Question Newbie questions - looking to buy R171 55

Hi,

so I've decided its time to scratch AMG v8 itch and I thinking an R171 55 sounds like a good idea. I've been to see a couple but am struggling to get a handle on a few things despite lots of googling and reading on here and Pistonheads.

Of the cars I've seen, one had been serviced every years / roughly 10k miles while the other had been serviced every 2 years and I think every 20k miles but I might be remembering that incorrectly. I know that the all important gearbox oil change is every 40k miles but what's the correct servicing interval for the rest of the car?

Some cars also don't appear to have a service book and the owners just provide a printout from MB of the service history. This printout I've seen in two different forms, one was printed record with the details of the items carried out (but on this car never had a record of the oil change, that seem wrong?). The other form was actually a number of screenshots of what appeared to be the servicing system connected to the car to show its service history. Is it correct that MB didn't supply service history books, if so when was this from?

I'm based in the UK (London area) if that changes anything in terms of different requirements. I saw some posts that I'm guessing were for the US market that included things like tyre (or tire as it was spelt) rotation in the service record.

Any other tips on what to look out for would also be appreciated of course!

R171 guide here:

https://www.slkworld.com/general-disc...checklist.html

The r171 AMG 55 is practically bulletproof
the valve cover likes to seep but that really is all
find one with good maintenance records

No clue of what is normal in the UK, but at least in Sweden there should be a service book with stamps for each service done. Never seen one without it.

As far as when service is needed, the car will tell you. Scroll the menues and you will find out.

What Jeff told is true: the car/motor is more or less bullet proof.

Just go for it - you will not regret it

Do you have a "Carfax" kind of think in the UK? Before buying my r171 55 I bought the carfax report and it listed every single Mercedes service and repair, plus a bunch of other interesting information. Good info for a pretty cheap cost.

Carfax lists the services, but with very little detail, and afaik missing the critical "items owner declined to fix".

My practice is to first pick out the place I plan to do my service work, and ideally let them do a pre purchase inspection.

Yes, UK and all cars should have original service book. And why would the owner lose it or not get it stamped? Helps resale value. Anyway, unless it's a huge mileage car, a good test drive should give you indications of neglect even if oil changes infrequent. It's a big understressed unit. Check for iffy gear changes from cold. There is an initial transmission service at 40k and plugs (16 of em!) at 80k or 5 years. Good luck!

Googling the question you pose regarding service records it appears that MB introduced Digital Service Records in or around 2007/8 in the UK. When I purchased my previous 2010 SLK 350 there was no Service Book. My local MB dealer was happy to provide me with the historical Digital Service Records ( these are printouts not screenshots of the servicing system) for the car even though I was not purchasing through them. It gave me the confidence that the car had been maintained to the correct frequency. They will not have the records for any servicing done outside of the main dealer network or approved Mercedes Independent. For my current car servicing is 12months or 15,000 miles whichever occurs first. The front and rear tyres are different sizes both on the R171 SLK55 and R172 SLK55 and therefore cannot be rotated

We do, it's called a HPI check (there are other versions too). It's good for checking things like if the car has finance outstanding or has had the mileage tampered with but doesn't give you maintenance records.

Thanks. That's helpful.

Now I just need to figure out the right service interval for a 2008 car...

I saw this one yesterday and quite liked it

That I did not know so I stand corrected. I always thought an owner's fully endorsed service book was a bit of a trophy but I guess a digital do dah is the same in the long run! Like many of us tho, I prefer to use a local indie MB specialist.

Looks good. Has flat bottomed (expensive) smaller option steering wheel. Is that a standard radio for an 08 anyone? Personally I would be all over it !

The car is advertised as the facelifted version of the R171 SLK55 and the radio looks to be NTG2.5 head unit .

Its a private sale so would be lower than if purchased from a Dealer offering warranty etc. It does however look to be priced to sell. Regarding Service Interval from memory I believe it is every 12 months or 12,500 miles whichever occurs first.

NTG2.5 has been introduced for Model Year 2009 vehicles (except those with NTG3/4), which has a
built in hard disk, bluetooth, and no seperate controller.

NTG1 was fitted up until Model Year 2009 in the W220 S, W215 CL, R230 SL, W211 E, W219 CLS, R171 SLK vehicles.

The NTG1 head unit (COMAND) can play DVD and MP3 loaded CD/DVDs also.

We have two R171s.
55 has paper records.
350 has digital.

When MB introduced digital owners still had the option to have a service book.

The early 55s had 6 pot front brakes.
Later 4 pots were fitted as standard, with the 6 as an option.

The hardest thing is if you want other than silver and black.
Blue and red usually sell fast. In summer that can be as little as 3 days.

The very early 55s attract a lower annual road tax. The older get hit for 500+

Mine gets used as a daily driver as well as tours and shows.

If you do the new/used list you won't go far wrong.

It's the transmission oil etc at 40K and absolutely by 70K latest.
Engine oil should be annual.

Worth getting the alignment checked (40-50) as it will show up the
early signs of suspension and associated parts wearing.
