Unhappy 1st thing to break!!! :(

Sigh!! , my SLK55BS has been running beautifully for 880km until 2 days ago, the - shift paddle decided to fall off......... Arrrhh....

Now, the car is in MB service centre waiting for parts and have the technician go through the car once over.... lets hope the replacement part car fly in very soon!!

Strangely, every post regarding a paddle breaking has always been the left side. Sorry to see it ;(

i know that i'm in the minority, but i really don't like the paddles. they just look like they would get in the way. even with the low profile tabs on my car, i've accidentally hit them and down shifted when i didn't mean to.

That's why it would make more sense to put the paddles on the column and not the wheel itself.

I rarely use the buttons... almost always the gear lever.

The paddles are more state of the art as with other fine car brands. I've never used the paddles, the "buttons" work just fine. I'm in agreement with DSB, I prefer using the shifter.

I preffer using the buttons, i hate flappy paddles driven my car in s or m mode most of the time.

Blk slk, did the paddle fall just like that or did you apply lots of force when you downshifted? The part might be too delicate as like other items.

Haa haa... No, I wasn't THAT excited.... It just fell out while I parked in my friend's garage having a chat. Once I got back to the car, the paddle just dangling like that!! Sigh.... I receive no call from MB service centre yet, I hope they can get the parts soon!!!

Shouldn't take them long mate stuff from Germany is normally 5-7 days even when they are busy.

Would they do a quick fix on it for you while you are waiting?

Dan, when I first told the problem to the service manager, he said to me the only way to fix it is to change the whole steering wheel! I burst out laughing and said that would be great, I would like the new one to be in full Alcantara. Haa haa... Anyway, thanks to the forum, now I know it is a common problem, that can be fixed quiet easily.

I am pretty sure they can get the parts in quickly, as my family's 06' S500L, they managed to get in a brand new gear box for a warranty claim within 8 days, which really amazed me...!!

8 days is quiet good to get a full gearbox, what an exceptionaly well service department you've got.

BLK SLK, full alacantra with red stitching even better.

I use the paddles a lot on my car because whenever i reach for the shifter i find myself also looking for a clutch and trying to shift like a manual.

When it comes to paddle placement i have used both column mounted and wheel mounted paddles and i really can't say either are good, for instance when i am driving the old man's car about town (Maserati Coupe) i love that the paddles are on the column because of the amount of turns you need to give the wheel at these slower speeds so i can turn the wheel upside down and still have the downshift paddle where i expect it.

But when I'm taking a more sporting approach to driving out on the back roads i prefer the Merc because your able to keep your hands on the same spot on the wheel for the majority of the twists and turns you encounter and are always ready to make a shift you don't need to hunt for the paddle like you do on column mounted paddles, so say you turn the wheel 90 degrees you must move your hand back to the original position when you need to use the paddle otherwise you find yourself just touching the lower section of it and doing nothing but bending it because you can't apply enough force to engage the button.

Somebody needs to make a moving ring with paddles mounted and the driver can have it rotate with the wheel or stay locked in place with a button press.

I will be happy if I could change to a full alcantara, which I should request it with the factory roll cage when I place my order. Oh well....

Myself, I prefer the SLK style paddle shift as it allows you to change gear while the wheel is turned. The F430 style, I found it a little awkward.

8 days! thats very good for a gearbox.

I think they sometimes get confused with the paddles because the buttons where not available separately, paddles are.

That's a very good comparison. Funny, I recall reading a review of Maserati vs Mercedes. In it, they mentioned the difference in paddle placement. Points were given to the Maserati for placing them on the column making it easy to find the desired shift. However, they noted that the Mercedes transmission was so intuitive that they rarely had the need to change the gears and simply left it in S mode.

So, I think that might be the reason many of us rarely use the buttons. The 7G is so good (holding gears in turns, etc) that the paddles/buttons are more of a cosmetic than functional feature.

One thing I wish I could do is drive in S mode but start in 2nd gear. That would be perfect for my driving style. S is great but 1st is just too short for daily driving.

It does. However, I like the S mode because of it's higher shift points. So, perhaps a C1, C2, S, and M mode. I can only wish.
