My car is 2012 with 23,000mls on the clock in the last 3 months it has had Hydraulic roof work, Both Exhaust flaps, Headlights modification due to water ingress/condensation. it appears no matter how many miles you do sometimes the lack of use causes problems. I would go with having the car covered by warranty.
Did you have it since new? If not, then the e.w. makes some sense--for you.
OP has had it since new so it goes back to him knowing what's been done/what's gone wrong as it will help in his decision.
As has been said, warranty co are in the business to make money. Same as insurance companies.
They count on you NOT making any claims.
Something else to consider: how often has something broken down a day? a week? a month? after the factory warranty expires? Yes? No?
IF you had bought that e.w., the same principle applies. Sure, we all know that there will ALWAYS be some repairs down the road. ALWAYS.
If you had bought that e.w. and it expired and it broke down after that date, well you'd be out that $5,000 or whatever and STILL have to pay to get it fixed.
Now, if you had NOT got that e.w., you'd still have that $5,000 to fix the problem. That's how I looked at it back at day one (mine was 4 yr old at the time of purchase) and that's how I rationalized not getting the e.w. .
It's not an easy decision and you will second guess yourself after you decide. But decide you must.
So really, it comes down to:
