Transmission Fluid

Hi All,

As some of you know i have a SLK 55 AMG 2005, it's currently at 46,000 miles and i know the trans. fluid should be changed at the 40k mark.

I was wondering at what miles you guys changed yours and how much it cost?

I'm going to book mine in next week - main dailer job only i think.

Thanks all.!

Typical British Stealer - take the Dollar figure, add some to it and then stick a in front of it

Well, just to update everyone - had the trans fluid done at dealer - cost 311 with a free car wash Have noticed the gear changes in 1st and second are much smoother, no noticeable jerk as it were!

Thumbs up

Just had mine done at 40k miles in Weston Super Mare Mercedes. They matched an Indy quote of 273. So about the same as yours allowing for London prices? I too have noticed smoother gear changes in first and second, well worth doing

Mind you, I did the reset of the gearbox learning, and managed to get the first and second changes to be much smoother.
Net cost; zilch.
Net time; 15 seconds!

Not to say I shouldn't do the oil change, but I bet they will have done the reset so that even a fluids change is seen to have a significant effect.

48,000 miles but INDY said that he adjusted level at 93 F or 34C (instead of 108.5 F or 42.5 C). so it likely have an overfill of ATF. What are the ill effects of a slight overfill (maybe 1/2 to 3/4 inch overfill) ? Will this be within the fill tolerance?

My mpg when down but I don't know if it's due the the short trips or overfilled transmission.
It could be my imagination but the initial Park to reverse seems to be a fraction of a second delayed when now (ambient temp is 75 .

Eddy are you really planning to move from So Cal?

Cannot comment on any "overfill" ATF effects.

I was just kidding about moving to Simi Valley. I will be going to the indy when it's time for the second ATF change.

Try the automatic transmission adaptation reset procedure and see if the tranny shift behavior changes.

Do you guys notice an occasional 'clonky' downshift, when slowing to a stop from speed, say like when coming off a motorway/freeway ramp to a traffic light? It's something I notice about one time in four.

Not when the tranny fluid is warm or at operating temperature.

transmission

if you mean downshifting into first, then yes - i notice it too, like a slight jerk, and my trans fluid has just been changed at MB.

I guess it's a characteristic of the car. I have got used to changing driving mode into comfort when i'm in traffic as the car starts from 2nd gear - much smoother!

Yes, just occasionally when coming to a stop from high speed, the last downshift before the car comes to a rest feels like a little 'lurch'.

I didn't realise it starts from 2nd in comfort mode. Sure feels like it starts from first...

I was driving my 300SE yesterday - that feels like it starts in top!

Looks like a range for dealer routine ATF maintenance service--$279 to $566.

Silverinca at $566 US or 354 pounds look like a high with unknown level of ATF change.

Eddy $400 for pan fluid change (5 Qt)

Jbanks15 $300 with a flush looks like a complete job and great value.

CA SLK55 $279 looks like the dealer low price. (What dealer was at that price and how was the service on other repairs?)

After looking at the work order my memory is coming back....the trans was serviced just after I bought the car from Silver Star MB in Thousand Oaks. This was after they said "all services within 3K miles were done"....well that wasn't true as the trans is due at 40K and it had 37.8K when I bought it. I also found that a previous service indicated that the spark plug service was also performed when they took it in on trade.....which wasn't the case, but the work order said it had. So after a "spirited" conversation with the sales manager, the service manager, then the owner the "deal" was done. They would do the trans at cost, and due the plugs for free.

So there you have it....$279 is cost (which is BS), but far less expensive than $600 for plugs.

Did Silver Star MB note how many Qt or Liters of ATF were used? The MB cost many be 50% of retail plus 2 hours of tech. time (full labor charge?).

$600 for spark plugs at 30,000. I expect that the real life and actual change period are much longer.

BTW CA SLK55: How did you know that they did not change the plugs are noted on the prior work order?

I'll have to look at the work order to see how many quarts they put in...

What tipped me off on the plugs is that they stated that they performed all maintenance needed within 3k which should have been the trans plus a Service C. The paperwork said that they did a "12" service (plugs) and the other numbers for a Service C and when I asked why the trans wasn't done but the plugs which aren't due until 50k was, it all came out that they did do either and they need to do what the paperwork said they did (plugs) plus the trans which was within 3k of the required miles.

Just stick to your ****...when they say and show things they say they did, it has an affect on the price I was willing to pay...so they did a good job of cornering themselves. I could have had both services done for free, but that was a bit too far.
