Question Engine Overheat Help - R171

Hey all,
Few days ago i had coolant indicator pop up, thought was antifreeze low added more, nothing happens then in few more days red light saying stop engine shows up. temp shows about 120C.

I started observing temps and looks like when im driving temps are ok ~80C, but if i get stuck in traffic it goes up and up and up

So my guess its either thermostat or fan. My normal guess would be thermostat which is normal to replace at least once in lifetime of the car (i got about 70k miles) however when i did fan actuation 50 and 100% spin about same speed visually. and fan makes some notice that does not sound correct to me. I found some broken plastic on fan so it was out of balance so i can possibly say there may be something wrong with fan too.

Any thoughts on this?
How can i test fan efficiency and thermostat?

Another question is that when i looked up fan cost its like $800 way toooooo much for that part. C63 i bought for $70
So does any one know cross reference parts for fan? Based on photos looks like other V8 like CLK500 has same fan but it cost $150-200 which is more reasonable.

The M272 thermostat is known to give odd performance when it fails... Does the fan not turn when the A/C is on?

for some reason did not get reply notification
fan turns on when AC on, i also can do fan actuation. It does makes noise that i would day not healthy but that only noticeable when i actuate it when engine is off, when engine running car is loud to kill all noises around (no secondary cataleptics)

I guess i try new thermostat at least its easier part to replace and should be chep. Although my question about fans compatibility is active, caz i think i need to replace it too one way or another,.... just not planing to pay 800 for a part that should be 100

Thermostat is your best bet, I doubt the fan affects temp that much sitting still if it is still working. Noise probably due to broke blade, doubt motor bad at all. I would flush system thoroughly, add all new coolant when you replace thermostat, and check for any leaks at operating temp afterwards. If problem still persists, then I would look at replacing fan. The fan assembly is $600 on partsgeek.com, there is a universal one that supposedly fits for $100 on Ebay and Amazon but I would stick to original. Surely just remove and replace motor w/cross referenced one or even salvaged.

ehhh forum did not like me and killed my reply

anyway here we go again....
I ordered thermostat $105 from German aftermarket, will see if it works
as to fan, blades are fine but outer rim has missing plastic so possibly that affects baring , if there are universal fans i can probably try that. i don't think fan is something that we need to care about original or not

Dude, you are driving a Mercedes SLK55 AMG (Brabus package I assume) that most of us wish we had. Keep it real, original, and take good good care of it and your investment will remain sound. Parts ain't cheap for sure, but if you start throwing cheap universal stuff on there you just asking for more problems down the road. Make no mistake of skimping out on the coolant system for sure. Fan assembly is $478, thermostat $94 on mercedespartscenter.com https://mercedespartscenter.com/part...OLING%20SYSTEM

I would suggest that you check the temperature sensor that turns the fan on/off.
You don't need the fan running when you are moving obviously. But your description of events sounds to me like the fan is not starting when the temperature rises.

genuinemercedesparts.com shows cross-references, i.e. "this part also fits" information, and it does not include C63.

Good luck sourcing a replacement! Can you post pictures of the broken bits?
