Spoke to MB Canada today

After reading some different threads, I was interested in a few things about Schwarzie. So I called MB Canada to get some info.

1)the SLK55 does not require a radio code if the battery is disconnected. He said it will re-boot and go through it's various routines but no code is needed. I neglected to ask him at what point the code requirement was discontinued.

2)when using my Battery Tender (I'm not going to get a Ctek at this point because my BT can handle two cars and as I only use it in the winter, I don't need the "quickness" that it provides vs the BT). The issue I had was I had read about Benz's having two batteries (primary and secondary) and I wondered whether the BT would charge both . He told me the SLK (all versions) do not have a secondary battery. The SL's do but not the SLK's. So no worries there.

FYI.

@LeonardoDaBenz Thanks for posting the replies you got.

I emailed MBUK about getting the code and got asked a host of questions but no indication if it was needed.

Wondered about the double battery issue with winter coming.

radio codes were for the r170
no r171 since 2004 required a radio code

I believe the Battery Tender is fine with the R171 that has single car battery.
It may not be "smart" enough to do an adequate charging for the R172's that may have ECO feature and auxiliary batteries.
(MB Canada may not be knowledgeable about the R172 and just gave a "blanket" statement that all SLK's do not have an auxiliary battery). Members with R172 may be able to tell you where this aux. battery is located. (IIRC it is behind one of the seats near rear bulkhead)

It is not about "quickness" but about "smarts"

With BatteryTender, if the sequence of LEDs does not show a constant green, one does not know if the auxiliary battery is adequately charged. (My experience with the 2015 GLK was that the Battery Tender got overly hot during the process with the green LED flashing even after 24 hours to the point that I thought there was something wrong with its internal electronic circuitry).

You're right Eddy about the aux battery. After more searching I found this:

https://www.slkworld.com/slk-r172-gen...t-problem.html

Starts around post 8. Just need to reverse the location for N.A. cars.

EDIT-->well, I really tried to find the aux batt in Schawrzie today. No luck. My "bulkhead" doesn't look anything like in that link. The carpeting doesn't want to lift up. THere is no webbing there, only a "leather" pouch on the bulkhead that really does not want to let go.

Further Mr Google provides no indication that there is an aux batt in R172. I've even gone so far as to read all 344+ pages of that manual with no indication there is. Maybe it's assumed that it will NEVER need replacing. Doubt that as things ALWAYS need replacing.

I just dunno.

I'll wait till I take her in for her "pre hibernation for the winter" servicing whether there is one or not.

This is not to denigrate your response Eddy. I just cannot find any evidence of it's existence.

Just got me more curious now.

Do you have the net webbing to store the first-aid kit right behind the driver seat on the rear bulkhead? (left hand side of vehicle in North American models)

Perhaps move the driver seat forward and check. If not then check passenger side seat.

Nope. Just that pouch. The first aid kit is in the trunk under that little "box" that lifts up (either provides a flat trunk deck OR you can reverse it to provide a deeper well. Where the spare would go if there was a spare (just the inflator "kit").

I moved both seats forward. Although it's a real real tight fit, there is just that pouch. There is no net (like in the previous post/quote) anywhere, just that pouch.

Here's a pic. I tried to get different angles but it's such a tight fit, it's really just all "grey". This is behnd the passenger (right) side. You can see the corner of the pouch upper right.

Does your vehicle have the ECO feature?
Does the lower part of the rear bulkhead of the driver side look the same as passenger side (I know you stated you moved BOTH seats)? No nets to store even an Owner's Manual?

Just double checking.

Perhaps use a strong light source. Sometimes it is hard to see when the carpet-like lining is dark grey or black. Look and also feel your way at the rear bulkhead on the driver side (North American models), you may be able to feel the edge(s) of the panel and covers the aux. battery.

I can feel there is an "edge" right at the bottom and tried to gently pulll it up. Didn't want to pull too hard in case I wasn't supposed to pull up hard.

I'll be a bit more agressive this time. But as you know, even with the seat fully forward/tipped, there isn't a lot of room to move around.

Got photo (perhaps taken at the car floor level)?
Are there attachment points to where perhaps a storage net with its metal support may have been?

I will check an R172 next time I am at the showroom in MB.

SUCCESS (sort of)

I had found the first aid kit in the trunk but apparently it was not the MB issued one. Per the previous instructions, I moved driver seat forward and lo and behold, there was the net with the MB kit :-)

This is with the kit removed and the net disengaged.

Then tried to lift the backing away from the bulkhead. Left side (towards pass side) lifted away pretty easily. The right side is really tucked behind the fixed part of the bulk head.

Hey, I see something. It's a white plastic shield bolted to what looks like a metal plate. But that's all I can see. Tried pulling up that flap all the way but it was really stiff. AND I couldn't see if there was a battery there.

I have to assume there is (but I was not about to start undoing bolts to remove the two plates. What a horror show if one (me!) has to ever remove that setup to get access to that battery.

Thanks to all who responded. At least I know now it's there (although I don't really want to get involved with it. Barely enough room to take a pic let alone start removing stuff.

Question Update

Well, now I am confused.

I spoke to MB Canada and they told me:

1)no radio code was needed if the battery was disconnected and
2)there is no secondary battery in the 55.

I subsequently discovered the hidey hole where the secondary battery IS (in all likelihood).

At the same time, I had sent an email to MB Germany asking the same questions. They in turn forwarded it back to MB Canada (Toronto) and THEY replied the exact opposite:

Quote:

Email I sent to MBGermany:

Message:

1)If I disconnect the battery on my 2012 SLK 55, do I need a radio code to "revive" it? 2) If I use a "Battery Tender" (tm) battery tender, to maintain the primary battery, does this unit also re-charge the secondary battery? Thank you.

And the reply I just received from MBCanada (Toronto):

Quote:
]
Your email sent to Germany was forwarded to our department for reply.

The remove of the vehicle battery will affect the function of the radio therefore you will be prompted to enter the radio code. The code can be found on a wallet size card located with the manual package in the glove compartment of the vehicle. If the card is no longer available, please contact your local Mercedes-Benz service department for assistance.

The secondary battery is not used for the starting procedure, therefore it is not required to be charged when the vehicle is in the static mode, and it is not for any time function with key off. It is used for certain functions while in the driving mode, and is charged while the engine is running. This battery has been designed to meet the standards of long idle times.

Regards,

XXX
So folks, which is it?

Spoke to Canada after getting that email and well, I got a bit more info (and I hope it's s finally right):

1)ALL 2006's and newer require a code if the battery is pulled.
2) SOME 2003's (but not all) require a code if the battery is pulled.
3) All 2002's and older do NOT require a code.

I guess what it comes down to is either:

a)put a charger on the posts prior to removing the battery or
b) drive to the dealer and get the code (and keep it handy for future ref).

After all that, YMMV.

this is wrong!

1)ALL 2006's and newer require a code if the battery is pulled.

i pulled the battery on my 2005 and 2009 numerous times and no code required ever

code required ended with r170 in 2004.

I'm done
