More R171 SLK55 questions (some UK specific)

Ok I've decided to start a new thread on this as I feel that some of the Q's may benefit other potential SLK55 noobs (like me) rather than be lost in an existing thread...

The main Q is that of price. It strikes me that the values are all over the place if you take the below ad (now sold!) the car looks to be in great condition with just about everything done (if the pads have been done could one assume that the disks were still good?) under 50,000 miles and coming in at under £15k

https://www.slkworld.com/slk-cars-sal...-%A314750.html

yet looking at what's out there at the moment the starting price seems to be near as dammit £16k with the majority on at a fair amount more (lovely blue on in Newcastle is nearly £18k!)

Used Mercedes-benz Slk Convertible 5.4 Slk55 Amg 7g-tronic 2dr in Houghton-le-spring, Tyne & Wear | Snippersgate

what is the perceived wisdom here? Go private and get a decent warranty? Go dealer and get yourself covered? I suspect that these are now too old for MB main-dealers to be interested in selling?

More generic Q's would be:

would the R172 steering wheel be able to be used (with working radio controls)?
WRT to the above what about the R172 wheel and an aftermarket unit (Pioneer/Alpine)?

What about different alloys/tyres?

I'm sure I'll come up with more questions over the next few days...

Cool

Set yourself a budget and look for a car that fits it.
I here Snippersgate are good and will refund your travel costs, check T&C.
You will pay around 10-20% more at a dealer.
If you are looking for a 55 in a colour other than Black or Silver you will be limited but if you see one you need to be quick.
Is low mileage important. Check Service History, there may be advisory items that have not been Done. Some people put cheap tyres on, they may look good but won't last.
CD player is not too important now days with digital music and takes a lot of room in a small glove box. Check the Head unit CD/DVD works. In fact check everything works and test drive with the Roof up and down. Discs are expensive, you should be able to see a long groove almost the width of the disk, if it is very short the disks are nearly dead.
As the saying goes if it looks right......
You can check old MOT's on line before you go and look.
Check inside the door shuts as the seat belts can get trapped and damage the paint etc.
Bolsters can be very worn due to the shape and tightish entrance, but can be fixed with a bit of care.
Check centre armrest works if pre 07. It works in several directions.
Don't forget it is a top of the range car (£50000 +)
Take your time and view a couple that you don't want before you buy.

When I was searching for blue I noticed they disappeared within days, but were often marked 'sold' on the websites within 48 hours, if that.
3 that I chased went within 6 hours of going on the web.
So, I second Russ's comment wrt colours go quick.

As for price?
It's worth what they can get you to pay.
Seasons raise and lower prices a bit (more at some than other dealers).

I forget the exact date but the road tax went from beggar all to £500 plus for the exact same car around September 55 plate I think.
The lower road tax draws a premium over similar age but higher tax cars.
You can see 05 and 55 go for more than an 06 with similar specs etc.

The gasket that Jeff mentions in your other thread actually blew on mine during the test drive.
The guy had to change his clothing!
Reading up here first meant the ball then landed back with me
It's a simple and cheap (relatively) fix.

You need to go and try pre and post facelift R171 and the R172 and narrow down the model first.
Trying to look up all the mods will just keep producing lists.
Besides, the 171 has more possibilities because it has been out of warranty longer. 172's are starting to catch up.
And someone has to be first at trying mods.

Drive them and then I think you'll have a better idea of the questions you need clearing up.

Good comments made by the guys.

Be careful a lower priced one is genuinely good value, ie some maintenance or corrections aren't required.

Discs have been mentioned, fronts done at a dealer can set you back £2,000. Although guys on here have sourced cheaper alternatives.

There is a great checklist thread on here to remind you what to look for when buying a SLK.

Re warranties, previous discussions on here have shown some guys are happier paying the @£1,000 for a years mercedes warranty and having piece of mind, where as others put the same money aside as a repair fund. I do the latter.

