Question SLK55 171 exhaust manifold

Guys and gals,

My RHS (when sitting in the car) exhaust manifold has sheared where it connects to the down pipe. My indy doesn't recommend that I attempt to get it welded for several reasons, but considering the price from MBUK, I'm tempted.

What do you guys think, or what experience do you have?

Sounds like a good time to upgrade to some headers! Get a performance increase and probably save money over MB. Kleemann has a nice design.

I'd suggest calling at a couple of the exhaust specialists that do X pipe.
As exhaust specialists they might also ID why it happened where it has.

Might be a couple listed here https://www.slkworld.com/mercedes-benz-repair-shops/

I know exactly how it happened - speed bump - and I might be speaking to LB Bexley about that....

The centre bracket/hanger is also sheared, but it's difficult to tell which part succumbed first, but my guess is the hanger, which allowed vibration and gravity to act on the manifold.

Welding the manifold is problematic, partly because of the material and partly because of the location. Considering how much labour is concerned, it would be a serious PITA if it let go again after a few thousand miles.

I was rather hoping someone who'd swapped for long tube headers had a standard manifold gathering dust on a garage shelf somewhere...

I passed up on a set of cheap brand new Kleemann a few months back, because my car is getting a bit old and high miles. Hindsight always 20/20...

For the record MBUK want 740/$935 per side.

I've found a set in New Jersey for abt 145/$185 delivered, duty paid, but I'd rather not wait 2-3 weeks for the parts to arrive and clear customs.

OK girls, update time, because that's what this forum is for - useful, accurate information, not jokes, opinions, idle banter or calling-out idiots.

I sourced a s/h perfect condition manifold from Germany, which worked out at 45 delivered by courier, and very well packed and presented. The company was kind enough to accept my bid price with good grace, so I will certainly work with them again as necessary.

I ordered four o/e Elring exhaust gaskets from Fleabay for 22 delivered.

My obliging indy removed/replaced charging three hours labour. At least one stud broke in the process.

The car is going back in a couple of weeks to have the front lower control arms replaced (Febi Bilstein - thanks Dave for the headsup), two new front tyres and the necessary alignment. Also, the exhaust bracket will be permanently repaired.

I'm preparing a case against the local council for an illegally sized speed-bump and I intend to be tenacious in my pursuit of compensation.

Since MBUK quoted 742 for the part and labour at 210/hour, the outcome could have been much worse, both for me and the local council....

Wondering how the indy broke the stud? There are copper nuts and breaking the stud is quite rare. At least I haven't broke a single one with last two AMG motors I have but headers.

Interesting, I'll ask him to elaborate next time I'm there.
