Question ECU Remap...which supplier?

Having had an Xpipe fitted and 2nd decat done on my 2007 SLK55 AMG I'm now considering an ECU remap to hopefully sharpen things up a bit.

I am looking at 3 possible suppliers for the remap: CKS, who state 391hp and 407 tq achievement, Celtic Tuning who quote 395hp and 420tq and MSL Eurocharged who have good general reviews but don't quote any figures for SLK55

CKS and Celtic bother me because they do not use a Dyno during the remap, so there is no way of knowing what the start point for the car was and whether they have achieved their quoted figures. MSL use the Eurocharged map and I think do apply it with real time dyno logging/tuning input, but there is nothing on their UK site which mentions any SLK55 experience.

I would welcome any objective input based on members' personal experiences with any of these suppliers, especially more recent ones. And finally, should I even bother getting a remap..is it worth the money?

Cheers
John

As well as power a remap can get you better mpg.

As for 'predicted' numbers...nothing guaranteed.
Every car is different, tolerances, wear etc can vary enough to alter output.

The fact that one Co. 'MSL' doesn't quote predicted numbers and from what you say does use a dyno...
I'd say you answered your own question.

Thanks, you're right I'd rather have a real time dyno approach if its available.

So has anyone had direct experience of using MSL (in Birmingham)? My understanding is that they picked up the UK Eurocharged dealership in 2017 when the original went bust

On n/a engine you never gain that much hp. But you your car will transform in better after remap, better throttle response, better torque, vmax removed, better mpg.
SLK is losing about 70hp only from the transmission, so your stock from new at the wheel will pul 280-290 hp. So, I really don't think they will increase your power to 390hp.
But I am sure you will not be disappointed with the remap.

Here's some reading regarding a chipped R172 SLK55 and gains. You're told 10% increase?

I've got personal experience with MSL in Birmingham, they did some work including a remap on my 32.
They're known Merc specialists, and did indeed do a before and after dyno, with printouts.

They weren't the cheapest quote I got but they looked after me and the 32 very well, and I wouldn't hesitate to use them again if need be.

Hi All
Had my 55 at MSL just over 1 1/2 years ago for sport headers , ECU upgrade & front Cat deleted , Already had the Xpipe fitted . They did 3 dyno runs one before & after & the last as a double check . Your get about an extra 25bhp with just the ECU work & another 25bhp with the sport headers . MSL do look after you & they know there stuff with AMGs etc . Its no Merc showroom as its an very old building that they are in . But you would not want to pay showroom prices .

Cheers

Superchips do a conservative remap. My 55 is standard apart from K&N"s. For around 300 is it worth it I wonder? Can't afford the insurance hike for a proper make over but would consider it being mildly breathed on. Any advice?

DMS in Southampton have a very good reputation for ECU optimisation, they adjust the map in your actual car (not simply load something from the shelf and let you drive off) and also have a dyno for Before/After measurements. They can also do the Gearbox Control Unit (TCU) and this makes probably the biggest difference in terms of feel. Nice chaps too.

I had a Eurocharged tune put on mine last year and it is a huge difference! I am really happy with it. They take the tune off your car, send it to their tuner and then reflash on to your car after he tweaks it. It sounds like all of Eurocharged only uses 2 tuners, so they are very familiar with the tunes. I am very happy with mine and they did not do a dyno on mine, it was Eurocharged Orlando.

Hi again..thanks for all inputs; just thought Id update on my dealings with each of the four potential ECU tuning suppliers.

CKSjust a generic map, no dyno but lowest price. Ruled them out.

CELTIC..even though they quote improved HP and TQ figures, when questioned they could not give me a testimonial from another SLK55 AMG customer. They say can send someone to your home address to do the remap. If you want a custom map and dyno then you have to go to Newquay, 500 mile round trip for me! Ruled them out.

DMS.. all sounded good to start, said they knew the SLK55 AMG well I told them mine is a 171. They then quoted me improvement figures for a 172?? Said the tuning is all done with Dyno support. Quoted me the highest price. Didnt feel comfortable so ruled them out.

MSL..These guys immediately said all the right things, obviously knew the SLK55 AMG 171. Were realistic when quoting potential improvement gains HP +30 TQ +30. The map they use is Eurocharged and this is customised to the car during the mapping process with 3 dyno runs included. They recommended putting in K&N filters to go with my X pipe and 2nd decat. They were the most flexible in terms of cost and methods of payment.
So Im going with MSL.

Just off to Thailand now for a couple of weeks on motorbike tour of N Thailand and Laos, Ill book in when I get back.

A rethink rather than a re-map....one of the better explanations out there....talks about N/A at around 6:34

This has been discussed at length. One other member said (which agrees with this clip at 6.34) that without the extra hardware, ecu remapping isn't worth much. Talking about N/A engines.

Hmmm interesting video...according to him "s/w only gives you nothing"

So with just K&N filter, X pipe and 2nd decat sounds like an ECU remap would just be a waste of my money?

You'll get a LOT of opinions both ways. In the end you'll have to decide based on your evaluation of the arguments/testimonials presented.

I decided against it last summer based on minimal expected gains and that I was NOT prepared to do the necessary equipment mods.

For ME, 415 hp is not enough but considering the roads we get to travel on, it IS enough .

I certainly don't want to go to the cost of adding headers etc at this point.

This whole tuning thing is a slippery slope that can swallow your money...maybe I should just save up and buy a 172

Do some paper comparisons by reading reviews. And I don't mean Jeremy Clarkson 😉

Here's one for your unit https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.cara...-amg-road-test

Better yet, go test drive one and see in real life how the 172 compares to YOUR 171.

That's where I kinda ended up.

Looked at a full jobie. The result would have been 'interesting' but then the OH said:
'What happens in Winter and in the wet?' as she 'borrows' it on occasion.

Killed it stone dead.
Year round driver.
whilst I know I'd have had 'fun' in the dry, the dry is not often enough.
and I am not reducing this baby to a couple of months in summer car. She deserves to be driven.

So my new theory is this:
The money I'd have spent on performance can now go into a refurb pot whilst parts are still available (already questionable).
So, by 15 years old I want all seals and rubbers to be replaced as a base and a bunch of other stuff too.
It may cost, but this is the car I want and an extra 15 years is worth it.
