2016 SLK55 keep/extended warranty/sell?

The car is coming up to 3yrs old on 29th April, already booked in for the service and MOT. Its still in as new condition, always garaged when not used or being washed/polished, and has just turned 10k miles.

I absolutely adore the car, everything about it. I've been doing some thinking recently, with the 3yrs nearly up, and the thought that the MB warranty expires too. In a dilemma re extended warranty, had the crazy quote for Tier 1, whilst through MB its actually underwritten by a 3rd party (not surprised), is it worth it, or take the risk and fund any problems that arise? I'd be grateful for the thoughts of those of you who have gone through this dilemma, and which way you opted, and why?

My thoughts right now is to not extend. I do relatively low mileage approx 3.5k a year, and don't see this changing much. But then again, if something was to go wrong, its likely to be pricey whether through MB or an Indie.

One other frightening thought I've had is to put it up for sale :-(

Been discussed many times but you have had it and know what repairs (if any) were needed.

I also do about the same milage as you (garaged for 5-6 mo/yr). Save your money that it would cost and put it in a savings account. No repairs? You still have the money. Repairs? You have the money to pay for it.

Don't give it away. Mine is 7 yr and only scheduled maintenance. Had it for 3 years and saved $3,000. Five year ext warr was $5,000 for me.

Do the math

I bought a seven-year exclusionary warranty for almost $9000. It adds an additional 72,000 miles and covers pretty much everything. I sleep at night. It is in right now for a fouled spark plug. I was told it was a defective injector and the repair tab would be $2000 if I was paying for it myself. I had to have it flat bedded 100 miles. I know for a fact I will be replacing the roof hydraulics at some point. It is an SLK after all.

3 years old
10K miles so far
3.5K miles per year usage projected....

Your car is practically new, and by your projection, will stay a low miler for a very long time... in fact, by the year 2029, your car will not even be at 50K miles yet. So why the worry? My car is close to 50K miles already, and except for 2 cat converters replaced under CPO warranty (@ ~30K miles on the clock), it has been blissful to own and enjoy driving daily.

Like Len said, don't waste your money, save it and if/when the repair comes, you got the money to cover it.

The reason You take out extended warranty/breakdown insurance is if Your short on money and can't afford a big bill in one hit.... If this is a second car/weekend car it also helps that You can take Your time & get a repair done cheaper..

My only other bit of advise, apart from the usual CTECK Charger, is to garage a prize SLK with a "ECOAIR Desiccant Dehumidifier"
>> Example: https://www.appliancesdirect.co.uk/p...-dehumidifier?
This helps to keep the humidity down during our damp UK winters and would help against electrical gremlins...!!

A dehumidifier might be a good idea if the car was stored in a fairly well-sealed room protected from the outside air.

Not so much use in a garage though.

I'm fortunate to have a double skinned, well insulated garage, and its always in there when not being driven or washed.

Sorry, I disagree. The reason you take out a genuine MB Tier 1 Warranty is because you can afford it.
I hate paying for mine once a year, but afterwards I enjoy twelve months of worry free motoring. Over the years Ive had a new hydraulic vario roof pump, seat control computer and boot seals, my current car has had exhaust flaps and DRL replacement under Warranty (before I owned it).
Also it gives MB Warranted repairs with genuine parts.
Of course its a personal decision, only you can decide if its right for you.

@TonyS3 any idea how much for an extended warranty for our cars? Just been onto the MB website and the quote feature is inactive.

Sounds expensive to me.
I paid 680-750 per year on my 350s , but it goes up rapidly after 60K Miles.
Im currently paying 1006 per year on the 55AMG.

Sure, if You can afford it I guess it does give stress free AMG ownership

I owned My R171 for 6 years/43k miles and all I paid for was for servicing (Inc Aircon), new 18" Alloy wheel & a Software update on the Gearbox....

But the general point I was making is that all warranties make a profit for who ever is running them, so in the long term if You don't take out extended warranty on Your Washing Machine, Toaster, Bread Maker, Cuddly Toy ect, over a life time You will be financially better off.
(This is assuming You didn't run over the Black Cat, that ran in front of You... )

My car is 2012 with 23,000mls on the clock in the last 3 months it has had Hydraulic roof work, Both Exhaust flaps, Headlights modification due to water ingress/condensation. it appears no matter how many miles you do sometimes the lack of use causes problems. I would go with having the car covered by warranty.

Did you have it since new? If not, then the e.w. makes some sense--for you.

OP has had it since new so it goes back to him knowing what's been done/what's gone wrong as it will help in his decision.

As has been said, warranty co are in the business to make money. Same as insurance companies.

They count on you NOT making any claims.

Something else to consider: how often has something broken down a day? a week? a month? after the factory warranty expires? Yes? No?

IF you had bought that e.w., the same principle applies. Sure, we all know that there will ALWAYS be some repairs down the road. ALWAYS.

If you had bought that e.w. and it expired and it broke down after that date, well you'd be out that $5,000 or whatever and STILL have to pay to get it fixed.

Now, if you had NOT got that e.w., you'd still have that $5,000 to fix the problem. That's how I looked at it back at day one (mine was 4 yr old at the time of purchase) and that's how I rationalized not getting the e.w. .

It's not an easy decision and you will second guess yourself after you decide. But decide you must.

So really, it comes down to:

Tony can please tell me who your 55 AMG warranty is with as I have just been quoted the same as the original poster @bigboyows from Mercedes Benz (for the tier 1 cover is 1699 for 1 year, 3350 for 2 years, or 163 per rolling month).
