Amg 55 172 early impressions.

I've had my 2012 AMG 55 for a couple of weeks now so thought I'd post my first impressions of the car.. I've not owned an Slk before so it is all new to me, but so far it has lived up to all my hopes. Lovely drive in C mode. In fact fairly unremarkable when keeping within the legal limits. It's a job to get it above 1500 revs without getting 3 points on the licence. Amazing mpg for an engine of this size when in C mode, getting 30 mpg easily. Occasional kick downs liven things up a bit, and bring in that great V8 bark.

In Sports mode everything sharpens up, with the gearbox much more responsive to changes in throttle input, plus a slightly sharper sound from the exhaust, and ready to fly at the touch of the loud pedal.

Manual mode is great fun, flicking the gears up and down feeling like Lewis Hamilton, and getting the revs up a bit really makes the exhaust sing, without having to do excessive speed. In fact I am surprised when I look at the speedo, as I feel I am going faster than I actually am, so that's handy on our roads..

This really is a roof down car. The only time you need the roof up is when it's raining. What with the air scarf (which my wife loves) the heated seats and the heater blowing we've been toasty warm, and think it would be much the same when the weather gets colder. The car looks a mean machine in diamond white with black wheels and red leather.

Looking forward to a few more open top drives out when the weather is right.

Another happy motorist has seen the light OR rather, all the other motorists only see your tail lights

In the cold (ya, I know that using summer tires I shouldn't be out in <7o weather), I find that when I have all the heaters going (vent, scarf and seat), my feet start to sweat

Had mine over two years and covered 25000 miles in her! Still brings a smile to my face every time I drive her!

I'm not mean... but I am 'roofless' at every opportunity!

The SLK55 is the best car I have ever driven: fast, responsive, and good looks.

Red face

It's a great little car, isn't it? There is one downside to it that you'll get to in a couple of months. Running costs. Especially when parked with the dealer or when new shoes are in order. Parts are expensive, dealer hours are expensive and you want real tires to cope with g-forces and launch control. But all that is forgotten when the hood is open and a twisty road is in front of you.

Glad you are loving it... I'm a year in and even though I look at what I could replace her with. Nothing delivers a bigger bang for your buck!

- hard to beat the V8 motor, the last naturally aspirated one ever to grace a Mercedes, probably.
- great noise when rumbling along in sport and at full tilt love the cracks on upshift
- fast and surprises a few peeps
- pulls hard from a standstill with no initial hesitation
- handling is good, Michelin PS4s have really made a significant difference
- great looking car, especially with 19's
- the boot is the practical
- road tax is reasonable
- monthly Mercedes service plan is good value
- not too flashy so I don't worry about parking it on the street
- hard top makes it secure and pano roof is great on the odd occasion you can't get the roof down
- did I mention the V8!!!
- good image, seen as a Petrol head's choice
- rare - only 15 on autotrader! (154 - 981 Porsche Boxster's)
- 2 cars in 1. Comfortable cruiser and a right little beast when needed

Enjoy!!
