New tires, brake pads, and lighter rotors on the way!

My pads are right around 3-4mm and front rotors are getting close to replacement thickness so I went to my dealership for a quote for the brake job (front rotors and pads all around.)

My SA quoted me $890 for front rotors and pads, both sides. I thought this was way too low, so I had him double check with the parts department when he told me he based the quote on a CLS63 brake job. The parts guy nearly had a heart attack when he saw the correct prices.

P30 SLK55 Front Rotor alone: $1032 (EACH)

I thanked him for checking and went home. No way I'm paying that.

So, I emailed EvoSport (http://www.evosport.com) and asked them about their lightweight brake rotors for SLK55s with P30 brakes. They said the brakes were already designed but still need to be produced. They told me it would be a few weeks until they are available, so I pre-ordered a set.

EvoSport rotors: $2450 for all 4, $1450 for just the front or rear pair

These rotors are about 8lbs lighter per corner and a direct replacement.

I also ordered Porterfield R4S brake pads to go with the new rotors.

While I was doing maintenance, I decided to check my tires. The rears were just below 4mm and fronts right around 5mm. I decided to pre-order a set of Dunlop Direzza Z2s (Z1 Star Spec replacement) from TireRack. Approximate availability is Mid-March.

I've always been happy with the Z1s, both on the street and autocross. The Z2s look like a big improvement in terms of grip and feel.

TireRack review comparing the Z1 and Z2: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...y.jsp?ttid=168

Take a look at the difference in tread pattern

If anyone is interested in their rotors for SLK55s without the P30 package, I think they might have them in stock. Email them and ask.

It's a no-brainer to me to upgrade to these lighter rotors rather than paying nearly twice as much for OEM rotors.

How long have the original brake disks lasted on the car, I'm hoping not to have to replace them in the 3 years I'll own the car, I'll do about 48k miles in that period, but more of them will be motorway miles.

My car is at 41k miles. I've also autocrossed it once a month since I bought it last year. Not much motorway driving here in Hawaii though so I'd assume I use my brakes a lot more.

The fronts are needing replacement soon, I'm guessing within 3-5,000 miles. The rears are still good for another 10k+.

My service advisor says AMG has mostly done away with these expensive brakes though. He was shocked to see how much they were for my car. A CLS63's brake disks are cheaper for both, with pads, than one disk for my SLK55.

You got to look at the whole picture. If you buy all 4 EVO rotors then it would be more expensive then 4 030 OEM rotors. The 030 OEM rotors from parts.com is only around $635 ea. for front and around $150 for rear. Totals for fronts and rears is only $1570 for parts.

Klinh, thanks for this post. My car needs new rear rotors and pads. Looked on parts.com but the rotor prices are ridiculously cheap they make me real suspicious. Am I reading the site wrongly? I saw rotors for my 05 SLK 55 at $94.80??????? Shocking, really...

it depends on the which rotors you have. with the slk55 there are a few that came with 2 piece front rotors. the cheapes i found them was around 695 ea. i replaced my front rotors around 67,000 miles with these front rotors. I did not want the cross drilled so i got the slotted with holes drilled inside of the slots.

30k miles ago, the front pads and rotors were replaced for $1895 (parts + labor). Now the rears need replacement... Quote from dealer was same as fronts... $1895. Trying to see if I can source the parts cheaper and give to my mechanic to install... Should be lots cheaper than 2 grand for just rears, I am guessing...

Alternatively, can I switch all 4 to the smaller brake setup on the 07 and newer models?

you can switch but it will cost you alot, because you would need to replace all four calipers. if u got the big brakes then u have 6 plots in the front and 4 in the rear so u would need to switch to 4 plot in front and 2 rear. the advantage would be cheaper for rotors and pads and availability.

Always e-mail the seller with your VIN # to get the right part numbers. If your car does not have the 030 Performance Package, then your OEM front rotor around $490 ea. and rear rotor around $150 @ parts.com.

It started on 08" models not 07". You can easily find 08"-09" owners with 4/2 pot setup that would love to trade for your 6/4 pot setup.

Thanks Klinh. I'll email them my vin and confirm the price and if its an OEM part. If its really that cheap, I'll stick to OEM parts.

I'm 100% sure. Here are the part number based on my car VIN# with 030 Performance Package option. Parts.com quoted me as follow.......

I work in the parts department at the Mercedes-Benz dealership that fills the Parts.com orders for the MB line of vehicles. Below is a list of the part numbers and quantities you will need:

Front:

0054203920 - (qty.1) Pads $180.00
1715400617 - (qty.1) Pad wear sensor $15.00
2094210112 - (qty.2) Rotors $630.00 each

Rear:

Pads 0054204120 $121.20
Rotors 1714230212(2) 153.60

I can't give you a quote on S&H because it's calculated by the Parts.com website based on the shipping method you choose.

Regards,
Steve

You're welcome and you can click on the "thanks" icon under my post. I'm not really sure what it does but it there....We all learns from one another here. I'm just passing on the infos that I learned from others here. Btw, since you're from San Diego, I know a mechanic that do side work on the weekend at home and can install the rotors for really cheap. He was willing to charges me only $120 to installed 4 rotors.

Thank you very much for this post. That is indeed the right part number! I already ordered Porterfield R4s pads so I guess I'll just order the rotors and wear sensors.

The sensors come in packs of 4 I'm guessing?

Also, any idea why the rear brakes are so much cheaper than the fronts? What is in our front brakes that makes them so much more expensive?

EDIT: I just checked parts.com with the front rotor part number, the price is $559.20!

I can install the rotors and pads myself and save even more!
