When was Bluetooth Connectivity Introduced on the R171

Simple question really...

Or alternatively what options to owners have to sync their phones (iphones) to the car.

Thanks in advance.

I have a 2004 R171 with COMAND. My phone can see my car by BT and vice versa, BUT, that is as far as it goes It cannot pair with it or do anything remotely useful. I fail to see the point of BT on early R171s??????

In my 09' BT syncs just fine with my 4s iphone. Chatting on the phone top down is a challenge but has been done :-)

I retrofitted an OEM Bluetooth system into my '06, and like Woolly says it is a pretty dated system. Great for 2004 when it was designed, but just think of how much has changed since then.

Gene's View of R171 SLK BT History - May or may not be actually true, but I believe it to be so.

The original system was designed to only work with a few phones, and they would plug into a specific cradle that plugged into the puck in the center console. This way the car took control of the phone, charged it up, and allowed it to use the car's antenna and additional signal/broadcasting power. Great for 2004, but as you can guess there was a limited market for cradles, and everyone wanted to choose their phone based on features and not what car they drove.

Enter Bluetooth. M-B solved the problem by making a Bluetooth puck that plugged into the Center Console puck instead of the cradle, and it paired with any BT phone. You lost the use of the car's antenna, but gained the ability to use whatever phone you wanted. However, still no music streaming (wouldn't become popular for several years) and the features were rudimentary at best - will pair with up to 4 phones, but not at the same time, and only remembers the last one it has paired with.

So you are starting to see why most people who have a pre-facelift R171 without BT have a hard time justifying spending $650 to get the OEM System in order to gain ten year old technology. I'm a little slow, and so I went the OEM Route. The post facelift headunits have a better system with BT inside the Headunit itself. Not sure if it streams music or not - but I don't think so.

If I had to do it over again I'd probably retrofit a post facelift headunit or go completely aftermarket. There are Parrot module like JonB uses, and probably a few others. Most will run you several hundred $, and I'm not sure that anything save an aftermarket headunit will give you music streaming via BT.

Anyway - whatever you decide to do let us know - and take pictures !

Hi Gene, you're missing my point - slightly. I have telephone pre-wiring on mine. I plug a specific phone into a specific adaptor in the centre console and it does exactfully what you say.

I plug a BT puck in place instead of the phone adaptor and again,it does what you say.

Both of these are 'hard wired' from the phone/BT puck to the head unit.

BUT . . . . even without phone pre wiring, BT puck, or nuffink!!, you can 'see' the HU by BT from another phone, you just can not pair/connect/interrogate/use it. I cannot see what BT on the early COMAND systems does???

Woolly,
Sorry for the way my post was constructed - was addressing it to the OP and not in response to yours at all.

The way yours works is weird, though. Any chance it has to do with the Teleaid system? Do they even have that in the UK? I know that mine had a Teleaid controller box in the rear assembly that had GPS, microphone, and some manner of voice communication enabled, as they can call you up and talk to you via that system. I added an MHI module and the center console cradle & bluetooth puck in order to get things to "work", but there were jumpers in the back for the antenna and MOST connections. I have the A20, though, and maybe there really is a kind of BT setup even in the pre-facelift COMAND.

I can't say I ever tried to pair or "see" the system before then, though. It does drive me crazy sometimes, though, as when I unlock the car it automatically pairs up with my phone, and if I happen to go back into the house and get a call it ends up in the car and not on my handset.

EDIT:
Come to think of it my Datacard says LOW COST USA TELEAID. Maybe in the UK/ROW they had one with higher functionality including BT. Possible?

Hi Gene, no, we don't have anything like Teleaid in the UK. The only thing I can think of is that it was built in to COMAND to communicate with a MB accessory that was never developed fully/released - pure speculation on my part.

Woolly
I had a similar weird experience with my 05 SLK350 and BT .
It would "see" phones but not connect or do anything else.
We had to get a "modern" BT connector unit to plug into the UHI in the centre console.
I bought the Viseeo MB4 and it works great for phone calls.
No streaming music that i can enable.
From my search and understanding MB were ahead of things by putting provision in for BT etc but left the requirement for adding an adaptor for different phones and future upgrades.
Allowed them to sell or add-on features for extra cost too !!!

I'm confused- so does a '05+ SLK have bluetooth connectivity?

I'm seeing differing statements on this thread...

I went through this with my 05 last night also. It -HAS- bluetooth connectivity inbuilt to the point that it will detect and pair with a device. However, it appears to have zero functionality beyond pairing.... unless you have the optional extra bluetooth puck or aftermarket equivalent.

And by zero functionality, I mean ZERO. It cannot access the phone, make a call, nothing.

Thanks for the clarification. Do you know what year has full functionality?

Also, dumb question, but what is the Bluetooth puck? Can this be retrofitted into a 05-06?

Disclaimer first.. all this is to the best of my knowledge so I could be wrong. Im still trying to solve it also.

I believe the later models, perhaps facelift 09 onward got a boost in this area?

The bluetooth puck is essentially a dummy phone that fits into the original MB phone cradle in the centre console (if you received the factory telephone option from new). Originally, you would put a special MB nokia 6000 series phone into the cradle and it would operate as the car phone.

Now, you place a phone shaped puck in place of the phone to connect to a bluetooth enabled phone.

Here is one which I think is most common

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VISEEO-Me...ht_5922wt_1397

You can also get genuine MB ones.. my car had one and I have the manual for it, but not the actual device. From what I read, the MB ones are outdated and not very good.
