If you replaced your SLK55, what would you buy?

Hurricane Michael was a Category 5 storm at the time it hit Panama City, and many people lost their homes and their cars. I was luckier than most of the people in my area because I had less than $15,000 damage to my house and none of my vehicles were damaged. After the storm was over and the electricity came back on, I started thinking about what I would buy if I had to replace my SLK55. So here is my question: If you had to replace your SLK55, what would you buy?

I’d get a 718 Boxster S or an F-Type S. I would lean towards the Jag because I like the interior better. I drove both before choosing the 55.

Interesting question I have been asking myself this year.

Something convertible with a big engine - probably Aston Martin.

Also tempted by the F type SVR; however we had a Jag before and it had shocking build quality - at 30,000 miles it felt like 120,000: everything was loose and rattled.

A 55! R171.
Unless short on dosh.
Then it'd be the best 170 I could afford.

I have been looking at C63's for the past year or so. Feel happy I didn't buy one this time last year as the value of them has dropped rather sharply over the last year. They map to 540bhp though and sound ridiculous with the added ability of being slightly more practical for me now.

Like for like - I'd love a vantage, they look amazing but they are lacking grunt on the older ones.

Thanks for all of the good suggestions. I’ve been looking at and considering quite a few different cars lately, but the only one that put a bit of a simile on my face when I drove it was a Porsche 718 Cayman GTS, which I believe had a sport chrono package. What put more of a smile on my face was getting back into my SLK55 and driving home. I guess I need to keep looking.

I couldn't fine anything else with a big V8 in such a small package, that is why I went with the SLK. It is a hard combo to beat! The handling is decent too for how short it is, much more solid than the Z3/Z4.

I drove one as well, I missed the third pedal in my SLK. But, the sound and the push in the seat of the pants in the SLK is non-comparable. Of course, as I drove away from the Porsche dealership, with the top down - VROOM ROAR, I said to myself, “Yeah........“.

I can’t think of anything else that comes close to an AMG so it would have to be another AMG.

Seriously considering Tesla Model 3 Performance. 460 BHP, 4 wheel drive, 3.4sec to 100km/h. It's running circles around my 55 trying to keep up. I drove on yesterday (my brother's). Seriously different than any gasoline powered car.

I spent last summer shopping for SL55s and SL63s, but wound up liking the SLK55. If I had to get something other than an SLk55, I'd want an AMG GTC, or maybe a Tesla Roadster. I got an E300 when my car was in for the airbag recall, It was a very nice car, but I realized how addictive AMGs are.

Hiya Folks,

We own several vehicles for several purposes. The R171 SLK 55 AMG fits the bill perfectly for open top touring. We are now onto our second one after a long absence and the AMG takes it to a new level - the perfect transition between slipping around town and then unleashing a beast when required.

Some of our motoring misadventures include:

1938 MB 170Va is great for a slow drive into the vineyards - not bad for an 80-year-old SLK and is a credit to Mercedes Engineering in a bygone era;
1985 928 S for grand touring - covered New Zealand in an epic tour driving a super lazyboy chair that gets to 110km/h in first gear in a shade under 5 seconds in search of Golam;
1985 930 Turbo for an insane experience of being strapped to a raw unguided missile prone to shock you when least expecting it with only a steering wheel, accelerator and 4-speed box and no driver aids - a sure experience that will outperform any modern narcotic;
1985 RUF SCR prototype for the odd track day in a classic unicorn - prior to this a Cayman S was an excellent track-day monster;
1995 W124 E500 Limited for luxury touring with a group of 4 in one of Porsche's only Mercedes Creations;
1989 VW Golf GTi small bumper for touring around Europe for months on end with a healthy dose of performance;
2009 and 2010 Smart 451's for slipping around town on journeys and fits two to a single parking in the apartment....

The AMG R171 SLK is perfectly placed for many worlds and offers the best car for money in decades.

Cheers

Perry
