SLK55 front brake rotor mileage pre 2008

I've searched all over and it looks like people are replacing their front rotors any where from 40k to 80k miles. I'm just wondering what is the lowest mileage anyone has where they had to replace the rotor?

thanks

Hi Imducati

I think im right its all to do with the wear on the rotor ie minimum thickness not sure what the thickness is , i have my old ones in the garage i will take a measurement .

Cheers

When I bought the car in 2010 it had 30k on the clock. To make the deal, I had the dealership do several maintenance items including Trans Service, Spark Plugs, and Rotors/Pads all around.

Not sure if the brakes needed maintenance, but I wanted to get as much done as part of the deal so I didn't have to later.....

You would need to replace the rotor if more than 2mm of wear has occurred. How fast you get there depends upon how hard you brake and if you are using non-OEM brake pads ( like for racing). You would likely need to go through a couple sets of pads before you would need to replace the rotors ( they don't need to be replaced together).

I think that for normal around town driving a set of pads will last 30-40K and the rotors probably at least twice that...

Bought my 2005 slk55 that had 43,000 miles. The last service by the previous owner at 41,000 he had the pads and rotors replaced on the front. And I'm ready to go and look at them myself as they squeal awfully bad with only 2,000 miles on them.

Not so fast!

It is very normal for the brakes to squeal on your model year....when MBZ changed the caliper setup in 2008 (may have been in 2007 late build) to the smaller 4 pot, it was to solve the squeal problem. Those with the smaller calipers would kill for the larger ones and accept the squeal!

Mine squeal but only when it's hot outside and I've been a little aggressive. I did notice that after about 5k they were not as bad.

Hmmmm......then why Mercedes still offered it as "Performance packages" on the Slk55 and the same rotors and calipers offered as standard on the Clk63...etc?

MBZ offers performance packages to make more money! That's the brutal honest reason. People who want more performance will pay for it...whether the brakes squeal or not. I took my car in after three weeks of ownership and complained about the brakes and was promptly told that the pad compound and the rotor material is conducive to great braking while making a tremendous amount of dust and squealing...so you live with it. I had an F355 and the brakes squeal, even my MINI which has an aftermarket brake kit squeals. My friends S63 squeals....and so on.

Stopping is more important...but MBZ wants to make money....and that's OK with me!

I don't have these issue on my Slk55 and I personally never heard of these issues on any of my friend AMG cars. Those with these issues, could it be due to non oem parts? I due have these issues on my Clk430 and Slk230 is because I used non oem dustless pads.

I suppose it's possible...but I'm still running the OEM setup....when it's time for a brake service I will go to an EBC Redstuff pad. If I need rotors, then ill probably go with a Brembo setup....but with only 12k on the clock since the brakes were done, I could be waiting a long time! Come to think about it, my PS2s were put on the same week and they still look new! So much for getting new wheels!

Merry Christmas!

To add...

When I bought my '05 last year, I also had the dealer/seller replace the front pads and rotors... That was 30K miles ago. Now I hear the squeal quite often. I just had the brakes checked this past week and its still got more miles to go.

To Jeff, is it true that one can replace just pads on these AMGs? My dealer quoted a full replacement (pads & rotors) when I told him my brakes squeal... $1895 front, $1895 rear... I guess it could be worse, eh?

About $200 to replace the front pads DIY.
The fronts will wear out about twice as fast as the rears.....

If they squeal and you appear to have a lot of pad left, then you might try re-bedding the pads to make the squeal go away. Do 6-10 fast hard stops from ~ 60 mph back to back to heat up the rotors and the pads. this will often clean off the surface and eliminate noise.
