AMG Engines & "Phasing Out"

I'm not as clued up on AMG engines as i am on the M division but its never too late to learn.

I've read that the current SLK55 AMG uses the Naturally aspirated M113 5.4litre while models like the SL use the supercharged one. I've got to ask besides having one serious monster on our hands, why didn't AMG use the supercharged version in the SLK55?

Also i've read on various sites that AMG have planned to phase out their the M113 engine (which they have done in some part) and are now using the M156 engine. Now why have they done this but not completely? I'm assuming they've kept the SLK 55 for certain reasons (maybe until the R172 where the M156 will replace the current 113?)

In my opinion it doesnt really make sense. Surely if they're wanting to move forward they would have used an alternative for the 55?

Any thoughts / opinions?

They are using the NA version of the M113 so that the SLK doesnt outgun the SL, the SLK55 in stock 0-60 runs is quiet capable of catching or staying close to a SL55.

Its all money at the end of they day isn't it, yes both models do aim at slightly different markets but creating a SLK6X-55S/C would give buyers the chance to get a hold of a car that will eat its twice as expensive older brother for breakfast.

Now think about the people who buy these cars and you will find they fit into 2 groups, the ones who intend to drive them like they where built to be driven and the ones who intend to quote the BHP and 0-60 figures but never have any intention of using it, only one of these 2 groups are worthy of owning the cars but unfortunately both groups exist and both can be satisfied by the introduction of a faster SLK -

The proper drivers will like the fact that the smaller, slighter, more nimble SLK has more/equal power output than the bigger, heavier, more bus like SL and will buy the SLK.

The figure quoter's will be able to quote more BHP and less 0-60 times for the cheaper SLK and no longer have any justification to shell out all the extra cash for the SL.

This applies only to the AMG models since the non-AMG models have more buyer groups who are un-effected by engine choice.

Now onto your engine life question's -

A flat cut or a forklift as we call it is very hard to do and this is the same for many different things if you have never been involved in an IT system rollout for example you will know its very hard to simply shutdown the business at night on system X and expect it to wakeup and function in the morning on system Y, it is much easier and safer to do a phased migration giving the staff enough time to adjust and for any kinks to be worked out, of course the kinks and adjustment time doesn't apply to AMG because they will have totally tested the engine before it ever enters a chassis design but the phasing process does since modifying all existing models to accommodate a new engine is considerably more expensive than keeping a current engine in production, they are simply performing the migration as new models are rolled out and now it is only the SLK and perhaps the G? that use the M113 engine.

The R171 SLK would have been in development before they were in a situation to deploy any of the new engine designs so the 113 was used, plus this would have been pre SL update and it would have put the SLK above the SL in the power standings for a large period of time.

When R172 comes out it will almost certainly use a new engine unless the 55's selling power remains so strong that MB chose not to squeeze the bigger models and keep the SLK on the 113, that certainly would not be the end of the world since the 113 is an old engine but it is very modifiable, very reliable and more than capable of holding its head above the water in the current engine environment BUT the money says expect a new engine in 172.

I know this is a long post but i figured it was better to type exactly what my head was thinking so it was clear instead of trying to compress it down and missing facts.

Lets face it Mercedes is in the business of selling cars and that they do a lot of research as to prospect buyer's of all there models and as Dan said if they get the performance of them to close that people who are performance ( track, autoX and drag ) minded would buy the SLK AMG over any SL model.
They have came out with the SL63 AMG which will out perform the SL55 AMG ( and in my opinion will give the current SLK55 AMG a run for its money ) now they can come out with an SLKXXX AMG that will be more powerful and faster than the SLK55 AMG.
I have no idea what they will do but I think the new/old 550 engine (AMG modified to 400 hp and equivalent torque) mated to the new 7MCT trans would be a good combination fo the SLKXXX AMG they could use more carbon fiber to lighten it up and it would be a beast.
That is all on the performance end they will still have to build cars for the category 2 drivers which is the biggest market --- and they will have to make changes in them also to keep the people who have to have the latest and greatest and to heck with the money. They have already made some changer's to the nav ,CD changers, and phone interface's and these will all trickle down. As Dan said you cannot shut down production on Friday and then on Monday come in an build a totally changed car. Mercedes has always been with or ahead of most of the others in the performance and have lagged behind in the electronic extras area I think they will catch-up in this as well.
Their niche in the market place has always catered to people with money and will probably continue to do so.

Thanks for the feedback guys and Dan thanks for the enlightening info as always.

I was just wondering because as you know i'm looking at a 55 AMG so i'm just curious as to find out more info.

If what's said above has anything to do with it, i dont think we'd see a SLK63 AMG to be honest unless the price is pushed up dramatically in the SL range of prices because otherwise people would easily take that over the SL and if there were to be a SLK63, it would be a monster of note if the SL and C63's are anything to go by.

The next topic of debate is the panoramic vario roof, now or will it be in the 172 :P (just kidding)

Actually there are several prototype R171s with panoramic vario roofs running around, so this may be a possibility...if R171 sales dip below expected numbers, there may be another facelift which COULD include the pano roof.

Yeah they sure are knocking about somewhere, if thats a 171 thing or just a vario-roof thing on the other hand remains to be seen.

Always a possiblity

Panaromic would be quiet cool but I dont think they will allow this on the SLK55 solely as this disturbs the weight distribution especially since the front end is quiet heavy, MB didnt allow the C63 AMG to come with the panaromic roof.

The pano roof would be a cool factor to show off to friends but other than that it's pretty pointless in a convertible IMO.

Some times you want structural rigidity whilst having the benefits of a sunroof, thats why porsche offers the Targa 4s and the Posche Carrera 4S cabriolet.
