Very low mileage, but she wants oil???

Last night I drove the AMG to Tulsa (less than 200 miles round trip) for a concert, and on the drive home late last night, the screen said "Add 1.5 quarts of oil at next gas refueling." This car only has 2800 miles on it. This concerns me as I have no idea if this is a normal request or if it is a sign of impending doom. Would you suggest I have it looked at, or just dump some oil in her?

No worries - over at the AMG Private Lounge, they said this is normal. Carry on, my panic is over.

It normal for now but you're not out of the wood yet. It very normal for any high performane engine to burn oil during break-in period. After about 1000 miles, you should not need to add any oil under normal driving at all between oil changes service. So keep your fingers cross.

...so are they saying it's normal consumption for running in the engine?

I picked up my AMG in Aug 2012. I was very easy on the car during the breakin and even after that I didn't really 'push' it too much. I checked the oil level frequently and never saw the level drop up until I changed it last month @ 6500 miles (I was going to a track event and wanted fresh oil). I thought the two-day track event might cause it to burn a bit, but after all that driving (probably 1.5 hours total track time that weekend), it still hasn't needed a drop of oil added. I was a bit surprised because in that kind of driving, it's either gas to the floor or brake to the floor - very little 'coasting'. So, I guess it depends on the engine, but there appears to be a wide range of oil usage for these cars. If I'd have seen the oild consumption you are seeing, I would probably have been concerned, too.

Here are the three responses I received over at that forum:

“During the first 10k miles on my C63 I had to add 1/2 to 1 qt several times. Since then I have had to add much less. There are other threads here with this topic and it seems quite normal for these cars. Also, the sensor is quite sensitive about the warnings- probably a good thing! Enjoy your beast- it's the one I'm considering next!”

“Just put some oil in, it is normal. I've had this happen with my C63 and my new CLS63. I have about the same number of miles on my CLS as you and had to top off with 2 quarts so far.”

“The E63 needed a bit over a quart at 2,300 miles.”

...is the car sitting level when these alerts come up... is it always on or does it come and go?

The alert comes on after about 3 or 4 minutes of driving - Oklahoma is very flat, so there are no hills or slopes when it triggers. It remains on until I push the button for the trip screen. The alert is in white letters, rather than the "FREAK OUT NOW!!!" red lettering.

I just received an official reply ...
"As you break in an AMG engine, the expectation is that it will use a quart or so of oil before the first service...this is entirely normal as the rings and cylinder surfaces are hard as hell so it takes a while for them to wear/hone into each other and so some gets digested in the process..

This was my response at the PL. MB Buckhead sells a lot of AMGs (they are a performance Center) and they confirmed this is normal for these engines.
