new highways free from potholes.

Well if you want my opinion Id go for Kleemann, When looking at the C63 AMG modifications Kleemann offers the same horsepower gain for a little less.

Basically your looking at headers,ecu,rear catalytic's and downpipes if I am not mistaken, add with them a drop in filters you will be getting 545hp.

New 63-K2 kit for the 63 AMG engine.

"The Kleemann 63-K2 kit for the AMG 63 engines consists of a set of high flow manifolds with down pipes and sports catalysts combined with a totally remapped engine ECU.

The high flow manifolds are made from high quality stainless steel (304) and are precision crafted in order to obtain the lowest possible back pressure. This allows the engine to breathe freely and thereby produce more power. The manifolds feature a 28 mm. diameter increase on both primary tubes as well as on the down pipes, compared to the dimensions of the standard pipes. The result is an optimized exhaust gas flow all the way out to the 200 cell metal sport catalytic converters. The system fits perfectly with both OE exhaust systems as well as Kleemann sports exhaust systems. Fitted to an OE exhaust, the system adds a crisp note to the already fabulous sound of the AMG exhaust.

The refined ignition and fuel mapping in the ECU is fine tuned and programmed to match the optimized gas flow characteristics of the Kleemann manifolds, providing the highest possible performance.

Any AMG 63 car fitted with the Kleemann 63-K2 upgrade gets up to 545 HP peak and 675 Nm of maximum torque, but just as important, the engine gets a smoother power delivery all over the power band, providing the driver with inspiring and unmatched driving pleasure."

Thanks Alroumi, I appreciate the reply, research and data. I can't recall if the "2nd" option they offered was a Kleeman, but the AMG tech at my dealership told me he would go for the RennTech.

I am still left with that basic question, is it worth it. By that I mean, time without the car, having it ripped apart, cost and reward. In other words, will I even see the difference in performance.

AGain, my dealership's AMG tech told me if it were him, he would wait until I had the car for 6 months or so and then purchase the upgrade. He said that way, I would be more apt to feel the difference. HE claimed many people get it done right off the show room floor nad never really know what they purchased.

The money isn't really as much of an issue as having a new car taken apart and put back together again. I realized these guys are trained in Germany, at least my tech claims so, but it's downright scary with a $140K vehicle.

Of course my wife simply says, Why do you need to go 184mph, isn't 160mph fast enough! LOL...women never understand. At least she understood well enough to send me to Skip Barber Racing school for my birthday! Laguna Seca rocks!

Anyway, I sure would like to get some feedback from someone who has done this, with any AMG vehicle.

You might seem to appreciate it more when you break in your car drive it more and even save up more money, how about this you know that the weather is getting colder and you might not able to drive the car for a while in winter. Get whatever the upgrade you want in late april by then you've got a reason to strengthen the upgrade to the wife as you've put it into consideration.

Fascinating videos. The second video is close to what it sounded like Friday night when I had had it to 155mph/249kmh. There is a bit of difference in the sound.

The first video produced a bit more of a low level growl than what I hear from mine. THis must be do to the larger manifold, sort of like an instrument, the larger holes produce a deeper sound.

The money is burning a whole in my pocket as I type....

BTW, what dealership are you at?

Many dealerships have an AMG "tech"...basically a sales Rep for the tuners out there...they will recommend whichever product they can make more on.

AMG has yet to release specifically trained AMG techs that can make recommendations for aftermarked performance add-ons.

The dealership is Mercedes Benz of Nashville, and the AMG Tech says he went to Germany to the AMG plant for training. He's their lead mechanic, not a sales rep. I don't think he is lying about it.

What cyber means Dave is the tech will say go for this product or this product, not an actual sales rep but somebody who tries to make a sale.

No tech is told by AMG to recommend aftermarket products so he will be pushing on behalf of his employer (the dealer), in my own personal view i would probably invest in the headers and having the car de-restricted, that should be more than enough.

The 63's hardly lacking in the first place.