I've had my September 2007 SLK55 for over 3 years now, had 34,000 miles on it when I bought it. The front discs and pads were replaced when purchased. Other than all expected regular service items, I too have had the engine seals done, only @£150. Last year I needed new prop shafts couplings (@51,000). That's it for me.

Why not save yourself the money, hassle, have a bigger choice and buy a Mercedes 350slk with the AMG body kit.

Admitted its half a second slower to 60 and does not have that phenomenal V8 soundtrack.

But it's half the price.

I am very happy with my 350slk, but to be honest if money where no object,I would buy the 55SLK.

TBH that blue one he's got is just that being said if it was just a 10% mark-up I'd be fine with it 20% and I'd feel you're starting to extract the urine a little... this one was (reputedly!) acquired by him at 13,500 . All that being said though I'm not in a rush at the moment, just doing my research and enjoying my wife's 172 (diesel )

TBH if it were only about the looks then I'd be all over a kitted 350 since I know that the 3.5 provides more than enough performance excitement for most normal people. The problem for me would be the lack of a bent 8 soundtrack (true the insane performance of the AMG is also a pull )

Plenty of great advice and comments offered so far, and youll find the used car checklist that's been mentioned here: https://www.slkworld.com/general-disc...checklist.html

The cheaper road tax cut-off point that Myk ( @Avel Du ) referred to is towards the end of March 2006, so it's cheaper to tax an 05/55 reg SLK 55 than it is a later version of the same car. I really like the facelift enhancements myself, but the facelift SLK 55 was out of my budget when I was shopping for one. I think the road tax for my 55 reg was £295 when I last renewed it.

Once we have some more SLK meets booked, why not come along to one because there are usually at least a couple of SLK 55's at each meet... it never hurts to look at a few examples before you commit your hard-earned cash for one. I maintain a list of the planned meets here and will most likely soon be proposing a weekend breakfast meet sometime later in January.

I just realised that not much has been said on your question about swapping wheels/tyres...

Yes, that's possible, although you do need to make sure that any replacement wheels are capable of accommodating the large brakes. I have no experience of how to verify/check this, but @Col has done this to the R171 SLK 55 that he had, and he's moved those same aftermarket wheels onto the R172 SLK 55 that he's now swapped to.

Perhaps he'll be along shortly to offer some advice on what to check when considering this...

Cool

The Road tax difference is around £220 per year (£18 pm) that is 4 tanks of fuel.
I never let this get in my way as I wanted the best car I could get.
I purchased mine privately and spent around 2 hours looking at it.
I used a traffic light check list.
The Car will not be perfect as it is second hand but as long as you know what is wrong you can make a decision.

Unfortunately if you want a 55 at a sensible price you'll need to buy privately and I understand that's not something for everyone! 12-13k will get you an early one buying privately but history is important and rarer colour combos will attract higher prices.

In my opinion the dealers both MB and independent take the piss with asking prices. I actually found it very challenging to sell my 55 last year despite the fact it had very good history and specification. That said it held it's value well in the 2 years I owned it!

I had to lower my asking price several times to attract a buyer and ended up letting it go for a bit less than I wanted or expected.

Wheels wise if you looking for the same size and width it's a straightforward case of finding like for like although I doubt you'll find exactly the same offsets as used on the OEM wheels. In case you aren't aware the 55 has a staggered wheel setup with 7.5" width wheels at the front and 8.5" at the back. It's not unheard of to find used cars with incorrectly sized tyres on them.

If you are looking go larger diameter and wider as I did I'd recommend using a calculator like the one at Online Wheel and Tyre Fitment Calculator. Offset, Tyre Stretch and Speedo Error | Will They Fit for example.

As Dave says you need to be mindful of brake clearance particularly for the fronts if you end up buying a car with the large brake calipers. In addition changing to aftermarket wheels will most likely necessitate changing the wheel bolts and locks as they will most likely be tapered seat rather than the OEM ball seat.

Good luck with your search.

@well I thought I'd have a giggle and see what Parker's Used Car Guide and various other 'used car experts' have R171 SLK55 values at.... hmmmm let's just say that I suspect that most people looking would be overjoyed to see one that cheap!!
