Extended Warranty

Gotta find an extended warranty for my '09... Any suggestions? As you know, FEW services are offered for AMGs...

The one dealership (MB/S Orlando) offered to continue my (mfr) warranty out to 7y/100k for $5000... MB/Sanford's (Autonation) price was $13,000!!! CarChex is $5200-$5800 (to 7y/75k)... What warranties are you using, how much were they, and are you happy? Please respond! (Thanks!)

Rupert, my 5 year/75k original mb warranty ended in May. I don't plan on spending for any extended warranty and just go with the changes.

I had an SLK32 and a Crossfire SRT6 (same thing) before the SLK55. Both were extremely reliable and cheap to maintain. These SLK55's aren't the potential money pits that some of the bigger more complex Mercedes are. No air suspension or active dampers. No forced induction on the 55. A mature engine platform in the M113 V8. The 7G-Tronic transmission has a known problem that's about $1,600 to fix. Mine was already done under warranty before I bought the car. And Mercedes does a fine job with all the ancillary systems, brakes, A/C, charging. I too opted for no extended warranty. The dealer where I bought the car quoted $10,000 for an extension to 100,000 miles. No way.

Took out a 5y/100k extended warranty on my wife's 2006 530i when the car had 48k on the odo and close to the mfg warranty end date. I paid $1600 to cover repairs to engine and tranny only. Never got to use it and when the car had engine problem, neither my local BMW shop nor an Indy shop could accept the warranty. I ended up paying the repairs out of pocket. No luck trying to get reimbursed either. I will be very careful with who you get an extended warranty from. Got to be very reputable and A+++, IMHO.

On my 05 55, I do not have extended warranty but have had to spend $2k fixing a fuel pump damage and some hose and pulley belt that came loose. Other than normal maint. costs... Knock on wood...

Good luck...

I opted for the extended warranty on my new SLK 55. It came with a 48 month/50,000 mile warranty. I added an additional 2 years of extended warranty for about $4,000. I did that because at the end of the 48 month period I can resell the warranty back to Mercedes for the amount paid. In 4 years, I’ll have more of a feel for the reliability of the car and I can then keep the warranty or sell it back to Mercedes. The warranty is also pro-rated and I have the option of getting a rebate for any unused portion of the extended coverage.

Might also be a good selling point if/when I sell the car at some future point in time?

Based on most of what I’ve read in the forums, I’m not sure an extended warranty is a great idea. I think the reason I opted for it with the new SLK 55 is because as a long term Corvette Z-06 owner I’d become accustomed to dealers that changed parts incessantly when they were confronted with a problem they couldn’t adequately troubleshoot. I’m thinking MB might be quite a bit better in troubleshooting their cars….. we will see!

I've almost had my 55 for a year and am thinking about getting the extended warranty - for many of the reasons thompstl1 states. Here's the pricing from the official MB brochure that they sent me (click to enlarge). I understand that it covers/excludes the same things as the original warranty. The pricing is mileage based, so the 5/75 is valid for 5 years or 75,000 miles - whichever comes first. Also, note that the pricing for an AMG is quite a bit more (Tier 3) than the price for a regular SLK (Tier 1)!

My 06 SLK 55 had 19,800 miles when I bought it a year ago. Since then I have put 5,000 miles on the car. So if I keep the car for another 5 years it will have approximately 45,000 miles on it. For me I don’t put enough miles on the car to make an extended warranty cost effective. Based on the likely problems noted on this forum which might occur at the end of the manufacturer’s new-car coverage, it appears that I would be unlikely to have a problem more costly than the $3,000 - $5,000 or so I have seen as the likely warranty cost. Since I had my car serviced at the local MB dealer they have sent me several offers for an extended warranty but I haven’t bothered to get a prices

If you get an extended warranty through MB do you need to get the car serviced at an MB dealership or can you use an Indy? What service documentation do you need to have if you use an Indy for maintenance?

I'm older so I drive fast as I have less time left to waste.

You have a 09 which has a 4 year factory warranty, the extended warranty is 7 years for $5,000. It most likely started by time the car was put into service. So you are really paying $5,000 for the additional 3 years. Like others above have said skip buying it. If you have the money up it in a bank for repairs and unless you are a hard driver and do not take care of it you will have money in the bank 3 years from now less a few small repairs.

If it is peace of mind you want pay the people $5,000, remember they are in the business to make a profit the advantage is on their side.

I was told (originally), that my warranty was 5yrs/50,000 mi... Now, I'm told it's 4yrs/50,000 mi... I'm calling MB to verify...

Yep, ALL vehicles have 4yrs/50,000 mi... For those who had different, I don't know what to say...

Thanks for all the feedback. However, some context is in order... Since I've had this car, the issues I've encountered (covered by warranty) are:
- fuel starvation issue
- adjust Pass. side rear window (gap)
- Replace interior roll bar panel
- Replace battery (Roadside Assistance)
- Vehicle stalling (required purchasing a second key - only had one with the car... fixed w/ new key & reflash of some ECU)
- power steering reservoir & seal (oil burning & smoke)
- Replace oil filler cap (clean engine of oil)
- Replace faulty Crank Sensor (performed default initialization for ME Control Unit & Rotor Adaptation, removed "Check Engine” light)
- replace Left Valve Cover gasket (R&R engine cover, air filter housing, all three belly pans, valve cover gasket, removed four coil packs, resealed upper chamber cover, replaced both vent hoses, cleaned oil residue)
- replaced collapsed transmission mount
- replaced scratched pass. side rear plastic/glass roof panel (twice)

Is this an unusual amount of issues for an AMG? What would these have cost w/o the warranty? What further problems can I expect?

BTW: just hit an unfortunate raccoon last night (trust me - unavoidable), for those in Orlando area - is Daya's where you go for body fixes?

All this bad Karma has me eye-ing that F-Type V8S even more...

Yep. Considering how hard I drive this car (daily), and the problems I've had with it so far - and that I'm enjoying it too much to get a replacement vehicle - I would like the piece of mind that an extended warranty brings. So, I'm gonna go with the 7/75 MB package ($3500) and just drive 200mi less per month, which is no problem, since my other car is also a lot of fun to drive (WRX!)... Thanks, everyone, for your input!

Hello,

So I dropped the ball and forgot my car manufacturer warranty expired less than a couple of weeks ago.... I looked around a couple of places for Extended warranty and the prices I'm getting are way higher than what people are posting here.

The MB dealer recommended I go with Zurich which quoted me 4Y/75K at $9200.
CarChex is quoting me for my 09 SLK55 4Y/75K at $6930
I've seen on this forum CarChex providing at less than HALF this price, I'm not sure why the price difference, is it because my warranty expired already? or have the prices increased THAT much the past year?

think of it as term life insurance. as you get older, the monthly payments go up!

That sucks so because I forgot to catch it in time I'm ending up paying more than double for extended warranty.... well I'm going to beat my self for a while about this oversight.

I would say skip the extented. 7000 to 9000 would pay for a lot of possible repairs. Put the money in the bank

My 2009 AMG warranty was due to expire last July. I shopped some independents then checked with my local MB dealer. MB waved $900 fees because I was extending it 2 months prior to expiration. Got 3 years ext/75k miles for $2,500. Two repairs under the original wnty would have paid for it. With issues like timing chain tensioners and weeping valve covers I look at it as prepaid repairs. The power steering pump was $1,600.
