The HOW ******* much?? 55 Insurance thread....

well my first rookie mistake and I'm a little embarrassed to be honest... I assumed modded SLK would fall into the specialist insurance category like most of my previous cars errrr no

I called my broker to swap over from the Lightning and he said - that'll be 560 please saaaaay what now?? You mean 560 in total don't you? No sir that's 560 EXTRA on your policy you started in November
"Soooooo you're trying to tell me that you want to charge me an annual premium of damn near 950?"
"Yes sir, it is a premium and modified car"
(aka "I think not good sir!")

So long story short I'm at a level where I'm not particularly happy but I'm accepting of - 450 (only problem is, I'm still in stupid mode - I can't remember the excess think it's 350...)

So how are you are finding insuring your 55's?

What they want extra is about what I pay. As a second (zero ncd) car.

Shop around and make use of the web sites.
Even if you don't use those companies you have bargaining power.

I've just paid about 450 for my 2005 SLK AMG on a multicar policy 4,000 miles per year. My SLK 320 was about 375 so really not much more. I expected it to be higher but was pleasantly surprised. Excess is 250. Yeah shop around!

Nowhere near what you are being quoted - but then I am an old b*gger!!!

What's classed as modified? Is it a standard car or have you modified it?

No Claims Bonus, if you are a new driver with zero years experience you pay an insurance premium, if after a year it has been an accident or claims free year the insurance company will give a discount on the next years premium usually 20% if you are good and dont claim or have accidents over the next few years this can rise to 70% discount on your insurance premium.
If you buy a second car you have to start over again earning the No Claims Bonus.

Regards Stuart

My SLK 320 cost 194.00 with zero NCB thanks to the Meerkats.

like I said I'm now quoted @ 450 - I could get it for 350 but I'm not paying 800 excess. Few more places to try though the mods don't help my cause.... though I am old

I don't think you can really compare person to person like you're asking.

Diff rates in different cities for diff people etc etc.

I'd tell you mine but it would only make you angrier

Of course one country can't be compared to another, but the principle of car insurances around the globe will be the same: a mandatory part for liability and extensions for those that want it for theft and on top of that the all risks part. Normally driver age (not necessarily owner age), past driver claims (not necessarily damages sustained) and (for theft) the price and the 'wantability' of the car will be thrown in a mix to determine premiums. Insurer competition and margins will do the rest.

My 55 was 120K EUR new (thanks to Governmental environmental taxes) back in 2012. I'm an older bugger at 54 but I've had only one previous car after 15 years of two wheels only. That makes for 'no history' which translates to maximum danger for the insurer. In the mean time I've proven that in the last 7 years I've not had any claims (damages yes, just not claimed) and I've upgraded with my 55 to liability with theft. The previous R171 350 I took out just liability because of the insane premiums. I'm paying around 700 EUR annually with 7 years of NCB (7 years will give me the maximum of around 70% discount on the gross premium, but claim once and they'll start taking years away)

Theft of an 'expensive' car comes with extra regulations which you have to pay for yourself: T&T system at an authorized company which in my case set me back another 250 EUR a year.

Last year I've had a discussion with my (direct) insurance company on what would be reimbursed upon theft. Shocking: around 40K. They agreed that the T&T would not apply on a car of only 40K. If I wouldn't have called them they would just continue to let me pay another 250 each year for something that wouldn't matter anyway. I've got my own T&T now, without the expensive subscription. Just SIM subscription costs.

BTW the NCB table is the same for a Rolls or Kia.

Cool

Insurance is a mine field.
Try to keep the miles to a minimum, add another driver for some reason it seems to reduce the premium.
Can you garage it over night? Use it for social only if it's a second car and being a second car will reduce it as you will be driving the other car more?
Protected no claims is a waste of time, read the small print as I believe the premium will go up anyway if you claim. 60% off 100 or 60% off 200 new premium!
Pop onto Martin Lewis moneysavingexpert or even send an email to him.
I pay less than 200 but there is a 350 excess, it is locked in a brick garage, only 4000 miles pa and not my every day car. Also I am 58 and the area I live for some reason does not attract high motor insurance.
I use Quotemehappy
Good luck

Cheers Russ

Pete has four cars insured through Admiral multicar. The C class, the 230 and the 32 are all 300, and our little Seat is 100, so 1000 in total for four cars. That's all fully comp, no mileage limits, including commuting. Parking on the street too, and 250 excess.

He is old, but young lads at work are paying more for one crappy little car then he's paying for all four!

Just to confirm what others have already stated: Location/age/NCB and where vehicle is kept (Garage etc) will affect prices...

As for me I have been with 'Privilege' for the last 3 years, and every time I have quoted what Go Compare etc have quoted, they have always beat the price for me including: Excess and add-on's. Unfortunately this year they couldn't beat: "Grove & Dean" who classed my car as a 'classic car'. I have saved over 100 and reduced my access by 350, so I am very pleased.

There's no point in putting my premium as there are so many variables (As mentioned above) that will affect each individuals quotation. Suggestion: Call them all and get the best one can....

With my son at 19YO, i ended up buying and insuring a Ford fiesta for him. After laughing hysterically at my friend at work, whose sons insurance two years earlier, for the first year was 3,000 ! I ended up doing the same thing !!! And that was the CHEAPEST !! The first on-line quotes ranged from 5,000 (cheapest) to 15,000 !!!!! . I recently insured a "agreed value" insurance for the 55 as reading the previous years insurance "small print" it appeared that they would only give the "base model with no options" value paid, out if it was written off, which was a lot less than any reasonable amount close to what i paid a year earlier. I went with Adrian Flux, and the agreed value premium was an extra 65.

Little tip - if you keep the car in a garage, try getting a quote for it parked on the drive. For some reason it is usually CHEAPER! I guess it could be something to do with stuff in your garage falling on it or whatever but still, surely a car is safer in a locked garage? But no, my premium is cheaper with it on the drive.

My SLK 280 costs just under 200 with LV. Wife and I have our "daily use" cars with LV too. Excess is 700, mileage is about 2,000 p.a. and car is garaged. The excess is a bit strong and I may look to change it. I could also have more miles (say 4,000) for very little extra cost, but I don't need it. LV will let you go to fire and theft cover only if you keep it in a garage for the winter which makes it even cheaper. I might also go for an agreed valuation as the car has exceptionally low mileage and must be about the best SLK 280 manual in the UK!

200 to insure a relatively powerful sports car driven by an old fogey like me seems pretty cheap. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than the road tax!

So with my renewal imminent, I found this old thread and thought I'd give Grove and Dean a call.

Making a long story short, they didn't consider my car a 'classic' - and quoted over 1300, for 8k miles.....

My premium is 335 per annum. I am 64 and my policy is:

- Comprehensive
- 9 years No claims discount
-Social Domestic and Pleasure and Travel between Business Place.
- Drivers Insured me plus Spouse.
- Protected No Claims Discount.
- Legal Protection.
- Voluntary Excess 0
- Guaranteed Hire Car Plus.
- Annual mileage 6,000

Granted that my car has no performance mods to affect the premium. The car is garaged. Finally my insurer is Directline

It can be a cheap quote or an expensive quote its when you claim you find out how crappy they are or good as such ........

Thats then you think your getting good value for money after all them years paying them hundreds or thousands of pounds over a period .
