Could have been much worse

Last week the dreaded check engine light came on. The rustbucket started chuffing. I have a AAA exclusionary mechanical warranty that has no deductible if I bring it to a AAA shop. So, away I went. The error code thrown was misfire. Plug was pulled, badly fouled. Technician sticks a borescope in, says the cylinder is full of oil. Possible causes valve train or piston rings. I was told this problem is above their paygrade, have the car transported to a Mercedes AMG specialist about 100 miles away. The flatbed comes, drives the car up onto it and I waved goodbye to the rustbucket. I figured I wouldn’t see the car again. This was on Friday a week ago. The Following Tuesday I get a phone call from the service manager. It seems the fouled plug was not fouled with oil. It was carbon fouling. Apparently seeing oil in a cylinder for an AMG is not unusual. The problem turned out to be a leaking injector. The extended warranty company was charged $2400, problem supposedly fixed. I went 100 miles to pick up my car and drive home. When I got off the highway after about a 90 mile ride, downshifting as is my want, the car belched out a gnourmus cloud of smoke from the tailpipe. Of course, by this time it was too late to contact the dealer, or so I thought. I called and left a message – amazingly enough the service manager called me right back. He had me check the oil, it looked to be slightly overfilled the best I could tell. He had his AMG specialist call me back the next morning, who advised me that it’s possible under hard deceleration and high vacuum, the slight overfilling could cause some smoke to come out the exhaust - nothing to worry about. Drive it and see if it happens again. So far so good. Any feedback from our AMG 172 experts? Now you know why I call it the rustbucket.

Over filling can cause big damage. Truck it back or get a loakie to drain it and re-fill to the standard level!

GS is right. Depending on how much its overfilled, the con rods can beat the oil into foam. Foamed oil is a terrible lubricant or worse case the oil pump won't pump foam at all.

Everything that I have ever read on overfilling is not good.
A slight underfill is much safer.

Needs resolving.

If you'd done it yourself I'd say get an oil pump and suck some out.
As they did it, you will want confirmation from them.
Just in case of any damage it may have caused.

Denial is the first defence of a claim.

Hey, if it destroys my engine I get a new car! They just did the 50 K service on it at the same time so they cannot deny that the damage came from their overfilling.

Well, I have been playing the gearbox sonata for a while, no more smoke. I’ll drive it until it dies. After all, it’s just a rustbucket.

I'm not clear on my read: was the 50K done by AAA or the AMG specialist? Thanks!

Latest update, no more smoke. Although when I put The Garbage Scow into the garage, I think I smell a little bit of burnt oil. It could just be my paranoia though.

Thumbs down Update: it got much worse!

Update:

I dropped The Garbage Scow off in Charlotte (another hundred mile drive) because the check engine light came on again. My scanner read misfire on cylinder five – same as before. Just got off the phone with my service advisor, hope you’re sitting down for this, cracked piston. Service advisor claims that I could’ve driven the car in such a way to crack the piston. I want to know why they didn’t pick it up last time. The odds of a defective, leaking injector in the same cylinder as a cracked piston to me are vanishingly small. When I brought it in in March where they told me there was a defective injector, I told the technician I was burning oil, he tried to tell me that was acceptable.

Tell me how I could’ve driven the car in such a way to crack the piston? This car has been a dealership queen, every service is been through a dealership – on time!

The bill to repair is estimated to be about $10K. Words do not begin to express my opinion of this vehicle at this time.

The only track this car has seen has been when I drove by one. I average 24 miles the gallon, so you can see I’m really hard on it as well. When I take the car out it is driven for no less than 15 miles so it comes up to temperature.

Somebody, give me a reason not to take this thing out to pasture and dynamite it!

^^^You lost me at the $10K repair bill How much is the car worth at this point if it needs that much cost to get it back to running condition? I'd be all over the AMG Specialist shop in Charlotte for them to keep the car until they figure out their March diagnosis versus their June diagnosis... Something isn't right...

Unhappy Update: it got much worse!

Just got off the phone with the technician. “I have never seen a cracked piston like this before“. “A Mercedes-Benz engineer in Jacksonville is very interested in hearing what our findings are“.

I have got to be related to Murphy.

The technician said “When you brought the car in last, I borescoped it then, the piston looked fine”.
I’ve been advised it may be several months before I get my car back. AMG, parts from Germany.

So, do I do a Forrest Gump and keep the car, or get a new one?

Current SLK track record:

1) R171 350 - Wonderful vehicle, everything a Mercedes should be.

2) R172 55 - Calling it a Garbage Scow is an insult to Garbage Scows everywhere. Most Yugo’s are better. And I mean current Yugo’s!

I am truly conflicted. Much as I like my SLK(s), the epithets that come to mind regarding the current vehicle are not fit for polite company. I have been a sports car person my whole life, the number of vehicles I’ve owned that are not two seaters can be counted on one hand with lots of fingers left over.

I have been driving for the better part of a half a century, never have I ever had these kind of problems in any car I’ve owned. Mind you I’ve even owned a Sunbeam Alpine and it had less problems. My friend has a 1980 Ferrari 308 GTSI, and it hasn’t had these kind of problems.

And here may be a reason for the overfill. Did they drain the oil from the oil cooler as well as that from the sump? See the attached workshop procedure for performing an oil and filter change on the M152 engine and specifically Step5. "To enable all the engine oil to be drained, the engine oil return line (9) must be detached for at least 5 minutes from the oil cooler (10).Otherwise, any engine oil remaining in the oil cooler (10) may result in overfilling after the specified oil change quantity has been added, which in turn can result in damage to the engine and catalytic converter."

Without you telling them you know the procedure ask them to explain what the process is that they employ to see if they miss out this vital step. This step requires them to take off the front undertray in addition to the centre undertray to drain the sump.

Definitely a manufacturing flaw in the piston. Sarge, do you have a special mezuzah on your car to avoid these problems? Where can I get one? The angel of Death (or perhaps Mayham), keeps visiting this car.
