Mercedes-AMG Old v New 2015 SLK55 v 2017 SLC43

To upgrade, or not to upgrade? That is the question.

When a new model of the car you own is released, it’s only natural to look at what has changed to see if the update is worth the time, effort, and most importantly, cost.

Major generational updates sometimes make the decision quite easy to rationalise, but when the changes are concentrated on just a couple of components, is the argument weighty enough?

Interesting comparison there. I for one will be keeping my 55 for the foreseeable future.

Nope, missing important body design cue toward rear of rocker panels (flares). Skimped out on the rocker panels, over emphasized the front clip, added two fake rear louvers, a mere 60 extra horsepower over SLK 350, multiple function mouse type interface, new shifter, oh and switchable exhaust. IMO, the cosmetic makeovers on the body since the R171 have been increasingly downplaying the awesome, sexy body lines. I would rather go and buy a used 55, gonna be hard to come by after a while and will be increasingly rare and valuable.

Update?

I am a stodgy old fart. When significant styling changes take place, it often takes years before I even begin to appreciate them. I appreciate the family relationship that most MB automobiles share. I love the R171 styling. It is unique and yet clearly a Mercedes. The F1 look snout is similar only to the McLaren SLR supercar. That is not bad company. The old 3 valve engine does not put out as much peak power as the newer 4 valve units do, but its torque peak begins sooner and is very meaty and it still sings up to redline, making it very capable on a real backroad without having to rev the nutz off of it in the process. While those good qualities do not show up on the spec sheet or the 0-60 or 1/4mi times, they present well to the pilot in the cockpit (me) and I like the car too much to dream of letting go at this time. My old car also was one of the last years to include the 6 pot Brembos on the front brakes. While I will pay more for a brake job, that does not happen often and if I was worried about that, I should have purchased a Toyota...

There are newer cars that I like and would want but another SLK is not likely my next AMG. The SL65 twin turbo does catch my eye. I have always been a fan of that V12 and I saw a newer one recently on a trip to New England was smitten. But, not sufficiently to trade up. Perhaps, in a few years. I drove an earlier SL (2003) last year in Texas and can appreciate its slightly roomier cabin with more storage behind the seats and in the trunk. It makes it a better GT than the more Spartan SLK. Ma Lady and I can and do travel in the SLK but it takes strict luggage discipline to do so. An SL500 is nice but a step down in performance. Bumping up to the AMG version would be a viable compromise. SL55 or 65

If I had a complaint about my 55, it would be lack of interior space to stuff stuff (as Irish says regarding appreciating the roomier cabin). For example, when I load up the 6 cd player (plus extras that can't be loaded), where do I keep the jewell cases? Got 2 in the flap-behind-the-seats, 1 in the glove box and the rest, well here there and everywhere. I suppose they could go in a box in the trunk but still inconvenient.

Definitely not a complaint, just an observation.

Pic above

In the pic posted above, I was leading a Porsche 911 cab, a C7 Vette and a Porsche Boxster Spyder thru the iconic Deals Gap Dragon in TN. You will note that none of those cars were in the photo following me, (they were too far behind). I was not going that fast but the SLK does the backroad hustle really well. We were in sport auto mode and it seems to just know which gear to be in that way. It hangs well with many other so called "More Powerful" cars. i.e. Camero SS, Mustang GT, C6 Vette, yada, yada...

AMG uses the plus sized horses
